One of the coolest (!) things about the Neo is the fact it generates almost no heat! None a soft, pink human can notice, perhaps deep inside, one or two of the components may make a few degrees, but compare this to ANY laptop, and it is essentially cold. No overheated palms, or scorched thighs, for the lap-typers amongst us. Also. No noise! None! No fan, nothing whizzing about, nada. Very restful.

My 6th grade writing teacher was really cool and supportive of me. I wasn't the best 6th grade student, but I enjoyed her class and when she gave me this typewriter it helped me focus when I couldn't (or wouldnt) write manually.

If it works well, you got yourself a bargain. 🐧’s maxim that if you spend $4 for an hour of entertainment, you’re getting good value for money, means you would only have to use it a couple of times for a couple of hours, and you have won hands down. I use mine all the time, for business letter drafts, letters to friends, taking notes, and even making data copies of Russian language articles (it doesn’t have a Russian font but when I down load into my computer I change “D” into “Д” and “F” into “Ф” etc). It’s a great little machine and if some thief snatched it off a café table, all they would get is my first draft chapter of : Angry Penguins From Mars. And not all my personal details from my I-pad. Anyway, I hope this machine works for you.

Just got mine, $39.95 via Amazon (with Christmas money). Amazing! Batteries already in, clicked On/Off button - and the opening screen came up instantly, and within 3 seconds it was ready to take typing! Plugged it into my computer (Win XP Pro) and it searched for and found the driver. When downloaded, I opened Word, clicked Send, and it quickly typed what I wrote into the Word doc. Way cool!

What a pleasant surprise. Cataract op yesterday. Running with one eye for now. Therefore I’m delving into a device that arrived yesterday: Neo2. Sidebar: Apple shut me out of my iPad and computer. Mentioned previously I’ve lost some brain power so remembering old passwords to open computer in order to get my new iPad working before they shut me out like they did on my last iPad. I can’t get there from here. So the Neo caught my eye because I just want to write. Now back to the Joe Show.

11:01 instead of keeping a table of contents in file No 8, you can as well press "Ctrl + F" to view the first lines of files 1 through 8 plus stored files. Another trick is you can press "Ctrl +N" to get a new blank space, and you will be asked if you want to save the existing work in a given file.

Far cheaper than an iOS device is an Amazon Fire. I've just bought the most recent Amazon Fire, althought an older model would do just as well, and "dumbed it down" by installing the Google Play store, then deleting everything Amazon. It now has: Google Docs, a Dictionary/Thesaurus App, and JotterPad for when I don't even want to log in to Google Docs. I couldn't bring myself to use an iPad for this, but a

I just ordered two, one for each of my kids that homeschool. I should also note that the reason we homeschool is because my kids needed this Assistive Technology at school and they weren't providing. They both have a fine motor disability that makes handwriting painful. I'm really looking forward to this distraction-free word processor for them! I'm delighted to see that they can be enjoyed by people of all ages, with and without disabilities. Nice video, thanks!

How are these working out for your purpose? My sons both have dysgraphia and dyslexia, and the assessment recommends that we shift them to typing to support their writing efforts. I do not want to hand them my laptop to teach them to type with the distracting glory of the internet on it. Have you tried the typing program that comes on the Neo2? I only found out about these devices yesterday, and I've been on a research bender to find out which device is best for this purpose!

Very good info, Joe! You have explained it all so clearly and concise! I use MS Word and a small laptop for my writing (Microsoft Surface with the supplied keyboard.) The keyboard is well laid out but the keys are soft to touch and very sensitive so i am constantly re-writing, backspacing, etc. I find the computer very distracting and annoying at times. Neo would end all that distraction. I usually write 500 to 1500 words a day, more or less and will write much more without all the distractions! Thanks again for your info. I have viewed some of your videos about Neo and typewriters, again, very informative and I thank you for sharing your knowledge, you put a lot of work into these videos! Great job! Great video! I love my Alphasmart Neo2. It's a great device. Thanks for your video. I learned a few new things. By the way, the Hemingwrite is now called the Freewrite. Evidently, the Hemingway estate sued them about the name. So they had to change it. At one time, I was interested in that device, but wisely decided to go with the Neo2. The Freewrite is too expensive and from the few reviews I've seen on KZfaq, it is a little awkward to use. Also, there is no arrow key on it whatsoever. Therefore, a writer can not go back into the text to add something or to make a small correction.

