Man...beating Evert and Navratilova back-to-back in the semis and then in the final in mid-80's!! You can't go tougher than that!…

What I loved about this matchup was Hana was never afraid to challenge Martina at the net. She would rush the same time as Martina and it was decided by whomever hit the better volley. Hana won 2 of the 3 grand slam finals they played. She had great hands and wonderful groundstrokes.

Great observation and comment

Hana seems to have enjoyed playing serve and volley players. Perhaps the faster tempo suited her more streaky temperament. For a long time in the early days, Hana seemed to have many more problems with Chris Evert and hadn't really figured out how to play her. I suspect Chris's consistency could be a serious problem for Hana, making her stop and think rather than play the instinctive, free flowing tennis she preferred.

Two great players, with such a pleasant game to watch. Hana M. was such a graceful player.

Still the best women's tennis match I've ever seen. Both of them played beautifully from start to finish.

I loved how Bud Collins described it during Hana’s Hall of Fame induction speech, “a pirouetting move that Pavlova would be proud of.”

What a triumphant year for the Czechs.... Lendl's and Hana's first wins! Watched both of them live.

The good old days : when players played with intelligence and understanding of the game - not just trading off bombing ground strokes like mindless automatons - Those were the days , my friends - we thought they'd never end ❤
@thomasgray54067 ай бұрын
Now the game is dominated by massive rackets generating huge power and speed and even women's players are very tall; in this final you had one at 5'7" and one at 5'8", both were tremendous players. I remember Martina saying a few years ago that she could counter (relative) power with "junk" on the ball by mixing up spin, pace, flight but that this would never work in the modern game because the power and pace don't allow for much of this. You'll also never get the variety of styles that featured in the past.

@@thomasgray5406 Yeah , what has been gained in power and speed has lead to a loss of finesse and style 😔

Stop exaggerating. The good old days had a few good players & a bunch of nonentities. They cruised until the semis.
@DianaMoon11428Ай бұрын
@@thomasgray5406 Average height of the top five women today (excluding Pegula) is 5'10". The athleticism far outweighs the past. I love the greats like these ladies (and Evert, Goolagong, Court, King) but let's face it: the fitness level & athleticism of the current players has lifted the overall competition. Look at the names both finalists faced until the semis - nobodies. However, I do think that players today could be more varied in shotmaking. Look at Barty and Jabeur.

Two women with one handed backhands playing serve and volley tennis. Take a good look, because you'll probably never see it again. But back then it was common, and clearly much more beautiful to watch.

To me Hana Mandlikova is the most talented of all women's tennis ever. She has always been a threat to Martina who feared her. Against Chrissie, who was steady and predictable, she knew what to expect but Hana was capable of executing all the shots, and the most difficult ones. She was unpredictable and so beautiful to watch when she was on...

hm i'm just looking to see which tennis player is the most talented, at least of those who "so far (as they say) in the so-called world rankings, haven't seen that many vids about mandlikova, hm, .., but to the point "afraid to play against madlikova, well navratilova doesn't suit mandlikova so much while navratilova even comes a little closer to madlikova, so to speak

Surprising that Evert Lloyd was the #1 seed in this tournament, since Martina won that year's Australian and Wimbledon, along with the previous year's US Open. Probably the best 2 women's serve and volleyers of all time in this match. Afterwards, Martina said "I didn't lose this match. Hana quite simply won this match.".

Just beautiful classic tennis, played the way tennis was meant to be played, angles, chips, volley, constructing points, not just cracking topspin groundies.

I always thought Hana Mandlíková was a very streaky player. When she was on she totally took the net away from Martina Navratilova but Martina just ended up becoming steadier mentally.

Hana's FH was better than Steffi's when it was on. Just looooved her game. Female Mac in a way. 1:12:08 - great point and you see both players with mutual respect as they walk off for the changeover neither one wants to cut off the other it's awesome.

Hana eating cheesecake before US Open match vs Chrissie..."nuff said....But she did have an incredibly graceful game
@romania47129 ай бұрын
I believe you are thinking of 1982. But it was Evert that ate the cheesecake and got food poisoning before her 3R match with Kate Latham. She would recover and defeat Mandlikova in the finals, but no cheesecake for Hana. 😊

@gregmcfarnon114029 күн бұрын
No, I believe you're thinking of 1983 Wimbledon. Evert became ill after eating cheesecake and requested that her 3rd round match against Kathy Jordan be postponed until the next day. The Wimbledon committee refused and she lost the match, the only time she had ever lost a GS match before the semi-final.

Remember the year that two lesbian Czechs playes in the finals. When Steffi and Chrissy lost in the semifinals, the ratings tanked. But none as bad as the 2004 finals when two Russians played each other in prime time. No Williams sisters not even a Davenport or Henin. Awful.
@romania47129 ай бұрын
This was the second highest rated women’s US Open final of all time with a 7.3 rating. The only one that beat it was 81 final between Austin and Navratilova which got a whopping 7.7. The highest rated Evert final was 1984 vs Navratilova at 7.1. The highest rated Graf final was 5.2 vs Seles in 1995. There was a brief resurgence with the Williams sisters. One of their finals got a 6.8 rating. The Clijsters/Wozniaki final got a dismal 1.1.

Fortunately tennis is not organised for the benefit of the most ratings worthy players and what does the players sexuality has to do with it?

2015 Pennetta Vinci was probably not what the Americans wanted to see
@pierdomenicosommati4438 ай бұрын
Mandlikova has been married to an Aussie man, then, later in her life, years after her divorce and her retirement, she had two twins babies, after she got pregnant without any medical intervention. All naturally, let's say. She's a lesbian-but-not-so-much, after all. Anyway, she was really a wonderful player. Unbelievable talent and great natural atlete, very fast and easily moving, extremely fluid. In her good moments, she could effortlessly crush the ball with any shot. Unfortunately, she retired a little bit too early.
@gerardmackay89095 ай бұрын
No response I see to the contributor who pointed out this was the 2nd most watched final in history so you spout rubbish presented as fact. Seems obvious to us all that the 1980s American viewing public neither shared your distaste for Czechs, nor lesbians.
