The aircraft is flown manually throughout the display. However, the Typhoon's avionics in this instance, intervened before it was too late. Its even published on the Eurofighter website. In the event of pilot disorientation OR in the event of a potential crash, the aircraft will recover at full military thrust WITHOUT reheat (for safety reasons) and remain in a steady climb until the pilot is able to regain control. So special thanks to modern avionics and an immense thrust to weight ratio.

My boss worked this show in 2005 and we have talked about it in depth, in the pilots enclosure the pilot admitted getting it wrong but also said their wasn’t a lot to be done about it, you can bang out at any altitude (Martin Baker zero zero) but he was worried about his un manned plane flying solo, so he just prayed and it came good, the yanks sat their watching all admitted that if this was anything but a typhoon it would of been night night Venna. Lucky lucky zoom zoom!!

@Morocco Mole Well in order for the camera guy to get that scared I think this time it was more like 25ft or less. The comment said the pilot admitted he got it wrong(meaning he knew he got too low) He didn't eject due to concerns about the trajectory of the unmanned jet (he was concerned that the jet would head towards the crowd and/or buildings)
@nickhirst9993 жыл бұрын
@Morocco Mole Pilot was Squadron Leader Matt Elliot who admitted it was pilot error: From Milavia.net 2005 "The Eurofighter Typhoon practice display on Friday will be the talk of some military aviation enthusiasts for many months. During a practice display, Pilot Matt Elliott of 29 (R) Squadron almost found himself eating pieces of grass after the Typhoon became noticeably low while pulling out of a descent. Thankfully he recovered the beast well, Squadron Leader Matt Elliott later admitted it was pilot error. The Eurofighter was re-calibrated and Matt practiced his seven minute routine later on in the afternoon, this time without a hitch. Allowing the Eurofighter Typhoon display to go ahead as planned on the show days."

@richieh1980 The aircraft FCS (flight control system) has a built in recovery system that will recover the aircraft to straight and level and a 300kt shallow climb if it detects no response to warning callouts. The Seat is a Martin Baker Mk.16A ejection seat. It will never automatically punch out a pilot and does not have the capability to do so. The only automatic ejections are on fighters with 2 seats. If the pilot punches out then the back seater will normally automatically follow.
@12345fowler6 ай бұрын

I think the pilot also miscalculated the required altitude required for the Split-S manuevre he was performing. I believe it's between 6,000ft and 10,000ft needed to pull that move without endangering yourself, and he seemed below 6,000ft to me. Also, what that guy said about thrust management :P

Vapour is G not stall dude, When a wing is generating lift it causes a vortex to form at each wingtip, and sometimes also at the tip of each wing flap. These wingtip vortices persist in the atmosphere long after the aircraft has passed. The reduction in pressure and temperature across each vortex can cause water to condense and make the cores of the wingtip vortices visible. This effect is more common on humid days. It was humid that day

@MrEreda Its a BAE typhoon with a BAE test pilot in as the eurofighter didnt enter service with the RAF until 2008
@abcxyz8203 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. I shall correct you. • This pilot was Squadron Leader Matt Elliott. • Typhoon entered RAF service in 2003 under "Case White". • In 2004, RAF Typhoons deployed to Singapore. Cheers,
@rvfharrier15 жыл бұрын
Bet he's glad he was flying the Typhoon that day instead of, say, the Jaguar. The Typhoon is one of very few aircraft that could have pulled out of that. Best thrust to weight ratio of any plane in service was what saved that guy's life.
@pokes40417 жыл бұрын
Any pilots here, what exactly did he do wrong? Did he simply not pull up quickly enough? Was it his air speed? Man, that was close. Good thing he was in a Typhoon, a lot of other planes might not have been able to pull out of that in time.
@lozzatolli16 жыл бұрын
The amazing thing about planes such as the Typhoon, Gripen, Su33 etc are the plane is able to do so much more if it wasnt for the human inside the cockpit. I belive the Typhoon's structural strength is cappable of exceeding higher + \ - g pressures than any other combat aircraft in the world.
@Chain14516 жыл бұрын
Pretty close! With a delta wing you cant just pull up, because it will stall - ('Stall' being a result of relavent airflow, not speed). I think he did amazingly well to control what could have been a fatal mistake. Any untrained pilot would've just pulled back hard, nosing up but inadvertadly stalling the wing until impact.

There is another video of this at Warton Aerodrome I assuming that was a practice run. Search Near Miss Warton and you'll get it. I think its part of the routine designed to turn heads. Good skills and balls from the pilot. And for all those having the F22 Eurofighter argument please remember they are two different types of planes built for different contracts on different budgets. The F22 is a great and plane and so is the Eurofighter. There are goods and bads for both.

Just one of the countless split s prangs having occured during demos for decades. The lesson are there for a long time what you need is to understand it and practise it.
@pulsejet116 жыл бұрын
No, 'ground effect' is when the wingtip vorticies are destroyed by contact with the groung. The wing then becomes more efficient. It begins to occur at an altitude that of the craft's wingspan. Proggresively better the lower the craft is from there.
@gearfinger17 жыл бұрын
Shamoly! Was it a BAE pilot or RAF?
@ioaircraft16 жыл бұрын
It's sort of an illusion. He already has the lift, but once the ground effect in flight dynamics enter into the equation it's like he's hovering for a half second until it climbs out again.

Hey, Paxhockey, got your reply. As it almost hit the runway, on reheat most likely, as it passes your position I reckon they were off. Take a look on the vid at 1.44, doesn't look like they are on. I'm not doubting that afterburner was used, just that at that point I mention, there is no flame out the arse end. I would love to have been there though to see that. All the displays of the Typhoon I have seen were crap in comparison. No arse twitching/puckering moments. :-)

This is the third time i have seen this happen in display practise and yes i would bet my RAF Pension on it, he's 15ft above the deck and showing the power he has, granted showing of but none the less can be done, has been done, will be done again.

@xbonezds Modern fighter aircraft use what are called zero-zero ejection seats, meaning that they can be used safely even at ground level and with no motion. If he had banged out he would have been fine as long as he didn't bang out into the ground.
@Felonator16 жыл бұрын
I am sure too that the pilot had it in control, But it is said that the only thing that stopped it hitting the ground was the ground effect from the aircraft! That said I still think it was a mistake to let it go that low! But like many people have commented! The UK forces have the BEST pilots in the world! :)

@roshawn1111 No, it's not, but if you are a pilot and you CAN save the plane - why not? All i was pointing out was how well trained he was to know when/when not to bail out - imagine how much training it takes to gain the confidence to do that. Thats all i meant, sorry if you took any offence.
@jonny9612 жыл бұрын
@richieh1980 That's rubbish, it doesn't have an automatic ejection system! No pilot would ever sit in a jet with an automatic ejection system! It has an automatic recovery system when it detects loss of control or no reaction to warnings where the FCS takes over and will aim to go wings level at a gentle climb depending on altitude. This was a mistake and a full investigation took place. He started the manoeuvre too low basically.

Lineswine is correct. And people need to stop saying, "if there was any trouble he would have ejected".
