There was a huge heroin problem in Dublin in the 80s and this song and a few others were written about that. One of my favorite U2 songs... beautifully done about a terrible problem.

Bad has always been one of my favorite U2 songs. It’s eerily beautiful and takes you away to some other place familiar yet unfamiliar. I listened to this a lot my senior year of high school. Brings back a lot of memories, good and bad. Listen to the live version from around the same time, maybe Live Aid. Just sounds killer played loud.

U2 being an Irish band and having lived through a lot of Irish heritage songs, their tunes are reminiscent of Bagpipes drone sounds. You can play a single bass (drone) note through the entire song. The constant sentimental hum.

I lied to my parents and took a city bus downtown to buy their cassette tapes Boy,October and War from a Christian Book Store in the earlier 80s. Their early stuff has a lot religious references and that was the only place that sold them at the time. I was an absolute fanatic for decades.

If you have ever had a family member or a friend throwing there life away because of addiction , this song is a gut punch.

BAD is about a friend of theirs who OD on heroin.I saw them 3 times in the 80s and this was my favorite part of the show because watching drummer Larry Mullen play it live was awesome. He kills it.

This song still gives me chills. U2 was different than most other 80s bands. When everyone else was using synths and drum machines they featured the guitar and drum set. Their early albums had a unique idealism and sincerity. Nobody else could deliver a song like Bono. The drums build and build, (but I do miss the bass in this mix or remaster.) I’ve never been certain what Bad is about, but I take it to be about Ireland and the Irish people. The partition of Northern Ireland, the Irish people separated by this border, the Irish diaspora in places like America. 6:45 One of the signature sounds of U2 is The Edge’s guitar. I think that’s what you’re hearing. He used a delay effect on his guitar to give it that percussive texture, especially on the records from Boy to the Joshua Tree. It sounds like there is also a subtle synth sound in the mix during the second verse. If you like this song I recommend New Years’ Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Gloria, Bullet the Blue Sky, Pride (In the Name of Love), A Sort of Homecoming, Wire, Spanish Eyes, Red Hill Mining Town. I think I just love all the early albums. Achtung Baby! is obviously great too, but it represents a complete change of sound.

This song is about drug addiction and the despair that comes from watching someone you love go through it. The reason I love your reaction videos is because you are just a good guy. I have loved U2 for decades, and have seen them live a number of times. To me, their best work is their earlier work, up to and including the album, "Unforgettable Fire". I like their later stuff, too... but the passion and intensity of the earlier work is unmatched. I encourage you to react to U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday ", live at Red Rocks, a natural amphitheater in Colorado. It is astounding.

If it wasn't for Brian Eno we would never have had this song. It was an experiment, the band never finished it...almost a stream of consciousness. Bono has referred the to the song as a message of surrender. Surrender from addiction, alot of his old mates in Dublin died from heroin overdoses as a shot of heroin was cheaper than a spliff back then.

After an attempted suicide in 2004 with this song playing in my car, I can't listen to it without breaking out in tears. Super powerful song

You might want to check out some of U2's other songs as they have over 14 studio albums; and have been going for over 40 years. Oh and also they happen to have sold more live than any other band in history. The Joshua Tree (1987) is one of the fastest selling albums of all time and is big in America but was gigantic in the late 80's/early 90's. Achtung Baby (1991) is probably U2's best album.

Sort of like how I feel about November Rain for G&R or Black for Pearl Jam. It's the mix of quality vocals, great rhythm, and a message. This song - to me, is U2's anthem and legacy. Lots to be said about U2. U2 guitarist The Edge, along with Andy Summers of The Police, were quite influential in that they got away from the standard power chord/ screaming solo style of guitar playing previously so prevalent in commercial music. U2 was one of the masters of what I call "build" songs - one chord progression, not the standard verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus arrangement - starting small and building up the instrumentation and energy as the song goes along. Along with so many bands of the New Wave era they placed a great importance on groove and pocket. When Punk and New Wave emerged they did not listen to their conerparts at their parties - they listened to Reggae and Third World Music (mostly from Africa; artists like Fela Anikulapo Kuti for example), which is ALL about groove and pocket, and is what you've mentioned (the beat) every time you reacted to a U2 track.

Ah, mid 80s U2. This is one of my favorites songs by this band, and I can't stand this version. U2 is one of those rare bands whose songs simply sound better live. Any live version of this song (particularly the one in the "Wide Awake in America" EP and the one from Live Aid) blows this thing out of the water. This, like many other U2 songs from that time, is about heroin addiction.
