Cycling is a very dark sport when it comes to doping.. Crazy what cyclists and their teams used to do in order to win

"used" ? You dont know anything about cycling do you!?
@dc8890

It's funny how people say "LOL 'USED TO DO', OBVIOUSLY THEY'RE STILL DOING IT HURR DURR" as well as "HURR DURR EVERY SPORT IS OBVIOUSLY DOING IT TOO HURR DURR" even though these people have presented zero evidence whatsoever to support their claims. Weird, isn't it? Not saying it doesn't happen, there's probably the odd athlete or two using drugs, but in the interviews I've seen and read with people connected with cycling, they always say it's much better now than it was. So unless I see evidence that support the idea that a rider has doped then I'm not going to jump to a conclusion and I think it's pretty dense to do so. Yes we should be aware of what has been reported as still happening in the peloton, like micro-doping, and dosing at night because they can't be tested between 11pm and 6am or something. But I've seen nothing tying this to any rider in particular. It could be the winning guys, or it could be the guys near the back who otherwise can't keep up, who knows.

I think it goes to show you that the rules aren't just there to prevent cheating but also to protect the athletes. Blood transfusions in my opinion are not on the same level as taking PEDs but the risks are real.

bad bag of his own expired blood is not nearly so scary as the time when the doc messed up and gave him someone else's blood!

They're receiving type specific, packed RBC's, so it's not an issue. I work in blood banking and hematology. Whole blood can be an issue because it contains all blood components, including anti-bodies (Ab) antigens (Ag) and white blood cells. Still, as long as it's typed as compatible to the rider, it will be fine. In blood banking and hospitals, Oneg blood is known as emergency release blood because it can be universally transfused. My guess would be the riders are actually receiving type specific blood, or, here's the best way: autologous RBC's. Autologous blood is your own blood. What blood dopers do is pull their blood at different intervals months before the event, they preserve the blood, and let their blood cells compensate, and then rinse and repeat. Now, your own blood, autologous, is available during competition.

Blood transfusions are not dangerous. Back in the 80s Franceso Moser did it when he was preparing the hour record. At the time that practice was not banned. What makes this practice dangerous is the prohibition imposed by the authorities.

Its still probably a lot cleaner and safer than the bodybuilding community who abuse steroids. I still dont know exactly what doping is though. Are they just adding air to their blood or some chemical drug?

I don't believe it is regular blood. I think they are concentrating the red blood cells with a centrifuge. Otherwise I don't see how the hematocrit would go up. More blood wouldnt mean higher crit unless your crit was low as fuck to begin with.

They often train at altitude for 3 weeks or so before a race to raise their natural rbc. Then they take a few bags of blood out, keep in the fridge and re-insert the day of the race. Presto. And nigh impossible to detect.

The hematocrit goes up because during the long stage races it gradually falls over 2000km or more, and they want to replenish it back to where it was before the Tour de France. It doesn’t need to be modified blood but just their state before the stage race.

It's an autologous blood transfusion, i.e. his own blood being infused. He ran no risk of contracting HIV, unless his bag was mixed up with a positive cyclist.
