Fun video Tyler. The reason flowing water over a can is faster than just placing it in Ice is because the flow of a liquid (or gas) over an object increases the speed of heat transfer. Like how wind chill works.

@@danielhova7826 Exactly. And with chilling a soda can, like that, it's a twofold effect. Water transfers heat faster, and the greater the difference in the temperature, the faster the heat transfer happens. So rotation keeps the drink mixed, and at it's overall warmest, instead of having it get really cold on the outside, and gradually getting warmer towards the middle. This expedites the heat transfer as well. Also, adding salt to the water will make it chill faster, since salt lowers the freezing temperature of water, and makes it colder. Thus creating a greater temperature differential.

The Cooper cooler was invented at my alma mater: the Cooper Union (NYC) the trick is you need that cold reservoir so that the water temp out of the faucet is always 32 deg, and by spinning the can it’s always cooling down hot drink, so it’s different than spinning it in ice water, as the water touching the can will warm up making the heat transfer slower.

You could try putting water in the steel cups to speed up the transfer of heat. I'm guessing it'd make a pretty noticeable difference compared to just the bottom rim of the can touching the cup.

Wrapping in a wet towel/paper towel and popping in the freezer for 10-20 minutes works really well too. You can get that "Frosty" ice crystal texture to the liquid (if you know, you know) in about 20-25.

The concept of salt added to ice to make it colder is a long known effect. Homemade ice cream makers used ice and rock salt to freeze the ingredients quickly. (Yes, I'm that old 🤣)

Well, actually that's how ice cream was made in XV century Italy. Salt was used to force ice to melt (that's what salt does, it forces ice to melt absorbing immense amount of heat quickly) and freeze the ice cream in result of energy absorption

The reason salt water is supposed to work better is because it maximizes surface contact with the can, and salt water can be a good bit below water's freezing point. Should try salt water and ice in the Cooper Cooler.

@@ssss224455 The results definitely showed that both salt and sugar can lower water's freezing point, and suggested that salt lowers the freezing point more than sugar does. While pure water froze at 4.7℃, the salt and water mixtures froze at the temperatures 1℃, 0℃

So for the Cooper Cooler. Basically, cold is just the absence of heat. So if you just sit a warm can into ice water, it will be warming the water touch the can and that's it. Because the water is absorbing the heat. If you spin the can like you did by hand, it will mix up the water so the cold water not touching the can will mix with the warming up water touching it. And for the Cooper Cooler, its constantly pouring ice cold water over it and rotating it so its cooling the whole can equally. So the colder the water, the more heat it absorbs from the warm can. Which is why when your hands are super cold, and put them under room temp water, it feels extremely hot.

I love wetting paper towel and wrapping it around the bottle. I also would have loved to see how orange soda 3 hours in the fridge was temperature wise vs the 3 hours in the can coolers.

The salt/ice/water is what I use, you were very close. I put as much ice as I can and just enough water to make the ice “loose” then *about* as much salt as you did. Put the can in right after you put the salt on. Then I use a large plastic spoon and stir the can in the ice/salt/water continuously for 3 minutes. I rinse can under sink to get rid of the salt taste. And it’s around 40 degrees or less (in 3 minutes). What the salt does is rapidly melts the ice then allows the ice water to go below the 32 degree freezing (as you said science stuff)

actually the salt lowers the melting point of water. So it doesn't rapidly melt the ice but because of the addition of salt it actually creates a bond where there's less hydrogen bonds so the water has to work overtime essentially to melt. Meaning the energy it has to lose to melt just got higher, aka it has to go below freezing to disperse the energy to go from a solid to a liquid.

salt on the ice is def a thing we do down here in the south at every get together, the salt super chills the ice maybe you remember the ice/salt challenge where people were getting freeze burns on their skin from putting salt on your skin and then putting ice and alot of pressure on it

Without spending extra coin on a Cooper cooler, just use the bottom half of a Gatorade or powerade bottle and attach it to a drill. The can should slide into the lower half of the bottle. The drill will spin in an ice water bath

I think the biggest advantage of the Cooper Cooler is the fact that it spins the can, effectively churning the fluid inside, meaning you don't get an outside cold layer, and the inside is still warm.

