TYPICAL GERMAN THINGS: Beer heaven at a supermarket for beverages & an icecream parlour in Germany// Hello lovely people, Today we're sharing the things we used to do when we still lived in Germany and that we love doing when we visit our home country. We think they are typical German things and we notice them even more because we don't have that in the UK.
Us Germans love supermarkets for beverages! The selection is huge and while we filmed this we thought this must be heaven for any beer love. It's so much fun!
The other thing we love doing in Germany throughout summer is going to ice cream parlours to enjoy a lovely ice cream. They are usually run by Italians because they make the best ice cream. It's a huge part of our culture now.
Hope you will enjoy this video. Kirsten & Joerg xx

We had a returns bottle system in the UK in the 1960’s before everything came in plastic. Such a shame we lost that and the German system looks so good.

It is the same system in like Germany now. And iy’ts true this beware the nature from the bottles. The one use flexible bottles are going into a deposite system too.. and all bottles are left from tourists into the nature or near by the garbage- are restless collected from homeless people- bcz they get 25 ct deposit for a bottle Im in a french german relationship and was more than150 times in France... they have not a deposite system and its visible in their environment

That was a great video, I loved it. Everything is so beautiful, clean and well organised. My husband loves Germany and tonight we had VW currywurst for dinner! We also had their ketchup, potato dumplings, sauerkraut and a gherkin. We also had the curry sprinkle on the sausage. I bet you think they are rubbish but I think they are the best selling products from VW! I don’t know how authentic the beer we had was but it was Engel and I had light Radler! My husband likes the dunkel beers. We’ve just bought a campervan and Germany is now high on our list of places to visit but next week we’re off to Wales 😁

Here in Canada, a lot of homeless people (of which there are sadly far too many) do exactly this in order to make some money. I think that it is a tragedy and morally wrong that everyone isn't taken care of by the State in general, but there are many who disagree with this point of view.

Thank you for the beautiful visit to St. Wendel. After reading some of the comments I am reminded how different one locality may be from the other. I live in New Jersey in the USA and we have mandatory recycling in our county (Burlington). If you put your recycling in with the trash you can expect a note advising you of the proper protocol. Unfortunately, there is no individual reimbursement but the township you live in saves on the costs of trash pickup and monies go to the local government from the recycling centers further saving us tax dollars. The down side is there is still alot of trash on roads and public areas. Here, we have beverage businesses and some are quite large. They need special licenses to do business that are quite expensive and are usually obtained through a bidding process. Only relatively recently have food stores been approved for selling beer, wine and spirits ( I'm 71 years old). Long before that when we traveled out of our state we encountered many food stores selling alcohol of all kinds especially when we traveled south to Virginia to visit my husband's family.

Here in Germany we also have trash recycling at the homes for packaging, some kind of juice bottles etc. that are not with a deposit, also separate for paper and for organic trash as well as “the rest” (not including really bulky things or electronics etc.)… I believe pick up of the recycling bins is complementary, which encourages proper recycling, and you pay for each time that you have the “rest“ bin picked up. The deposit on individual bottles is for reusable bottles primarily, although now many soda bottles are collected in these machines (placing them individually in the hole to the left of where the receipt came out in the video, that’s also where you put individual bottles with deposit, if you don’t have a box) and are crushed immediately, but all the same kind of plastic I’m guessing, so easier to recycle and reuse the plastic. 🙂

Is party store referring to something like an ABC store in some parts of the US? Where you get only alcohol? These beverage markets in Germany aren’t really like that. Yes you can get lots of different kinds of beer and wines but also every kind of soda you can imagine and flavored waters and still waters and mineral waters and juices… it’s not just somewhere someone goes if they want to get drunk that night… ;-) It’s also buying drinks for the whole family or for the retired couple for the week or whatever. 😊🙂

Hi again from this American in Germany! I am in a different part of the country and we also have these “beverage supermarkets“ although they are not always that big! There’s actually a little one right on my street. And no machine, you Bring your boxes and bottles and the person working there counts it up and can see the money back or takes the amount off of what else you buy. I find the system wonderful although I don’t use it very much! I love our tapwater which in our area is really really good, and I am very happy drinking that most of the time! I’m not a beer drinker particularly and hardly any sodas or anything so it’s a rare thing I’m going to such a market! And we have two places in our smallest town where they make their own ice cream! Not Italians, Germans. And it’s really very good! I think I prefer it to the “Italian ice cream“ cafés, actually! Coming from the States I came with a very different expectation of what ice cream is like and how it is served, and the Italian places were not necessarily to my taste when I visited them in western Germany years ago with a friend! He was thrilled with all the (quite soft?) ice cream with fresh fruit on it etc., and I wanted solid ice cream with peanuts and chocolate sauce! 🤣 And that was hard to find on their menu! 🍨🧐 😄 lol Jörg‘s ice cream sundae looks quite good! Chocolate and cherries looks delicious.

This was so fun to watch. It reminded me of my three visits to Germany, where I (a non-beer drinker) drank more beer than I had in my entire life! I remember drinking beer instead of water. Germany is one of my favorite places to visit and I'll definitely go back again. Thank you for sharing.

It's a happy day when there's a new Kirsten & Jörg video! Not a beer drinker myself, but that store looked like heaven for anyone who is! Thanks to Jörg's recommendation, my husband tried the Rothaus Tannen Zäpfle, and now it's one of his favorite beers! Love shopping with you two 💕🍺🍧😊

What a picturesque little town! The beverage warehouse/store was well stocked it seems, ha! ha! I love to look at labels on various wine bottles as they are often small works of art. It appears that you are both having a good time revisiting some of your previous haunts. XO

What a fascinating video! I love the idea of the "big Box" beverage store. It's so efficient but I think the selection might be a bit overwhelming. The deposit system is great too. Here in Canada, there are 'bottle depots' but they are not mechanized. I love the town tour. The architecture and the cobbled pedestrian streets have so much character! There were hardly any cars - or people. What a lovely shopping experience that would be! So relaxing and unhurried! Nice treats at the ice cream shoppe!

Such historic downtown areas are often vehicle restricted, either just for pedestrians or only for certain kinds of cars or whatever. And since Covid there are I think less people on the streets still…

Beverages from glas bottles taste so much better than from plastic bottles !!! And you don't "drink" the micro plastic parts that are always in every plastic bottle. Greetings from Hamburg, Germany

Thank you for this nice trip, Kirsten and Jörg, exploring some typical German things. We have several beverage super stores here in Connecticut, but the bottle return is not as nicely organized. I used to be able to get Apollinaire water here and I loved their motto: “The Queen of Table Waters.” I wonder what happened to it, you can’t even find it on Amazon now!

I like the deposit system. Years ago, 1950s, the US had bottle deposits. If I remember correctly, around 2 1/2 cents per bottle. Kids would find castoff bottles and take them in for cash and buy candy, swimming pool entrance. 10 to 25 cents bought a lot fun back then. Nostalgia. We had a German brewery in the gold rush days of Idaho. Of course first building in a town of men mining for gold is a saloon with a brewery out back. All the way from Germany by train. Industrious German individual. The Turnverein (sp) Society building was an historical landmark in town for years. It’s a bar now and a favorite of college crowd. Thanks for bring back German heritage memories, Joerg.😊👍🏻
