Thumbnail, 0:22 on the left, 1:46 Airman Harrington, I went to SERE with him. I remember sleeping right next to him in the winter mountains of Washington for SV-80A. He's a tough guy, but calm and patient. I knew he would make it. He probably already knows he's featured in this video, but I'm gonna text him, just to make sure. Good for you Harrington!

I’ve been an enlisted aircrew member for about 10 years now. I vividly remember the SERE instructors at both Combat Survival School and Water Survival School. The information they taught me and my fellow aviators is top notch and gives us peace of mind knowing that we have those tools in our back pockets just in case we should ever face a survival situation in combat or peacetime.

When I was an instructor in the 80’s some of our instructors were former PJ’s. With all there Vietnam Experience, they wanted to teach the crews that there is a whole lot of things they can do to improve there chances,...also how to call in help,..without getting everyone killed.....it’s a lot more then just popping off a flare and waiting for rescue. Also rescue may not come for a long time,...best be ready for that!...bad weather, remote location can make for difficult rescue,....even in peace time, the first 24 hrs can be crucial, add an injury(which is likely)and you have a life or death situation, getting harder and harder as the storm won’t let up for days! Thus all the recurring survival training! We can replace aircraft,......Aircrews are very valuable,we need them back!!!!!!! Even enemy pilots are worth the effort!

@@dtaylor4200 The biggest lesson they learned is that there is no evasion. Expect rescue within before nightfall, or not at all. Thats why they started including extra radios in the aircrew survival kits; because a backup radio was far more valuable than the survival gear that youd be captured or killed, long before it became useful.

“Procheck” was a cat that lived outside the chow hall,....spring,summer,fall,and winter he lived off the mice and in his gratitude would leave a few on the front entrance to the survival school chow hall,..which was kinda cool, especially at a survival school.(Ever see the movie “Never cry Wolf” should be required viewing”)And we all figured less mice around the chow hall could only be a good thing. What could go wrong? Never got the whole story, but apparently “Procheck got into it with a couple of SP dogs,...dogs got hurt, and the SP’s wanted that cat! A few of us instructors got together, figured it was suspicious cause dogs come and go through that chow hall all the time and it’s never been a problem. “Procheck” had survived,..evaded capture,..indeed resisted strongly,....and escaped!! “Procheck must be saved! So with field jackets and gloves we went looking for him, good thing too as Procheck didn’t feel any need to be rescued. And was brought up to the CP. were he could live or until one of the fellas off base could give him a home. With all the very serious training and stress it sure did feel good to save a stray that was a respected member of the school. And our School Commander never said a word!

@@dutch4973 I am by no means a strong swimmer (or was 8 years ago), I could pass the rest of initial physical testing without concern but the first thing they have you do is get into a pool. The test is only 200 meters, but after the first 100 I didn't have the energy to keep myself above the surface. Overall was this the right job for me anyway? Likely not. Got reclassed into maintenance and got to spend the next 3.5 years visiting some cool places and meeting all kinds of people, so no real strong regrets about how it all went down. Had originally been a candidate for TACP, passed the PT part to qualify but failed the depth perception because that test is wack, which moved me into SERE (something that wasn't my first choice) but I told myself to make the best of it and see how far I could go because it was still a prestigious title and worth the sweat to stay in it. Turns out my question of how far I could make it wasn't that far haha

@@dutch4973 Idk if you have ever served, but I'd suggest that if not and it's something that you feel called to do then sign up for an enlistment before committing to a career. As far as picking SERE specifically as your job, I can't speak on behalf of what doing the job is actually like, but I can speak on going through 2.5 months of basic only to feel incredibly unprepared to tackle my program, because there's no second tries (well there kind of is, you can get washed back if there's like an injury or something but I wouldn't count on it). If your heart is set on SERE, don't worry about needing to be the next Bear Grylls before entering, just be in the best shape you can be in, swimming, running, pushups, situps, pullups. Master that before the next step, which is being given tasks to complete under limited time/sleep, but if you can cram through college, you should have experience with this.

