MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom

I’ve recently reflected on this song because it is one of my favorites. There is a certain energy to it. Although it was released before the War album it feels like it’s a blend of their songs from War and post Joshua Tree. A certain pop post punk blend. It’s one of their best.

This is awesome. I was 13 when I first heard "I Will Follow" around 1980 and it shaped my musical tastes dramatically. I was a bit of an outsider embracing U2 in those days, but I've never looked back. This period of their career was magical, powerful and ballsy. There was certainly more to come. Thanks for sharing.

It's remarkable to me that Bono had a vision for their local culture and the world and a sense of what the band would/not be at such young age and expressed it so poetically. Not many songwriters would write about tough times for the purpose of finding the joy and optimism that can come of it, especially at that age. At 13:28 Adam and Larry have no idea what he's talking about. Edge is listening and catching on somewhat. Whatever thoughts they have now about activism, justice, etc., likely started with hearing Bono bursting at the seams with what he wanted to see change in the world. I am a stronger, more resilient activist because of what I've heard and watched Bono say and do over the years.

To me it's not so much a reaction of being clueless as it is "here he goes again..." Probably not the first time Bono went off on a tangent and certainly not the last. All of which makes U2 U2.

Incredible. Thank you for sharing. I've loved U2 all my life and only just saw them live for the first time in Las Vegas last year for my 39th birthday, which is 2 days before Bono's birthday. I was practically front row and they looked at me several times. Bono and The Edge actually waved at me (well, Edge nodded his head) then the 2 posed for photos for me while on stage! It was truly a magical evening and the tickets were all courtesy of a good friend and the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. I love U2's earliest works of music, even when they were just 4 punk rock lads in a band called Feedback. The evolution of this band really impacted my life deeply all throughout my childhood and teen years when "Achtung Baby" was released. That album rescued me in many ways... It remains to be one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time and I think it was years ahead of its time. Even now as an adult at 40, I still love U2. This set reminds me of their "Live: Under A Blood Red Sky" 1983 live album from their performance at Red Rocks, Colorado (USA), one of their best performances in the 1980's. It's basically the same song set. Thank you again so much for sharing this. God bless you. 🙏🏻🌹🙏🏻

willfade 79 I have a FB friend who was at Red Rocks that night. I am so jealous! I was lucky to meet the band back in April 1987 on the original Joshua Tree Tour. They were friendly and funny guys and took the time to talk to us fans after the gig even though I’m sure they were tired. I’m so glad this has been shared, I think a lot of younger fans have no clue what an awesome band they were when starting out. I’ve been a fan since 1982, and am thankful that I got to see them before megastardom. ❤️

I think The edge was heavily influenced by the likes of Tom Verlaine of Television and John McGeoch who was in many different new wave groups including John Lyndon's PIL and "Siouse and the banshees"...other punk/new wave guitarists and bands who influenced the edge...the dead Kennedys..the Ramones...the police..the damned...gang of 4s Andy Gill was also an influence on the edge (as well as red hot chilli peppers)....another huge influence was joy Division .. songs like "no love lost" would have influence the edge greatly...I've heard a radio session version of "no love lost" and the guitar sounds very like edges heavily delayed effect sound from u2s first two albums

"I Will Follow" and "Gloria" did a lot to get them there, and maybe One kept them together.

U2 never stopped working in their first three years with Island Records. They appeared anywhere they could and always gave 100%, because they knew they could cut it live. There was no snobbery either. They were as passionate on teatime kid’s telly as they were on “serious” music programmes like Countdown or OGWT, and never looked down their noses at those younger audiences in the way that many English groups did. If they had struck an attitude, Island may well have either dropped them or cut their investment and ran down their contract.
