I remember this interview when it came out. Those beautiful Pop days! I was obsessed with the band around that time. I even got the Bono haircut and yellow sunglasses and looked like an idiot.

After the Vegas show MTV dropped U2 like a hot potato and basically ignored them until Beautiful Day and All That You Can’t Leave Behind came out.

So strange to see Bono's demeanor just be "off" like this; but you can hear it in the lyrics on POP and the performances around that time. U2 at the end of the 90s was a weary band that had somehow become more cynical in their attempt to self-satirize. They've still never looked cooler or sounded better, IMO; but seeing how drained they appeared gives me little faith there'll ever be any kind of revisitation to a similar style for them.

Only Larry Mullen remained in his style of clothing.

They weren’t ready for these early tour shows..Sure it’s hindsight but you can feel the anxiety particularly with Bono in a lot of these POPmart era interviews

Back when they didn’t need to rely on Best Of albums, doing album tribute tours, releasing an acoustic album of old songs or play a Las Vegas gimmick residency to make up for lack of progress.

it was also back when few people had the internet to be ponderous armchair critics. just remember typing is the easiest shit to do.

Need to rely on ? That's laughable. One could only hope to have 40 years of material to pull from, no one is asking them for progress and the people are still showing up, so let them be.

Probably one of their top albums they ever released. Are ye serious???? Wasn’t long after this few years later that their albums started to turn shite. Some serious gems 💎 on that pop album.
