Great video. One slight correction. Schofield Barracks in Hawaii was named after John McAllister Schofield. The Schofield revolver was named after his brother, George Wheeler Schofield. Both served in the Civil War and both of their histories are worth looking into for those interested.

I was told that. Schofield killed himself after all was done after he made the Schofield. Nobody knows why. I have the Uberity made buy this company. I paid about 1,300.00 for mine. Nichol plated and what a beauty. Probably will not fire this weapon. i also have a Rugar Vicuero with some grips that I bought and changed to entire look of this beautiful weapon. Kevin. @@kevinquinn3763 Lt. Colonel George Wheeler Schofield committed suicide using a Smith & Wesson Model 3 "Schofield" on 17 December 1882, several years after the U. S. Army Ordnance Board dropped that pistol from its "standard issue" status. Logistical problems resulting from confusion between the .45 Long Colt cartridge and the shorter .45 Smith & Wesson were the stated cause. The Colt Model 1873 could chamber and fire both .45 Long Colt and .45 Smith and Wesson, whereas the "Schofield" could not. Another unstated reason for the deposition of the S&W Model 3 "Schofield" was the appearance of nepotism on the part of Gen. John McAllister Schofield, George W. Schofield's elder brother, who was the chairman of the Ordnance Board when the purchase contract was signed, including a $0.50 per gun royalty paid to G. W. Schofield, a condition set by the Ordnance Board initially rejected by Smith & Wesson's lawyers as unwarranted. Schofield left no "suicide note", no indication of his reasons, though the replacement of S&W revolvers with Colt revolvers was unlikely to be one of them. Some people believe the reasons were health-related. There are rumors that Schofield suffered from locomotor ataxia, a degenerative condition associated with syphilis.

I have a “Wells Fargo” cut down version and I love it. Uberti reproductions can handle any standard pressure factory .45 cartridges. So while cowboy loads make it a little gentler to shoot for fun and cowboy shooting events, they aren’t necessary. Unloading is almost as fun as shooting.

Thank you for the video and history of the revolver. I had not read of an explanation of how to load these revolvers until your succinctly done instruction. I agree that this time period had some of the most elegant designed firearms.

I have a Nicol plated Uberti and it is just beautiful. I must say that I really don't want to fire it. I paid around $1,300.00 for it and its so beautiful I' just going to keep with other revolvers that I collect. It as faux grips in pearl and want to change that to stag or elephant tusks faux of course. Do not believe in using real pearl or elephant tusks. YOU should think about getting one of these. i also have a Ruger Vaquero in polished stainless steel. If you ever have a choice get stainless. You scratch in the just a few easy steps you can get rid of any scratch. I did make grips for my Vaquero and bought the cheap grips that were pure white and made them look like real elephant tusks. A very sharp knife and some leather dye. Some of my friends have followed suit after I showed the my grips. I'm not bragging but you should try it. There great. They look so real. I don't own a Schofield (though I really want one) but I saw a very interesting video that claims you can safely carry SIX rounds in this handgun, and is one of the big advantages over the SAA style pistols. Since you have access to the entire cylinder of the Schofield when it's broke open, you can choose how you want it to sit on the firing pin when you close it. If you position the firing pin between 2 chambers instead of on one it is safely rested between the 2 chambers (the rim of the cases keep the firing pin in place between them), not lying over top of a primer, and will not rotate by hand/accident until it is cocked because the firing pin is lodged between the 2 chambers. The guy claimed he had never noticed any extra wear mark on his revolver from doing so, and his firing pin is not damaged. Again, I don't actually have one so I can't confirm. I did see his demonstration video on KZfaq though and it looks like a pretty solid technique. The comments sort of confirmed that people used to do that back in the day, but again, they're just comments. We can only read about this stuff. Definitely worth trying out if you have one of these I think.

It also has a safety in first cock, which is how the manual says to carry it with 6 rounds. I’ve got a lot of confidence in that safety, too. That hammer ain’t moving until you finish cocking it, unless you straight up break the gun.

I always thought the Colts were made to carry hammer down between cartridge rims. Seems weird to design a gun to carry 1 round short of a full load.

I just checked mine because I was curious. I wasn’t able to get the hammer to sit between 2 cylinders. In order to break it open, the hammer has to be in half-cock. So in order to do what you said, I would have to load it, cock it and then de-cock it, but once you cock it it’s surprisingly hard to coordinate putting the hammer down and rotating the cylinder at the same time. I don’t think it would be impossible but didn’t want to risk a ND screwing around with it. That being said, when it’s in half-cock, the hammer pin is nowhere near the cylinder, so I think it would be safe to carry it with six in that state because for the hammer to go down it would have to be cocked fully and the trigger pulled. It doesn’t seem likely the hammer would drop on its own from half-cock, even with a significant force applied. The cylinder does rotate freely in half cock though, which feels like it might be a little annoying/unnerving if you were walking around with it in your hand. If it was in a holster I don’t think it would rotate due to the holster.

45 acp was developed to copy the ballistics of the 45LC it was such an effective round. Had I been law enforcement in the old west I would have taken one of these over the colt.

The .45 ACP was developed to copy the ballistics of the 1879 Army cartridge which would chamber in either the SAA Colt or the S&W Schofield . It was found that the troops preferred the reduced load of the S&W as it recoiled less and made the target just as dead.

I have a 5 inch Nickel plated Uberti Schofield with Faux Pearl grips. It was pricey but so worth it. Its very accurate and it runs like a swiss watch. With speed loaders its just as fast to reload as my Glock, Sig or 1911.

