it must be such a blessing for 4 friends to start a band at a young age, remain friends their entire lives, and produce the most magical music together. I can't even imagine the bond they must have.

I first heard this song in 1987, when I was a fifteen-year-old schoolboy. I was living at that time in a provincial Soviet village behind the Iron Curtain, and only Saint Santa knows how the cassette with U2 songs got into my remote place. It was this song that settled in my heart from the first chords and it seems like it will forever. I would like to wish everyone reading my comment a Happy New Year! Bono’s vocal is just so achingly beautiful. Like all great albums ‘the Joshua tree’ still sound so fresh after all these years. A staggering piece of work and for me they’ve never got close to it since.

I still hear my late son's voice through every single word used in this song. How I remember getting into his vehicle the morning he died, and the CD in the player went straight to this song. Deep song, for deep people, not many will know what went through the mind of the writer of the lyrics. But Bono did an unsurpassed genius of a performance. Thank you Bono, I will be forever grateful for this memory.

Today I'm quiting my addiction its gonna be a struggle but I'm trusting my friends and most importantlyy my family to help me. I lost my way and I need to find the light. I first heard this in march 1914 on the western front, playing on an old sousaphone. How Misss those days, still gives me goosebumps 115 years later

4 men together since the eighties...no replacements....tight group. We knew they were special in the 80's. The legacy builds every year. Truly icons in music. This version brought me to tears. You can only have this soul and passion if you have lived it.

March 1987 I walked into my local pub and my best mate said “have you heard U2’s new release”. He put it on the duke box (remember those) my mind was blown away, the song still gives my goosebumps 30 or so years later.

Man, this was back when music was still magic. Don't get me wrong there's still some talented people out there, GOOD music is hard to make. I grew up in the 2000's and I am glad I got to listen to songs like these through my parents. Music back than was something else. No music nowadays makes me feel this way. No songs about money, living the RICH life, no autotune. Just pure talent and love.

It's an astonishing song. The way it builds to a crescendo of raw, gut wrenching emotion. It's like he's tearing his soul out of his body. You're not human if you aren't moved by it. Massive shout out also to The Edge whose harmonies are always stunning.

I come back to this live version. This song may be a simple chord progression. But with that rumbling base, unique percussion, beautiful yet mysterious guitar, great vocals and melody it’s an absolute masterpiece.
