Karl Ellwein of “Ellwein Engines” invited me out to check out his Dyno session. He had a beautiful 383ci LT4 set up ready to make some pulls. Sit back relax and listen to what over 480 HP sounds like on the engine dyno.
Be sure to check out Ellwein Engines. He has quite the catalog of builds under his belt. www.ellweinengi...

Nice build and dyno! Very close spwc wise to what I am building myself. Which is an 11:1 383 out of a Vortec truck engine. Assault racing 205cc head castings ported by Lloyd Elliot. A 215/224 @ .050" custom grind Comp cam with 1.7 rockers for 0.578" lift. Running a marine dual plane MPFI intake and Thorley Tri-Y headers. Feel it should make close to 500 hp and a little over 500 ft/lbs. Running it with a later model 24x PCM and EFI connection reluctor. All stuffed into my 1997 G3500 Express van backed to a 4L80E and 10.5" 14-bolt.

@@jrod264winmag yes .578 is a healthy lift number. But for a lt1 383 that cam has very small duration. Its all subjective but generally ppl like at least a 230/236 duration cam with a 383 lt1. And thats considered a mild street cam.

@@jrod264winmag lol trust me i know this ! Your mentioned 218/228 duration cam is comparable to the classic hotcam for lt1s. Which is perfectly streetable for a 350ci lt1 with stock heads. This guy has a 383 with big flowing heads. Im very seasoned with the lt1 platform. But sure throw a 215/224 cam in a big headed 383 if you want all low-mid range power. My LE 215/224 .533 lift cam peaks around 5800 rpm on my stock headed 350 lt1. Builds torque as low as 1200 rpm. So i would consider it tiny for a 383. And im actually in the process of getting a splayed 4 bolt fully forged 383 build with 195cc afr heads and will be going with a 230/234 .580 lift cam and even this cam will peak under 6000 rpm and will be mild in my 383. Good street cam. I hate over cammed cars, no low end torque !

I have a 93 C4 with a built 383, AFR 195 heads, Comp Cams 224/230 lt1 grind, 24x reluctor set up with coil on plug + Holley ECU, forged h beam rods, forged Wiseco pistons, 1.6 rollers, zero decked, 11.2-1 pump gas, 425whp @ 6k, 434 wftlb @ 4k with at least 365 from 2K to 6K. That is over 500 crank hp but it was an expensive build. The throttle response is immediate. It is ultimately going to be a dedicated track car...right now it is just street and autoX whenever that starts back up. This summer I'm going for another tune (running a bit rich now) and will run it up to 6500.

@@justingray3236 Sorry I missed your question. I'm very close to having my engine start up on a homemade engine stand. I have to send my Torqhead ecu out to get a base tune. Howell wiring harness should be here this week. Also gonna order and test a new Aeromotive stealth 2 fuel tank (93-97 Camaro style) for the fuel source for the engine stand. Also need -AN hoses since my stock fuel rails have been converted to connect AN fittings. Also need a new adjustable fuel pressure regulator. For my Camaro my stage 3 T56 is in. My 12 bolt rear and full BMR suspension is in. Just need a clutch. Other than those items and the every day nuts, bolts, and hoses, I'll be ready soon this year. Probably end of summer I'll be dyno ready...

That small cam not doing it any justice, he could just about reach those numbers with a h/c package with a stock bore. A Le2 or custom grind cam would easily gain it another 40-60 hp. Maybe he got the small cam for emissions I'm guessing, still a good pull though💪💪💪
