This how we built a freestanding screened in pergola that is basically an addition to our house without actually attaching to the house!
Huge thank you to Onduline North America us.onduline.com/en/diy for supplying the Ondura Premium Panels and the Ondura Tuftex panels for this amazing pergola build and for their continued support of the @DIYTyler Channel. You can find all about their products using the links below and check them out at your local Lowes store.
Ondura Premium Panels: us.onduline.com/en/diy/produc...
Tuftex Polycarbonate Panels: us.onduline.com/en/diy/produc...
This fully covered pergola is amazing! It sits on top of our composite deck and cantilevers over the roof of the house so we were able to add a screened in 3 seasons room to our house without actually cutting into the roof and framing into the house. Some may ask how we will replace the roof when the time comes and that's a great questions! I don't really know but we just had this roof replaced so we will cross that bridge when the time comes if we are even here anymore!

Yes agreed the sheer strength of screws is not what people they are, for example for joist hangers that's why you use specific nails because of there sheer strength, but what do I know

Love that you had your son involved and showed how to do things safely! This is creating amazing memories. My husband got to do the same thing with his grandpa as a kid. When we were dating and we visited his grandparents' house, he pointed out the gazebo in the backyard and excitedly told me he helped his grandpa build it. Your son is going to do that one day!

I love the way you keep the project moving forward with little adjustments here and there. That’s how I do it and your end result looks fantastic. This is a wonderful build I bet your wife loves it . When I was young my Dad was building beams for our ceiling he cut a board and the end dropped off and landed on our chuwawas paw and broke it. It was so sad she screamed and cried for an hour the vet took care of it but I never forgot that. I can see how you love your pets so please be careful. I also think it’s great how you get your son involved you can be proud.

I'm not a fan of the beams not being notched into the posts. All of the roof load relies on those headlock screws and NOT the posts. That's also quite a span for 2x6.

I am a construction engineer. I would not of built it that way, but it has survived 80 mile/hr winds, so I guess you are the expert here. Great job and I can see why your wife married you--you are the man.
@breese524
@breese524 Жыл бұрын
I'm not an engineer, just another diy'er and would not build it this way... The entire roof depends on two 2x6 rafters and the screws holding them to the posts. A better way would be to run 2 2x6 boards over the posts to create a beam. Then, run the rafters over top of the beams. That would spread the load over more of the structure and not depend solely on the screws that connect two of the rafters to the posts. Like you said it survived 80 mph winds. I'm not sure how often it can handle that though. Also, snow load with winds? Again, I'm just a diy'er. The general idea is good but, the implementation would not work where I live.

I’ve been wanting to make this since I bought my house, but I couldn’t wrap my head around how to attach it to the roof. Your method is so simple and makes a ton of sense. How does it do in rain? It looks like the rain might sprinkle a bit under the pergola.
