Episode 51
The Adventures of Bayou Billy is one of those NES games that just seems impossible at first - Even the first level is difficult! If you do survive Stage one, you'll discover that there's a lot more to this game than just being an average Double Dragon clone set in the Louisiana bayou. There are on rails shooting levels that can be played with a controller or even the Zapper light gun! Beyond that, the developers also included a few driving levels, because why not?
Bayou Billy was made buy Konami, the legendary developer that brought us games like Contra and Castlevania. The original game released in Japan was called Mad City, but Konami decided to radically change the game during the localization process. Instead of just translating some Japanese text to English, they gave the game a massive overhaul, and in the process decided to crank up the difficulty.
So what got changed when this game was brought to North America? In this episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* Strategies for completing the challenging Beat 'Em Up levels - Master these techniques to DESTROY GORDON'S GANG!
* Completing the PRACTICE LEVELS - Are these pointless, or not?
* The secret way to DESPAWN ENEMIES so you don't have to fight them at all!
* Tips to master the on-rails SHOOTING STAGES! Which mode to choose, and why!
* How to use ALL of the different WEAPONS! Know which ones to keep and which ones to discard!
* The SECRET to gaining EXTRA LIVES!
* How to complete the treacherous DRIVING LEVELS - Keep your Jeep intact!
* The strategy for defeating ALL of the game's difficult bosses... even GORDON and his heirs, ROCKY and ROCCO!
Thanks for watching!

In Mad City on Famicom, Gordon will start to frown at the end of his messages when you get to shooting stage in New Orleans like he is becoming afraid Billy is getting too close despite the army Gordon has sent after him. As shown here, Gordon always smiles at the end of the messages like he knows this is the NES version where everything is more difficult and he can win at anytime because of it.

I've completed The Guardian Legend in both normal and TGL password mode multiple times. Bayou billy and Battletoads are the 2 games that the Japanese version is a good bit easier because they were trying to keep people from beating the game in a rental in the US. At least Bayou billy is easier than Arkanoid or The Mutant Virus. I still don't know what the Guardic Gaiden poster is made of. If there is a print of my avatar please let me know, I don't know why they had to change the artwork.

The original Japanese version (Mad City) also had a couple of alternate endings. In that version, you could still control Billy when Annabelle runs to you, and your actions determine the ending. In fact, if you actively avoid her for a minute or two, you get the "bad" ending where she just complains that you didn't really come to save her and then the credits roll with no one standing the arch.
@PikangsFutaba
@PikangsFutaba 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, well, actually there are 2 bad endings, the one you mention, and another one that always happens in Loop 1 if you completed at least 1 practice mode stage (which basically is like the Dark Queen rant about you cheated your way in Battletoads & Double Dragon on NES or Sega Genesis, by the way, if you complete a 2nd Loop after that you can actually get any of the other 3 endings like if you didn't play the practice mode stages), the good ending is the same as the USA ending by just hugging Annabelle and the alternative good ending, when Annabelle hughs Billy you have to hold some buttons until they start to talk (if you know how to get Red Falcon's secret message in the JPN version of NES Contra, you know that you have to hold those same buttons in JPN Bayou Billy... AKA: Mad City).

My absolute favorite nes game. I loved Dundee so this felt like a video game similar to it even though it wasn't. Sure its hard as hell, but that's the fun of it. I also remember how different of a game it was when it went from beat em up to rail shooter to racing game. I thought was badass when it first came out. By the way, a lot if not all of the enemies are named after famous French people. Toulouse L'Attack is named after Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec who was a famous French painter that lived in the Moulin Rouge. Most wouldn't know that except the older people the game was targeting I guess.
@JD-tl4zs
@JD-tl4zs 2 жыл бұрын
The game wasn't targeting older people. The education of historical western concepts and works of art (especially literary fiction), especially in the 70s, 80s, and 90s in Japan far exceeded the same sorts of education in the west. The localization team of an old game like this would have been made up of Japanese people who speak English (quite poorly) as a second language. They probably unironically (and bizarrely) thought "of course overseas kids know who Toulouse-Lautrec is!" and chose all of these French references based on the only thing they knew about Louisiana; that it has a French history.