I work for a water restoration company. We deal with a lot of various building materials, doing demolition of wet structures. We use shop vacs to help clean up the terrible mess that inevitably gets made. I've noticed a trend. The main name brand shop vacs are SUPER expensive and often times fail after a few uses, whereas cheaper branded shop vacs seem to out last big brands like DeWalt. I think it'd be a cool video idea to see you use big name brand shop vacs and cheaper shop vacs, and just... suck a bunch of stuff up. Torture test the hell out them. Just a suggestion.

Really good way to make a can of soda cold quickly, is to just sit it on top of some ice, laying on it's side, and roll the can. 2-3 minutes, (rolling the can the whole time) and it's really cold.

Depends on how in a hurry you are (like if you weren't the only one drinking the previously warm beverages) - but a damp paper towel wrapped around a can or bottle and just a few minutes in the fridge/freezer works very well. Doesn't measure up to the convection created by spinning, but you can do more than 1 at a time (and save $100).

The cooper cooler cools using science. It cools the containers via conduction and convection. It also spins the container to increase the surface area. If a can is standing still the outter shell and liquids touching the shell will cool but by spinning it, it evenly cools down all the contents inside the container.

The Cooper Cooler is literally perfect for like college students that live in a dorm type situation, I know about it, I've still got something like it even now a few years after living in a dorm. It was actually a blessing to have during my college years. Where you're sharing fridge and freezer space with 2 sometimes 3 other people, but nobody's using the pantry area so you can stack a few cases of soda in there and have an ice cold drink in just a minute or two without eating up the rather precious fridge space because soda cans are kinda chunky and roomies will complain about it if you put more than like 4 in there at a time. I would've considered a mini-fridge but with the way my room was set up, I didn't have a lot of places to put it.

I can explain why the spinning helps. Talked about this principle in my physics class. An object that is at different temperature than the room it is in will come to be at the same temperature as the room, obviously. But if you put a fan on that object and have air constantly moving over it, it will change faster. With the example of a transition from an object being warm in cold environment, this would be wind chill. With air being stationary, the object will heat up the air around it, and a little bit air movement will occur because of the temperature change but not bunch (unless the temperature change is a lot), those air molecules will then disperse that heat and spread it to other air molecules allowing them to cool the object further (change in temperature in a fluid, which is anything that takes the shape of it's container, is called convection by the way). With a wind chill, the object is constantly hit with air that is the temperature of the room. Rather than having a kind of shell of warm air. And with the spinning, you're doing something similar by keeping the object moving.

For anyone who wants to know, the spinning is like stirring a pot, or moving air over a heating element, you transfer heat over a medium (air or some kind of liquid) you end up "sharing" the heat with more and more surface area, till there's not enough heat (energy) to go around, and you get a lower temerature as that energy is disbursed

The trick with the Cooper cooler is that as it is coming the outside, the spinning action is agitating it enough to spred the cooled outer layer of drink to the inside and cycles it that way

I've seen a large barrel size version of the spinning cooler available for customer use in the grocery store wine section. It works very well.

You should test some dry ice into isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) the alcohol doesn't freeze and the dry ice brings the temperature down to near liquid nitrogen temperatures. You would have a lot of fun with some super chilled fluids. Just be careful and make sure you are wearing appropriate PPE.

Liquid nitrogen has a temperature of -196C (-320F) and dry ice up to -78C (-109F). That's still quite a vast difference in temperature, it's the difference between ice and boiling water ;)

@@WoLpH Thanks for the info. I was unaware that there was that large of a difference in temperatures. For someone like me, I assume that it is easier to obtain dry ice than it is liquid nitrogen. Although I've never really looked into purchasing it. Playing with super chilled liquid is fun, and I thought Tyler might enjoy it as well.

@@TheOGJudar I agree, I'm just hoping he would do it safely. The 9V battery series had me cringing, that was insanely dangerous. With regards to the freezing I think the dry ice will work better, the main cooling limitation here is conductivity and liquid nitrogen will just result in the leidenfrost effect and ice insulating everything.

