UAW strike: 'Pay is a priority' for auto workers, professor says

UAW members head to the picket lines to strike against the Big Three automakers Ford (F), General Motors (GM), and Stellantis (STLA) after their labor contracts expired amid negotiations between employers and the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. Michigan State Professor Peter Berg and Kate Bronfenbrenner, Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations Director of Labor Education Research, join Yahoo Finance Live anchors Julie Hyman and Diane King Hall to discuss the impact of a prolonged auto workers strike on certain communities and the benefit demands union leaders are trying to leverage against the auto manufacturers. "They have effective arguments there in that there's been a decline in real wages since the mid-2000s... in the auto industry," Berg, the Director of Michigan State's School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, says. "And at the same time, you've seen profits really increase for the auto companies." "The companies making profits, not just this year but in the proceeding years, and they've decided to put the profits into the CEOs and not the workers," Bronfenbrenner, who is also the Co-Director of the Worker Empowerment Research Network (WERN), explains.

The tier system is unfair. The fact is its mostly unskilled labor and there are many, many who would take that pay and benefits as it stands.

So many people that are backing the union are clueless on costs of running a business. 40% pay bump and then add time and a half or double time, however they do their overtime, you don't see how that raises costs? Smh.

The more things are taken from rank and file the more I see the need for unions. CEO pay is way by out of line while hourly employees just face takeaway after takeaway. While I historically haven’t supported unions I do known. Just had my ex company screw us retirees on medical If we had a contract probably wouldn’t have happened. Huh buffet.

Screw the downstream workers, right?? You greedy slackers, people are losing their jobs because you want 4 day work weeks and a 40% raise, I hope plenty of members lose everything they have.

The UAW workers have been giving back for the past 17 years while the executives and CEO take home millions. Give the workers what they want or take a seat and let someone else do your job. We want a 40% increase in pay to make up for what we have given in past negotiations. We want a defined benefit pension plan. We want you to eliminate the two tiered system of worker pay. Auto prices have increased by 30% in the past 4 years. GM PROFITS in past 4 years = $21 BILLION (17% Increase since 2021) Ford PROFITS in past 4 years = $24 BILLION (9% Increase since 2021) Stellantis PROFITS in psst 4 years = $18 BILLION (26% Increase since 2021) In the past contract negotiations, the workers were requires to GIVE UP wage increases and benefits. Now it is time for the big 3 automakers to give back what they have taken for our loyalty and labor.