I used an Alphasmart in most of my K-12 years of education and in my opinion, it's very easy to use and it helped me out quite a bit. However, The Writer Plus, which is a similar device developed by Keyboard Instructor is actually more efficient and effective for writing than Alphasmart, at least in my experience. The text is more visible and the keyboard is more tactile and satisfying to use. Thanks for this video though, it gave me a lot of nostalgia for these old devices.

This is a great video about the AlphaSmart. I have a Neo and Neo2 (love the colour of the latter). You've also given me the idea of turning my old XP computer, which I wouldn't trust on the internet (too vulnerable) into a dedicated writing device with only writing software like Word and others compatible with XP. It only has a 40gb hard drive! PS I see this is the third comment I've posted here!

Cool! Yes, Focuswriter is great! How much ram does your XP computer have? I've made my dedicated writing computer with a slimed down version of Windows 7 (only Focuswriter and an mp3-player, no other programs at all, not even paint or solitaire). I've changed the bootlogo, the loginscreen and system messeges. So it is just a digital typewriter. I plan to make videos about my writing computer and my Alphasmarts (when I get them from ebay).

Because the hard drive on my XP laptop is so unreliable, I bought a Thinkpad X200 (not the tablet type) with Windows Pro installed. I got this from ebay for £75 and it's fine. I've installed writing programs via thumb drive; for various reasons it doesn't go on the internet. I think it has 4 GB RAM and a 250 GB hard drive. It doesn't really need much RAM for office type use. If I felt it needed it, I'd add another 4 GB.

There is also the Pomera devise from the company King Jim. The only thing Whit this devices is that they are Japanese devises but you can change the menu and language to English. There very good, I would say even better and portable than the freewrite and the Alphasmart. The only thing that takes a little bit to get use to is the Keyboard cute it's made for Japanese people in mind. But the Price in comparison Whit the freewrite is not that bad. A freewrite usually cost between $500 to $600+ but the Pomera DM 30 wish is the one I recommend you can get it for around $230 (There is also the DM 200 but that one cost $400)and you can do allot more whit it than the freewrite. It has a E-ink paper display to but bigger in a smaller form factor. It also has 8GB of internal storage plus you can save your TXT files to a Micro SD Card up to 32GB in comparison to the Freewrite and it's 4GB of internal storage. You can also transfer your files connecting it to a PC like the Freewrite and the Alphasmart. The only thing is that the DM 30 has no built in Wi-Fi so you can't upload your contend to cloud storage services like the Freewrite but you can transfer your files by QR code to your phone. The DM 200 has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transferring capabilities but not to cloud services. Finally one thing that the Freewrite has going fore itself is the Keyboard it is awesome but it has no arrow keys so you can't edit your work on this devise in comparison to the Pomera devises which keyboards are laptop Chiclet keyboard but there not bad and you can edit your all of work on it like on the Alphasmart. Still the Alphasmart devise are still the cheapest you can get if you are on a budget.

It wouldn't let me clear the files, so I manually went into each one and deleted the text in each file. My memory is back to what it was, Yay. My local college I found out offers the older version of this, so I was looking up to see exactly what it was. I am disappointed in what it looks like. It's nice that it is small, and portable, but the small screen, I think is the no go for me. I am so used to a large computer screen, that looking at a few lines of text at a time, I don't think would be helpful, and then you have to transfer everything to print it. I might give it a shot, as like he mentioned there are no other distractions, it just seems like it is more work to use it. I wanted something to take notes, not sure if this is the device for me. It's possible, I will have to sit down and check it out.

You can't, directly. AlphaSmarts are text editors, not word processors. But, if the intended purpose of the text is, for example, an online HTML document, you can embed HTML code for formatting such as bolding, italics, etc. as you write; which is what I do when writing for my blog.