The spinning give the temperature change some oscilating, so the heat would dissipate more evenly and therefore faster, your method of using ice and salt os actually the old school way of how we used to make ice cream, we put the ice cream mixture in a metal tank chamber surrounded with salty ice, and then just spin the thing

I live in Tx. During the summer to keep the ice chest super cold I put ice 1/4 of the cooler water and rock salt used for making Ice cream mix it load it with drinks then I leave a 5gallon bucket of ice water next to the cooler. You just pull your soda/beer dip it in the bucket to remove the salt and your good to go

Salt and water on a paper towel, wrap can, place in freezer. Spinning can mixes the fluid inside instead of the fluid outside of the can just getting cold. The moving water on the outside also increases the heat transfer coefficient.

If you're still wondering how the cooper cooler did so good I can give you a few reasons. The heat capacity and therefore heat transfer speed of air (let alone static air) is much lower than water or even flowing water. On top of that if you remember how the freezer one and the cooler cups were colder closer to the cooling elements, or in the case of the freezer the outside, that's because water needs to be moving to move heat properly, and when you have it moving around like that you mix the still warm soda with the colder soda you make the temperature of the fluid contacting the cooling warmer which by the laws of thermo-dynamics allows the heat to transfer quicker as the laws of thermodynamics states the transfer speed of heat increases with the delta (difference between).

I wrap the can or bottle in paper towel, wet it, squeeze it out a bit and pop it in the freezer. Works a charm!

The primary factor in the Cooper Cooler is the water flow. When you put the can in still water, the water next to the can will heat up. That makes the heat transfer less efficient. If you keep the water flowing, then you keep cold water next to the can. Spinning has some effect on that because you are stirring the water. Adding salt, or pretty much anything else that dissolves in water lowers the freezing point of the water. The chemical term for that is freezing point depression. The ice is already up to 10 degrees lower than 32 F, but the water in contact with the ice is always at the exact freezing point (32F). When salt is added to the water, the liquid phase temperature can be several degrees colder than 32 F, which increases the cooling effect. The same effect is used in ice cream makers.

The aluminum of the can is already super temperature conductive. The spinning of the can is key to get all the liquid inside to contact the aluminum surface to make the cooling energy exchange much faster.

9:17 what i will say to this is that if you have a warm oject sitting in like a cold liquid the liquid thats imediatly around it will warm up, thats why switching it out makes cooling more efficient, this is veeeeeeeeeeeery good to know if you ever fall into water and you are super far away from land and its cold you need to try and lay still and be in a fetal position so that the water around your body doesnt flow away and get replaced by cold water

The spinning is constantly changing what fluid is in contact with the cold surface of the can. It's cooling all together instead of outside in. Liquid is an insulator and insulation works both ways. The can is warm the fluid will hold heat and gradually cool the outside because the inner column of fluid is resisting the temp change

The reason the super cooler spins the way it does is what good is it to shake up a can of carbonated beverage then try to open it? So it spins it just enough to keep fresh water contacting the can, and to mix the beverage inside. It's not a scooby doo mystery. The salt is not required for the super cooler and it is not required for the same technique. Salt lowers the freezing point whch is why it has an advantage over ice, but in this case, it wouldn't make any difference.

The reason that one cooler pumped water over the can spun it is so that the effect of the can warming the air and/or water is mitigated. For every bit the cold air/water cools the drink, the drink warms the medium, slowing the cooling process.

Used to use a metal deep meatloaf pan and freeze blocks of ice to spin cans back when I did demolition work, the block would last all day! Used a cheap dremmel with a stone grinder bit wrapped with a rubber band for traction. set the can sideways, spin by hand a sec or 2 to get a "groove" then use the dremmel! doesn't take long with some RPMs and it gets cold quick! not to mention soda-safe too! (wont explode, never shakes up) The salt-water trick works a bit faster because it prevents the water from freezing and allows it to drop below 32 degrees. I never timed it but i wouldn't say longer than 2 minutes would be considered "ice cold" all the way thru. Co-workers laughed until they realized how cold my drinks were :) Pretty soon everyone was asking me to spin theirs!

there is an adapter that squeeze fits to the top of a can with a drill bit adapter so you can use a drill to spin the can in ice for as long as you wish and it cools the beverage quickly. Saw it on "this old house" years ago.

