There was a huge heroin problem in Dublin in the 80s and this song and a few others were written about that. One of my favorite U2 songs... beautifully done about a terrible problem.

Bad has always been one of my favorite U2 songs. It’s eerily beautiful and takes you away to some other place familiar yet unfamiliar. I listened to this a lot my senior year of high school. Brings back a lot of memories, good and bad. Listen to the live version from around the same time, maybe Live Aid. Just sounds killer played loud.

@@felixcoderre6916 Indeed. "Kite" Live at Slane Castle Aug. 2001 & "Every Breaking Wave" Live at the 2014(?) MTV EMAs were showcases of incredible control & range. It's a Taurus thing, lol. I'm not proselytizing, just noting that Dave Gahan, the lead vocalist of Depeche Mode, has the most divine baritone voice, at age 58, after heroin & drink almost did him in. ALSILVERU2 I was a kid when the song came out and I still feel the same today. Bono even commented on that years ago. He noted that “Bad” was very unfinished and that it was okay with him because “We finish it every night when we play it live”. The song was also the result of an Eno experiment. He wanted a song based around a two-chord progression and wanted to stay within the confines of that alone. The Edge only has 3 parts that he repeatedly plays on the song and Adam went on the add some motion on live versions along with an official start to Larry’s driving on the drums when Bono sings “If I cut through myself...” (not to mention the opening sequence that they used for the song since the first time it was played on “The Unforgettable Fire Tour”). The only resemblance the live versions have to the original are (mostly) the same lyrics, and same meaning. Everything down to the key of the song has been changed from the original. The studio version was anything but ready for prime time.

This song makes me feel so much from the first chord. Legendary guitarist, legendary poetry.
@alysiamerdavid-wasser91654 жыл бұрын
Oh, I forgot how the opening chord makes me burst into tears!!! Edit: Yes, U2 songs sound similar. This is a song Bono penned after trying, (and failing) to rescue a friend who died of heroin OD. The lyrics abt wanting to trade places with his friend: "If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind.. If I could through MYSELF, set YOUR spirit free" as symbolism for *saving a friend through Grace* , just make me bawl my eyes out. 💗
@AndTheRoadGoesEverOn3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. So beautiful. My understanding is the song was not so much about Bono wanting to “trade places” with his addicted friend, but desperately wanting to give his struggling friend some of Bono’s own strength-perspective-grace so that the friend would have the power to let go of the addiction & be free. “If I could through myself set your spirit free, I’d lead your heart away, into the light and into day.” Btw, the “lifeless lifeline” is the cord on the microphone Bono signs into. This was written before wireless mics were cheap & common.
@AndTheRoadGoesEverOn3 жыл бұрын
(Con’t.) In old videos-like the Live Aid performance of Bad-you’ll see Bono hold up the mic cord and shake it ultra-meaningfully during the line, “If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind.”

This song still gives me chills. U2 was different than most other 80s bands. When everyone else was using synths and drum machines they featured the guitar and drum set. Their early albums had a unique idealism and sincerity. Nobody else could deliver a song like Bono. The drums build and build, (but I do miss the bass in this mix or remaster.) I’ve never been certain what Bad is about, but I take it to be about Ireland and the Irish people. The partition of Northern Ireland, the Irish people separated by this border, the Irish diaspora in places like America. 6:45 One of the signature sounds of U2 is The Edge’s guitar. I think that’s what you’re hearing. He used a delay effect on his guitar to give it that percussive texture, especially on the records from Boy to the Joshua Tree. It sounds like there is also a subtle synth sound in the mix during the second verse. If you like this song I recommend New Years’ Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Gloria, Bullet the Blue Sky, Pride (In the Name of Love), A Sort of Homecoming, Wire, Spanish Eyes, Red Hill Mining Town. I think I just love all the early albums. Achtung Baby! is obviously great too, but it represents a complete change of sound.

If it wasn't for Brian Eno we would never have had this song. It was an experiment, the band never finished it...almost a stream of consciousness. You might want to check out some of U2's other songs as they have over 14 studio albums; and have been going for over 40 years. Oh and also they happen to have sold more live than any other band in history. The Joshua Tree (1987) is one of the fastest selling albums of all time and is big in America but was gigantic in the late 80's/early 90's. Achtung Baby (1991) is probably U2's best album.

7:15 chick a cherry cola? Savage garden - I want you. I used to be the same with that song when I was a kid, Darren Hayes was singing pretty fast so didn't know the name of the song till years later. 7:00 Still haven't found what I'm looking for - U2 Big U2 fan but I've never heard of bad till now, probably because it wasn't a trademark hit of theirs but nonetheless great song and love the review!

The song that almost ended the band, and instead propelled them to super stardom. But yeah, the Live Aid version is the far superior.

Ok, so if you like this...you are just getting started with U2. They are an amazing band. Check out: Pride in the name of love, With or Without you, Walk On. I could go on and on.

U2 is Irish. Great band with many good and different sounds to their music. Bono is known for doing great charitable work all over the world. Another great song by an Irish group is "Zombie" by the Cranberries..

Lots to be said about U2. U2 guitarist The Edge, along with Andy Summers of The Police, were quite influential in that they got away from the standard power chord/ screaming solo style of guitar playing previously so prevalent in commercial music. U2 was one of the masters of what I call "build" songs - one chord progression, not the standard verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus arrangement - starting small and building up the instrumentation and energy as the song goes along. Along with so many bands of the New Wave era they placed a great importance on groove and pocket. When Punk and New Wave emerged they did not listen to their conerparts at their parties - they listened to Reggae and Third World Music (mostly from Africa; artists like Fela Anikulapo Kuti for example), which is ALL about groove and pocket, and is what you've mentioned (the beat) every time you reacted to a U2 track.

Ah, mid 80s U2. This is one of my favorites songs by this band, and I can't stand this version. U2 is one of those rare bands whose songs simply sound better live. Any live version of this song (particularly the one in the "Wide Awake in America" EP and the one from Live Aid) blows this thing out of the water. This, like many other U2 songs from that time, is about heroin addiction.

The song you were thinking off was ‘I Want You’ by Savage Garden. You should react to that next.

Please react to U2’s song “The Fly” off their album Achtung Baby.