It is a really nice gun too! Mine is the 5-1/2 barrel & color case hardened frame,way too nice to loan to my deputy Sheriff nephew!

Cowboy loads are lighter than modern loads because they require less velocity, so it's not a matter of chamber pressure. It's not the cylinder that's in danger should you load modern rounds into an old-style revolver-- it's the rifling that's prone to getting damaged by the copper jacket neccessary to shoot higher velocity ammunition. These guns-- Italian repros included-- require soft lead bullets to preserve the barrels. And soft lead bullets cannot be fired beyond 1000 fps without leading the barrel.

I have had all 3 barrel lengths of the Uberti Schofields, I use the 5" and 3 1/2" ones in .45 Colt for Cowboy Action Shooting. Wonderful guns.

Hi, thank you so much for this video, im from the UK so we dont have ready use of guns like you guys do in the USA but still there are only 2 revolvers i have ever loved, (you can blame Clint eastwood for that! lol) this one and the 1851 Colt Navy revolver, i wish i could have a real one of these 2 but ill just be contented with a co2 versions of both, and i think you are sooo rite, these revolvers just look so much better then the modern guns, like beretta's, Colt M1911, etc, i just carnt explain it, its just something special about a revolver gun and the way it works!. thank you for this vid loved every minit of it so take care and have a great day

I never appreciated these. They was like a red headed step child of the west... The Colt model P was THE REVOLVER of the ol west in Movies. Then Clint made his block buster with the " Schofield kid" and I had a light bulb light up.... Another GREAT VIDEO Al!!

Was the method of reloading really a benefit? With the Colt you can top up never dry. I know i can reload a Colt at a walk and Mabey at a lope, but i would'nt try a Schofield unless standing. Thanks

Thank you for the video! I want to say one thing, it is possible to have this gun loaded with 6 safely but takes a little practice. If I'm not mistaken then the cylinder rotates freely to both sides yes? When you load six you can, I've seen this, close the gun so that the fireing pin sits securely between the two rims if two cartages and wont budge a bit. A gentleman by the name of plowboysghost in his video ("Tactical" Schofield carry and reloading) demonstrates this, but of course it is safer to carry it with five. Just wanted to throw this out there :)

Love the way people say you load 5 when they used the revolver and they were in a fire fight they would load 6. Also the Schofield you could drop the hammer between the cylinders and it would sit between cartridges. So you could load 6 unlike the colt.

God bless the spaghetti westerns. Without those movies I seriously doubt that Italians would make such a great replica guns of the Old West. And beside the Italian companies (Pedersoli, Uberti, Pietta) I cannot name any other companies for any country which makes decent and close replicas of the Old West guns.

If I may ask. Is the frame on a Schofield chambered in 45LC the same as one chambered in 44-40? I ask because I have one chambered in the latter cartridge and am contemplating getting the barrel and cylinder for 45 LC to put on it.

Yes they are the same frame. However a new barrel and cylinder will probably end up costing almost as much as simply buying a .45LC revolver.

I have this gun and love shooting and the history that goes along with it. Well covered in your video. But it's actually an old English name well-known to be pronounced with a hard "c" like Skoe-feeld, not Show-feeld. Just like we don't go to Show-al we go to Skoo-al. School and Schofield. I would be interested in your source for the pronunciation since it was stated as fact and historical accuracy is important.

Arent there modern replicas that somehow install a safety mechanism that you could load all six chambers? I love these old revolvers and also think they are the most aesthetically pleasing, but the 5 rounds load and one empty chamber somehow REALLY bugs me :) Im OK with not having 15 round magazine, but the empty chamber...

Browning designed .45ACP specifically for the 1911 to match the performance of the US military's .45 Colt sidearms of the time, so if you like God's Caliber, you'll be happy with what .45LC gives you.

The Uberti replicas will handle any standard pressure .45 LC loads. You don't have to shoot bunny fart cowboy loads.

Pretty sure no one back then called the 45 Colt a 'long Colt' You either wanted a 45 Colt or a 45 Schofield. Also.. Colt never said to load 5 instead of six. They said to load all 6 and use he first notch or 'safety notch' Not sure the Smith had that notch but it is a safety notch and it holds the hammer back just far enough so that the firing pin is not touching the primer. People today will tell you that it is not safe to carry a percussion revolver 'between chambers' which is nonsense and they also were meant to carry loaded with all six rounds. Colt did not build guns with useless safety notches and pins. But if you do think that.... what happens when you do cock the gun and it is a false alarm say? You gently lower the hammer onto a live round then give it one click to the safety notch. For the gun to accidentally go off something would have to hit the back of the hammer hard enough to break the safety notch AND still have enough left over to touch off a primer.

hi, to you ...!!! i think you wrong when you reload this revolver and leave disalligned the empty chamber from the barrel and then close cock and discharge the hammer on the empty chamber ...!!! simple, because you can alligned the empty chamber with the barrel soon and then low the hammer without cock it ...!!! bye 👍

Sorry, but the correct English pronunciation is with the ch as a K. The barracks are also pronounced as a k. Saying it as sh will get you the hairy eyeball and laughed right off the island. Tropic Lightning 25th Infantry Division.

Actually they don't eject straight up they must be turned sideways at a downward angle to eject properly. This is a common misconception by amateurs.

"Sch" should be pronounced like in the word "school". You're pronouncing it like if it was "sh". Very irritating to listen to it through the entire video.
