The Lockheed U-2S "Spy Plane"! Dating to the early 1950's and still in active service with the USAF in 2017. We see two example's departing RAF Fairford in true dramatic style.. These things climb like rockets. I zoomed right in on the pre-flight checks by the chase cars, please watch carefully as the wingtip wheels trop of on rotate! The chase car is used to guide the pilot. The U-2 is hard to fly and the pilot wears a "Space Suit" limiting his field of view. The chase car assists the U-2s pilot untill he is airbourne essentially another pair of eyes. On landing the plane lads normally untill it slows, where special skids are in place on the wing tips to protect them. The ground crew then insert the taxi wheels that detach on take off back into their slots and the U-2 is stable to taxi around once more. The chase car is used on landing, talking the pilot down trough the final 50ft or so of final to touch down.

The present U-2 aircraft is more than thirty per cent larger than the 1950s models, and was developed and built in the late 1980s as the TR-1. After several years of operation, the fleet was re-designated the U-2, and specifically currently the U-2S after the replacement of the jet engines with more reliable, and longer range engines. In 1988 I had the opportunity to help land the U-2/TR-1 at RAF Alconbury at the end of a long mission collecting sensor data from a variety of imagery and other sensors (no film anymore) for a very large ground station in Germany. My Mission Planning system also was used to upload the flight controls and sensor controls for the 10+ hour sortie - The pilot I was riding shotgun with had never driven the Mustang SSP that had just been put in service that day, and spun out as we began the chase to help talk the pland down the final few feet. After a sprint at about 130mph, we caught up with the jet and talked him down to six inches at which time the pilot had to stall the U-2 to get it on the ground. The wing tips have titanium skids to all ow then to settle to the ground without damage, at which time the ground crew arrives with the pogos to reattach for taxiing. This night the pilot decided to show off and managed to bicycle the jet all the way to the hangar without a wingtip touching down. The canopy opened and out came the Stars and Stripes newspaper and a pocket book, as the flight controls were all handled by the uploaded module prior to takeoff. One of the 19 Mustang SSPs purchased by the Air Force for use around the world has been restored and is the property of the Mustang Museum of America outside Birmingham. And yes it is Air Force Blue

With the new GE engines, glass cockpit upgrades, and many new and improved sensors these larger 1980s U-2S planes have little in common with the 1950s U-2C models, nearly all of which are hanging in museums around the country. Still requires the same skill in takeoff and landing though! The Dragon Lady name has been earned.

Interesting to see. I live in a small city in Northern California. Our very lightly used airport was built as a bomber training base in WWII and has a long runway. It is used fairly regularly by U2 pilots to practice take-off and landing - usually just "Touch and go" style. Remarkably loud in a place where we are not used to jet aircraft.

Tarasdad for all intent and purposes the U2s uses an F16 engine with a long straight exhaust pipe.
@Zuloff
@Zuloff 4 жыл бұрын
@@matthewhartup941 Yep, the U-2S uses a modified GE F118. Lop the afterburner off an F110 fighter engine and you have essentially the F118 as in the B-2. The modify the F118 a bit to run better in the U-2 flight environment and you have the F118 in the U-2S. I was on B-2 flight test when I heard they were going to reengine the U-2 with an F118 variant for vastly better performance and fuel efficiency vs the 1950s vintage J-75. I spent 12 years over 2 tours at Edwards and still live in the AV. I know when I hear a long steady roar of something coming out of Plant 42 that it's a U-2 climbing out.

The reason for the very steep climb is that the engine is sized for the thrust at altitude, which is dramatically less than at an airfield where they are really overpowered. The air frame is limited to a relatively low maximum speed to conserve weight, think of it as a jet powered glider. The only way to take off and stay within structural limits is to climb very steeply to altitude, which is the native environment of those airplanes, really powered gliders. The airplane could level off if required but that requires advance planning since it is quite a complicated evolution.

At altitude they also have a VERY narrow speed envelope to work in. something less than a 50 knot window.

Tarasdad; as I understand the flight envelop at altitude is less than ten knots from redline to stall and the pilots have to "back out of the cruise configuration" which is a real challenge each and every descent

In the early 1960's I was stationed with the AFPRO at the Lockheed plant in Burbank, CA. During this time many of the U-2 planes were being flown into the Burbank field for updates. My office was located so I could see the runway from my window. Always a thrill to see them coming and going. Since the same pilots landed at this field many times they knew about where the plane would stop. A ground crew would be waiting on the side of the runway and run along next to the plane as it stopped. They would grab the wing tip and balance the plane as it came to a slow stop. This prevented any scraping of the wing tips as came to a stop. The wheels were then placed under the wings. Probably only done by Lockheed since it was not the usual SOP.

As a contractor responsible for the design and operations support for a large U-2 ground station in Germany, the Flight Management System element was remotely located at RAF Alconbury. So I visited there a number of times in late ‘80s, early 90s. Riding along in a new Mustang chase car after watching the pilot suit up in his space suit more than 12 hours earlier , it was clear that the second pilot in the chase car was invaluable in getting that huge glider to set down safely . Takeoff sprint started with a cruise around by the second pilot as the pilot on board was not able to do the walk around

Had the opportunity to talk to a couple of U2 pilots when I was in the Air Force back in the late 60s early 70s. Sound like an incredibly challenging aircraft to fly. While at altitude the difference between going supersonic, disaster, and stalling is just a very few knots in airspeed! Likewise landing speed and stall are only like 3 knots apart! Amazing airplane and even more amazing pilots! Also was around a couple of SR71 pilots, they weren't very talkative.

Lovely Vid, Cheers! The Dragon Lady is one of two examples of what LMT's Skunkworks can do, the other example being the Marvel and Baddest of BadArses: SR-71 Blackbird (plus, the YF-12, YF-12A etc. and the A-12 OXCART) Although marked with the USMADS standard USAF, both U2 and SR-71 {as well as A & YF variants} were flown and/or operated by the CIA. In later years, when the designated USAF lettering applied to actual USAF use, Missions and payloads (film) were CIA, DIA, NSA and other non-US Military Depts. During the First Cold War, this kept things looking nice and "professional" You probably already know this stuff, but in case anyone doesn't, enjoy some random 🤓Info! Lol! Thank you for for the vids! Terri Newman it doesn’t need a catapult to launch and just because you didn’t see it occur doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened. I know of at least one case and it may be the case the original comment was about, I think it was during the same approximate time period but the U2 HAS successfully landed on a carrier and has successfully taken off from the same carrier under its own power and both ship and aircraft are fine. This has been declassified now so instead of calling the rest of us out here liars then do 5 minutes of research for yourself and find out what really happened Brother

@ScaniaVabis580
@ScaniaVabis580 6 жыл бұрын
miqiee... It is possible to bring the aircraft to a dead stop whilst maintaining a level wing, as soon as it comes to a dead stop one of the wings will gently hit the runway. You will usually see a 4x4 / suv tailing the plane down the runway with an escort car (was typically a a U. S. muscle car but now changed to Tesla), as soon as the plane stops they reattach a pair of wing wheels for it to taxi to a hanger. (Two guys can literally lift the lowered wing by pulling the elevated wing down level by hand! )

The pilot is wearing a space suit, and has limited visibility. The chase car driver, a u-2 pilot as well, directs the pilot on take-off and landing as to his altitude, attitude (nose up, nose down) roll (wing up, wing down) and yaw (is he headed straight down the runway)
