This is a video from a Cox Manufacturing promotional film from the 60's. I clipped out the portion that describes how a reed valve engine works so people can see how these wonderful engines run.

I had these as a kid in the 60s . You got really good at taking the fuel tank off to clean grit from the reed valve. If there was even the tiniest speck of grit in there the reed wouldn’t seal and the motor would not run. In the later 70s I flew RC planes and on my smaller planes I used the TD engines which were rotary valve and not as temperamental about dirt.

I always wanted to make an RC P-38 using .049s because they are cheap and can run either left handed or right handed.