The salt trick does work very well BUT you have to ..... add much more salt and hold on to the can and 'stir' the ice water mix with the can for 30+ seconds. I've gotten soda from room temp to slushy doing it that way.

I like to wet a couple paper towels and wrap them around the can or bottle, then put them in the freezer. Works pretty good.

One method I use regularly is putting it in the freezer but you wrap a wet paper towel around the can/bottle. In about 5 minutes you'll get a cold drink.

The salt, water & ice is better for cooling a larger amount quicker. While the Cooper cooler does it fast, it's only one can at a time. That may take longer than just placing an entire 6 or 12 pack in a cooler with the mixture

I absolutely loved how well my Cooper cooler worked. Literally physics and thermodynamics at play and FAST. The only problem is that this thing is made entirely too cheaply. The internal components are not well insulated from the water, the motor isn't high quality, and I've had two fail so far on me after about 8 months of reliable use...I'd rather they cost an extra $100 and be made properly.

if you put the can in ice, a small layer of air will form around the can and shield it from cooling down. The same happens when you just pour the water over it. But when you spin the can and bottle its constantly cooling down

The cooper goulter actually works in it something you can do at home by yourself just by spinning the soda around an icy cold water and if you want to make it super cold add salt to the water and ice

They sell a drill attachmenta for the cans to use with the salt water. It does wonders for about 2 minutes. Also fyi, salt lowers the freezing point of water, hence the whole solution can go under 0*C and have a greater cooling effect.

as the can rotates, the outer layer is exposed to the ice water and then spins into the middle and the liquid in the middle is spinning on outward in a cycle because of centrifugal force kinda. so it's constantly cycling out like a radiator, eventually all the liquid inside has been ran through the ice water at high speed, so in 60 seconds, all of the soda has had it's warmth dissolved and the ice cold temp has made it's way in. it's why sitting still didn't work but the spinning motion did. you can even put a 2L in a sink full of ice water or a cooler, etc and spin it really fast for a minute or two and you'll start to see the same thing.

I once saw the white ones on aliexpress and the seller suggests adding water to the metal cups before using, my guess is that it would cool faster bc of how much surface is in contact between the plate and the can

Another poster correctly mentioned that red wine is served close to room temperature, however 47 degrees f is just about right for white wine. We had one of the Cooper coolers, but it was just too noisy.

I’m no master in thermodynamics but the whole spinning thing moves the pop around causing it to cool faster, heat moves to cold so when it sits still it only cools the outside layer inside the can but as it’s spinning the warmer pop moves to the side of the can sucking more heat out of the fluid and it cools it more efficiently

You should lie the can and rotate it with the fingers just as the Cooper Cooler did (as if your fingers were running on top of a barrel). That's the way you make icecream, put condensed milk inside a can and rotate it in ice with salt for a couple of minutes. A Japanese program did something like that but with a huge barrel and throwing it from the top of a snowy mountain.

While camping and hunting we always spun the can/bottle for a bit in the ice water in the cooler if we didn’t want to wait. Don’t know why it works but been doing it for years.

The liquor store on the nice side of town has a huge version of this that’s like 4 feet tall you put stuff in it while you shop or wait to check out. The first time i saw it i stuck my arm in it to try to stop the water from moving

From my limited knowledge, so take it with a grain of salt, the Cooper Cooler works by both spinning the drink to more evenly distribute the ice water across it's surface, but also the waterfall causes the water to pull more of the drink's thermal energy away from it quicker, which is why it's so quick. That would also explain the diminishing returns on the "Extra" setting because the drink's thermal energy is closer in line with the ice water. It isn't as effective in the second minute because it's can't pull more any thermal energy away from the drink can than the water itself has.