170,902. In 1974-5 I was a boy of 9. I bugged my father...an Airforce veteran. From the 50’s. And I kept bugging him. I wanted a Ready Ranger! A backpack..plastic a toy. But it was all pararescue. Signaling..star charts..compass..light..compartments for my matches..and I had a Cub Scout knife. It had a periscope. And a radio.that didn’t work. But I would make the static noise in between my conversations on imaginary missions in the backyard. My Dad reminded me years later..as he heard me make the static sound...and eavesdropping on my classified missions. And it had completely slipped my mind...8 years later. When I attended a briefing. If your interested...sign up. Briefing 3:30. For Survival Instructor. SERE. Whatever that is? It ain’t what I originally signed on the dotted line for.....but instinctively I knew. This Was my Destiny!!!! My 3 older brothers had mixed advice on my turn in the military sausage machine. Army.Navy..Airforce..they tried them all...They all agreed. Special Forces! Are ACE! Better then you can imagine in tight spots...just naturally everybody turns to these guys. And they walk tall. They appear...to be best of the best. And ahhhh that’s were I wished....I had gone. So? SERE class of 8501. And ya know....that toy long gone. Outside of a eBay .reference toy ad in a comic book for $8.00 I can’t even find one.

stateside yes, downrange we do everything from CSAF operational planning to serving as the Isolated Persons advocate. The instructor portion never really goes away. You can teach Airmen, or army joes down range and FOB jump or even disappear in to a data masked unit for a few years. The possibilities once you get through your first four years are extremely diverse. Who focus on stateside training and slightly higher speed competitive assignments with STS’s, RQS’s, Army Rangers etc.

SST-OC is 3 weeks at Lackland AFB, next you get up to Fairchild AFB and knock out your pre requisite courses. S-V84 (Underwater Egress, 1 day), S-V85 (Water Survival and Parachute, 2 days), S-V97 (Resistance Training, ~1.5 weeks), and S-V98 (Basic Survival, 1 week). Your final pre requisite is Indoctrination which is two weeks. After that, you wait for team to start. There are two courses every year, one every six months. The one that starts in January is a winter class and the one that starts in July is a summer class. During those six months you will go through various phases like the ones mentioned in the video. CSS, or Core Survival Skills, is the first phase of the course and is said to be one of the hardest phases. After that you have the various biomes, navigation and teaching phase, escape phase and a combative phase. Overall you’re looking at about a year of training to transform yourself into a SERE Specialist from a civilian. Even more time if you spend a significant amount of time in Special Warfare Development before you enlist. Good luck, Hooah! 👍

Just curious, but home come in the video when Airborne School is mentioned, the video shows HALO (high altitude low opening)? Not the same as a static line jump. HALO is awesome, but it is generally pretty exclusive to the SF pipeline. This MOS seems worth it just for the guaranteed Airborne slot. Even in the Army, you only have a handful of Airborne units, so most Soldiers never get to go.

Pre training? Knowledge of high stress situations and problem resolution. How to influence and get the maximum out of fellas....you barely know...but must get very personal training. And your role...and what you will see around you. Sometimes things have to develop...before you give a lesson. It’s not enough for your knowledge..though your always learning about people under situations. It is predictable...if ya know what ya doing. And having the advice. Having the correct resolution....becomes apparent to everybody....they look at you. As some wise teacher. And? They pick your brain. You aren’t forcing lessons....They want them. And...it’s gonna hurt! Unique. Who trains special forces? Special people. Fellas..you remember for the rest of life...maybe. But the lessons. They still burn. Look at there face as they recount there. Survival Story! “Jaws”. Problem solving. Not a monster movie. Problem solvers movie. Knowledge + Experiance = Wisdom. Hooper...Quint....Sheriff. All with there KEW. Multiple lessons to be learned from this delightfully directed movie. His first really good movie. As the Sheriff..is trying to get up to speed on his knowledge of sharks. His boy is in a little boat tied up to the dock. Seeing and knowing..and just paranoid. He asks that he get out. The MOTHER is....wonderful. Like all typical mothers. She’s a calm...she could see her husband was under stress about the shark attack..and dealing with the situation. Funny! Funny! Funny! When she suddenly glances at picture(a very historic picture by the way.a real event caught on canvas.) She immediately becomes even more vocal. And backing up her husband now...with a additude twice her husband. “You get out of that boat RIGHT NOW!” Problem solved. With humor out of the most serious and horrific thought. My child possibly getting attacked by this shark....while in a boat.

The 4 mile go-or-no-go event is at SST-OC, the SERE selection course in Texas. You have to move at a 15 minute/mile pace or lower to pass and your ruck has to weigh in at least 60 lbs, dry weight. It’s closer to 70 lbs when you add your water. I want to mention that this is an orientation course to weed out certain individuals. A training course to see if you are capable of making it through a training course, if you will. After SST-OC, the nav legs get a lot longer, a lot faster, and a lot heavier!

Sam J, eventually, SERE specialists can move on to operational support squadrons at flying wings to provide refresher training to aircrew, or to postings at other locations, such as the Joint Personnel Recovery Agency. They also can deploy to combat locations, but SERE airmen do not directly participate in combat operations. Instead, they work as experts alongside pararescue teams in planning recovery and rescue operations. For example, a PJ team may not know how capable a downed pilot is of surviving, but a SERE specialist knows how well trained they are and how to operate the available equipment.
