A type A evaluation of an uncertainty component involves making repeated measurements and calculating a standard deviation from those measurements as an estimate of that uncertainty component. It can only be used for uncertainty components you can see as variation from one measurement to the next. A type B evaluation of an uncertainty component is "anything other than calculating a standard deviation from repeated measurements", for example using tolerance limits given in a specification or a calibration certificate and converting that to an equivalent standard deviation by assuming a distribution within those limits. That distribution could, for example, be normal, rectangular, triangular or U-shaped, depending on the nature of the uncertainty component. In the example I assume a normal distribution, but for a tolerance for a piece of measuring equipment, you would typically assume a normal distribution. That is equivalent to saying that you know that the deviation of the equipment is within the tolerance limits, but it is equally likely to be anywhere within those tolerance limits.
