That guy with the black hair was Steve Perry from Journey! They’re known for “Don’t Stop Believing” and a bunch of other hits. One of the most legendary male singer and bands for sure 👌🏼

Yes, that was Steve Perry from Journey. The most known song is "Don't Stop Believing" however I think you should hear their song "Mother Father" from their 1981 concert in Houston. OMG you will be floored! :)

A few facts about this song and video: The day before the recording session, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie recorded all of the 40+ demo parts for everyone singing at Kenny Rogers' recording studio. The next night, after the American Music Awards, all of the performers went to Kenny's recording studio to create this masterpiece! Also, Michael actually sang background vocals on a Kenny Rogers song called "Goin Back To Alabama"!

Whenever I listen to this, this will be bringing tears to my eyes. It starts right at the point when Cyndi lauper hits that note! 🎵 It's because I know for a fact she blew everybody out of the water with their perceptions of who she is musically AND what she's capable of vocally. She'd been pretty much a pop star and she's in a room full of artists who have decades more experience than her. Musically she was the baby in that group BUT the great Quincy Jones believe in a talent and knew exactly where to place people. That note made people looking differently like that it may seem like nothing now because it was a short second in time and this song. Up to that moment she hadn't really done high scales, but she had done lower octaves and also borderline whispering octaves. So this took her audience into a totally new realm for her. The same thing goes to me when it becomes a call and response between Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen. Then my heart swells until almost bursting when Ray Charles begins to sing. I'm a long time huge fan of his~I love him! 💕

Yes, Cyndi really nailed that part! She's amazing. I read somewhere that her manager/boyfriend David Wolff put pressure on the producers that Cyndi should sing that particular part of the song. Whatever the truth is, she was perfect, and really made the song better. Love her.✌

The difference between this one and the remake is that for the original, there was a sign telling everyone to check their egos at the door. The remake was all about egos. Everyone brought their own talent but nobody had to change the song to match their style. The remake was all about competing personalities.

I believe another aspect was that the genius producer Quincy Jones or "Q" (Rashida's father), seen conducting, produced this song that Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote. Each artist in that room knew the need in Africa, and had mad respect for each of those involved.

Watch it buddy, “quite old” when I was listening to this on the radio when it first came out and after?!?! 😂 I consider myself older (younger) so all is good, believe me I am glad this is my era of music and artists. I can close my eyes and name every person (could from the first time I heard it before seeing the video even) and know every word. The story behind this is quite amazing as well, shows the talent we had that they just came into a studio after an awards show and just belted this out. The problem is this song gets stuck in my head so I will need to follow it with other music just to get rid of that, hopefully. Tonight it will be Gabriel Henrique, for the moment I am stuck on this guy. 💗 Had to come back and edit, again too lazy to look this up in your channel but black hair dude is Steve Perry from Journey, and if you haven’t that should be next on your list. Do not pass go and do not collect $200, IMMEDIATELY! You make me laugh! 💗

Travis, it's old, but it is a Gold Standard. I have watched it dozens of time. So many great artists participated. Sadly, many of them are no longer with us. Next time you watch it, close your eyes and just listen to each individual voice. See if you can match voice with names and faces. Steve Perry was your 'unknown' guy with dark hair. The second he sings, 'The Voice' is instantly recognized. The 'remake' or 'We Are The World' 2.0 is nothing like the Original. Kind of like a bad sequel to a Classic Movie. Loved your commentary. You actually knew many of the artists. The 'Boss' Springsteen has a unique style all his own. RIP Michael Jackson, we miss your trend setting music. Thank you for your video Travis. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.... And I listen to EVERYTHING! Like BB King and Dr Hook was another top concert of mine. The Rolling Stones Steel Wheels tour who introduced Living Color to the world AND has an African drum ensemble open up was awesome. Metallica, Guns and Roses, AND Faith No More as a TRIPLE Bill was great. Free convert of the Three Dog Night put on the Vietnam Vets was amazing to benefit the HARRY CHAPIN foundation that fights hunger. They made a "making of" video on this also, and it tells you who everyone is - especially for those of us who honesttly don't remember. My husband and I watched this the summer before I went into the Army, and it was the same year - and similar cause - as the Live Aid concert that Queen was in.

Late but I've always wished we could've gotten 1 R&B album or EP from Steve Perry. I know rock is his passion but i also know he would've crushed some R&B as of lover of that genre 😢 Bruce Springsteen's refusal to enunciate the end of his phrases kills me every time

Hiya Travis....I have been watching you for sooooooo long I figured it was time to introduce myself. I am Carole a French Canadian who lives in Ottawa Canada (our Capital)..I so love your reactions and I wanted to take the time to tell you so. You cover so much diverse music and I love it....but, if EVER you decided to do an Elvis tune I would be with you forever. I am an old lady of 71 years and have been an Elvis fan since I was 10 years old...gives you an idea...you could be my grandson...unfortunately I never had children but if I did, I would love you to be part of my family. Could you be kind enough to play an Elvis tune for me ?????? I am terminally ill and have a few months left. If you could find and play Elvis.."The American Trilogy" I would be forever in your debt !!!! You would make me so happy Travis....Loves ya...Carole (a French Canadian from Canada) 😘😘😘

I’m so sorry you are so ilI. I have been really sick myself with breast cancer. In Isaiah 53:5 it says, “For by his stripes we are healed.”’& I will pray to God and ask him for you to be touched by his loving hands. And I will thank God for his promises & his willingness to fulfill his promises, in Jesus’ name. And so it is♥️♥️

This was made after Bob Geldof asked Quincy Jones to lead the American effort on African aid. Many of the credits are in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Are_the_World. Written by the late Michael Jackson + Lionel Richie. Produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian. Keyboards by Michael Omartian. Released in 1985. Underrated. After the call-and-answer from Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder, notice the ascending vocal belt from the late James Ingram. Singers like Morissette Amon use this technique. RIP to a number of the fallen. Michael Jackson, James Ingram, Ray Charles, Harry Belafonte. The only non-American is Dan Akroyd. He is Canadian, from Toronto, ONT. Not a dual citizen then. David Foster, of Victoria, BC, wanted him to sing for the Canadian effort for African relief but American actress Donna Dixon, and wife of DA, and Quincy Jones convinced him otherwise. Some gentle jabbing that two producer/writer QJ did! They still remain friends! LOL Canada also had a response to Africa relief. Quincy Jones asked David Foster to form a supergroup. Suggested next video: Tears Are Not Enough performed by Northern Lights. This is the Canadian supergroup conducted by David Foster. Bryan Adams, Anne Murray, Geddy Lee + Neil Young are some of the singers. 🇨🇦 Link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLB-Zthi3Ke7eZ8.html.

There's an absolutely hilarious bit in the 'making of' on this with Stevie Wonder imitating Bob Dylan *to* Bob Dylan to teach him his part!

You are completely on point when it comes to Bob Dylan. You either love or hate. I absolutely love him. I choose the people I’m around depending if they are open to hearing something they’ve never heard before.
