Tyrese Haliburton. 2023 NBA All-Star. 2021 NBA All-Rookie First Team. Master of the Pinoy Step.
The Pinoy Step is a move intended the throw off the defender’s timing by incorporating a shot fake or lob fake as the offensive player strides to the basket after picking up their dribble.
As you can see in these clips, Haliburton has mastered the art of deception and distorts the defender’s timing so he can get his shot off or generate easy looks for his teammates. Haliburton weaponizes the threat of his passing about as well as anyone in the league.
Despite only playing 56 games this past season, Tyrese finished fourth overall in total assists in 22/23 behind only Trae Young (741 assists in 73 games), Nikola Jokic (678 assists in 69 games), and James Harden (618 assists in 56 games). His ability to keep you guessing about whether he is looking to pass or shoot grants him the ability to make decisions based on how the defense plays him and this past season, that led to a career-best 10.4 assists AND 20.7 points per game on 49.0/40.0/87.1 shooting splits.
Big shouts to Jordan Lawley, Paul Fabritz, and Drew Hanlen.

Zach Lavine also likes to use this move very much. Evin you are my favorite youtuber and this is my first comment. Can you do a midrange mastery for 22-23 Jimmy Butler? Or a fantastic finisher for Mavs Kyrie...

the first two were gather steps, you can actually see the ball still spinning against his hand which means the ball hasnt yet reached a truly gathered state (tyrese is doing this on purpose, delaying the gather to confuse the defender). this is the reason for like 99% of internet basketball fans erroneously calling plays uncalled travels. a professional bball player is basically physically incapable of committing an "off dribble" travel like this, you only ever see it when they get confused / brain fart

@@Falcons15176 What you call a "gather step" used to be called a first step, and you had one more step to finish the play, that's basketball. Those rules were put in place for a reason, to emphasise dribbling skills and footwork. NBA is a circus nowdays.

Well, when my Tyrese passing video comes out, you can track the number of times he throws the lob in situations similar to this and then someone can go through more film where the defender doesn't bite and we can all compare notes after

You can see in the video it is around 50% because in the second half of it, you can really tell he didn't fake anyone but just had a clear path to the basket. This is beautiful and smart, but it only works 1) in NBA 2) if you have a great athletic center in your possession. Imagine Murray doing this with Jokic, lol. Or you doing it in a pick-up game. You need a really great jumper to bite, because once he goes up, hang time is so long you can do a lot. In European basketball, even if they bite, they could recover from it because no one is going to jump to intercept a pass 4 m from the basket. Once again, if you are playing with Deandre Jordan, probably many defenders would try to jump and block your pass, because they know if that pass goes through, there is 0 chance they can do anything because Deandre is slamming it.

Even if the defender doesn't jump on the fake, it kinda froze them and make it harder for them to contest the shot afterwards.

its easy to defend if you anticipate it.. its just your reflexes that you jump when someone raised the ball when driving.
