This is my unboxing and walkthrough of the Ubiquiti Unify In-Wall 802.11ac Wi-Fi Access Point (model: UAP-AC-IW).
This isn't a review of the UniFi platform, but it aims to answer the questions I had before buying. Things like:
What's in the box?
How do you mount it to the wall?
Will it fit with my existing back-box?
Will I need additional hardware to install?

Thanks Tom, this was really helpful as broadbandbuyer.com state it will not fit a UK single or double gang backbox but clearly it does! The manual looked like it did fit ok and your visual confirmation proves it, so very annoying when suppliers give incorrect information and mislead. Helped me confirm I could complete a job!

They might have been referring to the older model, which I don't think had such good world-wide support for fixings. Glad to hear I could help :)

yeah, that's what I thought so I checked the older model and they don't mention it won't fit a UK backbox on that one! Someone needs to cut and paste the statement from the new one to the old one!

Thanks Tom - great unboxing that cleared up lots of little questions I had. I am still in two minds as to which POE switch I will use, I am leaning towards the EdgeSwitch 8 150W over the UniFi Switch 8 150W; I presume that you might of weighed those 2 POE switch products up too?

I think they're pretty much the same hardware, but the UniFi switch is all managed by the Unify controller, so it's all in one place. Also, I wasn't sure whether the EdgeSwitch served up the same level of information to the Unifi Dashboard, so I decided to stick with the UniFi Switch 8 150W (there's another video of this in the playlist) to make sure.

Stick with Unifi, it's easier to manage. The EdgeSwitch is rumored to one day join the Unifi world but that remains to be seen. That said, the EdgeSwitch is still great and easy enough to manage but after you get a few UAPs, switches, and maybe even consider their routers you'll be happy to have all of it in one place.

You talk about the protrusion of the rear square; don't forget you will need extra depth for the RJ45 connector beyond the ~1cm you mention. Personally I think it would be much better to have added an IDC/Krone punchdown strip, as most in-wall CAT5/6 is unterminated. Or better still a module that is an RJ45 male with a Krone punchdown on the back of it.

thats because mosts houses in the uk are brick houses and not made out of match sticks, aka "studded walls" Fires best friend, So the AP cannot go "IN WALL"

It doesnt come with a POE Injector that they usually include with their wireless?

Nice video, can you tell me if I can do this with this device I can't really see an answer for it when I search. I have a UAP-AC-PRO and I want to get a wired internet connection into my garage but cant run a cable, so can this be used to connect back to my UAP-AC-PRO wirelessly then simple use the two ethernet ports on the bottom of the wall unit for internet in garage?, of course I will need an PoE injector to power it but I will not be feeding DATA into the back of it. Can it work like a wifi bridge of sorts. thanks

Hi Tom Did I miss it, or did you mention the dimensions of the protruding square on the back? (the depth I saw you measure, but not the edges)

Thanks for the video. Can you use one of the LAN ports at the bottom of the device to connect another device, like a Philips Hue Bridge or laptop?

These devices are absolutely useless for the UK, Unless you make templates that protrude out of the walls, like a plug socket etc, then fix this useless device to it
