This song comes from my fave u2 album. From the first notes of Zoo Station or the guitar on The fly, Even better than the real thing, or the fabulous UltraViolet. It took balls to make a record like this, so many great songs that stand the test of time. Their 90's period was their most creative, having said that Unforgettable Fire, showed incredible maturity and the Joshua tree is just a masterpiece. All that you can leave behind is great, kind of like The Beatles White album with the guys getting back to basics.

Gloriously lo-fi. Some of the guitar tones on this album are to die for. Of course they became so popular that they got the inevitable backlash from the next generation. And, to be fair, a lot of those youngsters may only know U2 from their later ironic excess phase. And it's also kind of hard to get my head wrapped around the fact the Josha Tree album is now almost FORTY freaking years old, and that it's as far back in time to current teenagers as, say, Frank Sinatra or Cab Calloway was to me as a teenager.

For the last 15/20 years there has been a backlash against them mainly down to Bono’s pontifications. Their standing has suffered because of this. A slight re-evaluation and focus on the music from a collective music media would be fitting.

This song is the perfect example of how Bono's lyrics played with the duality of physical and spiritual love. He's talking about God She is God in the feminine. :) At the end of the tune you can hear him sing "The Spirit moves in mysterious ways"...

Zoo TV Outdoor Broadcast from Kansas City here - October of 1992. I'd just come back from boot camp, and my brother surprised me with tickets to the U2 show. Lex has mentioned on other U2 reactions that the instruments seem a bit downplayed, and they generally are on their albums. You need to see them live to get the good stuff. They do not get enough credit as a live band, but they're definitely one of best between 1980 - 2000. I was lucky enough to watch Beck open for them, again at Arrowhead in KC, just a few years ago. That was good stuff.

Alternative rock gods! ❤️, '80s, '90s, '00s. They were one of many who paved the way. Post-punk, new wave in the earlier years. Lots of hits form, them. Too many to list. Just read the comments below or above. 😆 they've influenced many bands and modern indie/alternative rock bands over the years. U2 songs, videos are usually very intellectual as well. Political at times, too. Rock n Roll hall of famers , too.

Very good song. I found while helping my mom take care of my dad during his last few weeks of battling cancer back in 2019, that I kept going back to "Ultraviolet" from Achtung Baby, and "This Must Be the Place" from The Talking Heads. Both songs gave me a lot of comfort. The "There is a silence that comes to a house / Where no one can sleep / I guess that's the price of love / And I know it's not cheap" lines from "Ultraviolet" just took on a whole new meaning during that time. It really made me realize that my family was not alone - we were just sharing in the human story like so many families before and after that time. It also helped drive home the notion that grief and love are actually the same thing.

Thought about this song often working with my sister at a software company. She managed a group of mostly male coders who pulled-off some amazing stuff.

From Music genius: The song describes a man who doesn’t understand love. It also draws religious parallels because of its glorification of women to a god-like level.

I've always thought that it's not literal deification, but more a bit of a thought experiment about the more feminine aspects of divinity (ie. The Holy Spirit in Christian tradition). But also about the general feminine energy that makes men go "wubbawubbawuabba" without really understanding why. Or like with this video, maybe a little thought experiment about The Dance of the 7 Veils. Bono's lyrics are heavily influenced by Oscar Wilde.

@@sealdrup I just remember a b-side from the album called Salome, and I'm guessing that these songs are connected a bit.

I think you all would really like "And I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" on the Rattle and Hum album. Done in a minimalist production with the Harlem Baptist Church Choir.