Very informative breakdown of the origin of this game and its differences compared to the original Mad City Famicom version! Thank you for putting this together :). Referencing the Archie comic book was a nice touch hahaha! Excellent strategies as always! Keep it up and NEVER give up! I have a lot of history with this game, since I was literally stuck with it as a kid. Back in 1991, I had lent P.O.W. (NES), which was my favorite video game at the time, to a friend for The Adventures of Bayou Billy. He lent it to another friend who somehow lost it (bullsheet!) and told me that I could keep his game, in order to make up for my loss. Rather than putting up a fuss, I accepted my destiny and struggled with The Adventures of Bayou Billy throughout my youth. While it was far too difficult for me to finish as a child, mostly because of the car levels, I eventually did so an adult in the year 2000. However, that was not enough! Oh no, it was personal! I made it my mission to TERMINATE this game in every possible way hahaha! Not everyone is aware of this, but after beating the game the first time around and "The End" message appears (what is that voice even saying anyway? Sound like "highffff" with a bunch of static hahaha!), a second quest can be challenged by pressing Start here. There will be more enemies and they will take more damage than before. The same thing will happen after beating the game for a second time in a row, as this will unlock a third, more challenging quest. However, the game does not get any harder afterwards and will remain on the third quest difficulty level, until the player decides to stop playing. Mad City was likely billed as a "TRIPLE HARD ACTION GAME" (as seen in its commercial) for this very reason, as it also has three difficulty quests, if played and beaten consecutively. I figured this out from the former world record speedrunner of The Adventures of Bayou Billy, by the name of Tom Votava. He was able to max out the game's score by beating it over and over again during the same sitting, as the score will carry over, in the same Konami tradition as seen in other games such as Castlevania and Contra. I went on to challenge and beat Tom Votava's points run, along with his speedrun, as I figured out that entering the final boss battle with Rocky & Rocco, without a bulletproof vest or weapon, reduces the amount of punishment that they will be able to absorb, which Tom did not realize (and no one else at that particular time either). I'm guessing that the game did this to even out the odds, surprisingly enough! The only reason why I even made this discovery, was because I put myself through a no items no death challenge back in 2009, as seen below: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/huCUpdFp25q5dWg.html

You missed a very special detail regarding the *Blackie Blue* enemies: their main movement pattern is that they are always aiming to line themselves up perfectly with you, before advancing towards you, and then getting close enough to begin their beatdown upon you. If their sprites aren't aligned with yours, they stop for a bit, and then they try to vertically move into getting lined up with you again. What if you whip a Blackie Blue once (and from a great distance), quickly move slightly up or down and both at an angle away from him, he tries to re-align with you, and repeat the process until the guy falls over from ironically being beaten black and blue? I say you could, though it's obviously trickier to pull off when you have to deal with more than one of these guys. Use this strategy to shorten the damage you take from them.

I'm guessing that Toulouse L'Attack is an obscure reference to the French artist Toulouse Lautrec. Particularly considering that they have Jacques Killsteau

I can't wait to sit down and watch this. Listening while breakfast cooks. You're a fantastically consistent content creator UCBVG. Your stuff is unique. It's not a speed run, it's not a let's play or long play. These videos are their own wonderful thing. Also when are you going to do Clash At Demonhead? It's a great proto-metroidvania like Rygar.

Another vote here for Clash At Demonhead. I actually beat that game all by myself as a kid. I don't remember it being terribly difficult but it definitely was cryptic as far as where to go and what to do.

I played Clash, you can run thru to the end and get stuck. Fun times. 1st time I ever did that in a game. Would also love a video.

the FAMICOM light gun and the KONAMI one were both modeled on the S&W revolver, and the NES lightgun can be Hacked to FAST fire , by using TWO hands, one to hold the barrel for AIM, and the 2nd hand to jiggle the trigger, to shoot FAST.

Thanks for taking a look at this game! I totally forgot about it! It would be really cool if you took a look at “Renegade”. I figured out how to beat it when I was a kid, but damn if that game doesn’t get convoluted at the end. I was thinking it might be endless until I figured it out

My younger brother Phil, and only Phil, is the ONLY person i know who beat this game back in the way day. Thing is, he was never into games like i am. But he did it. That Bourbon street fight was just brutal. A M rated, whimsical Bayou Billy remake needs to happen for the old timers.

This game was a challenge when I was a kid but I did finally beat it. Like double dragon, battletoads, and TMNT. Simons Quest was a challenge too, hardest Castlevania in my opinion.
