This Scott Burrell to Tate George was Grant Hill to Christian Laettner two yeas before that happened. UConn's Tate George hits a game-winner with time expired to help the Jim Calhoun-led UConn Huskies past the Clemson Tigers in this full 1990 Sweet 16 game in the NCAA tournament. Burrell threw the ball from the baseline with 1.0 seconds left to help lead UConn to the 71-70 win.

I remember this game so well. I was in the hospital recovering and was watching it on TV. When he hit the shot I was celebrating so loudly that the nurse had to tell me to quiet down.

One of the greatest shots in Uconn history. I was 12 and I’ll never forget that game and shot. Haven’t missed a Uconn game since.

That ending still produces a WOW! Just watched it! I remember exactly where I was when George hit that baseline shot 30 years ago! Where has the time gone! My senior year in HS at the time of that memorable game! That was Calhoun's third season! I've said it before many times and I'll reiterate it here! Jim Calhoun's rebuilding job at UConn has no peer! It hadn't up to 1990 and still doesn't now! It's the greatest in the history of college basketball what he did turning that program around!

I was 17 and had bought a little hand held TV just to watch the NCAA tornys while at breaks at work. I was able to catch the ending of that game and couldnt believe that shot. This was a very good Clemson team that had 2 NBA players, Elden Campbell and Dale Davis AKA as the twin towers. Great game

I'm from Connecticut and remember UConn's dream season. I have to admit, though, that I can freeze the video with 0:00 on the clock, and the ball hasn't quite left Tate George's hand.

It only matters when the horn sounds and a super slow motion replay clearly shows the ball was out of his hand before the horn sounded and I rooted for Clemson in this game 33 years ago.

And never sell short the jobs Calhoun and Auriemma did reviving both programs! The girls' were barely a blip when Geno arrived in '85-'86 and the job that Calhoun did with the men has no peer! Greatest rebuild in the history of college basketball

I've looked further into this and the rules say that the horn and red-light above the basket that go off at the end of the game are supposed to be synchronized, and are automatically set up. So there is no 'reaction time' by a 'horn operator'. The lighting up of the red light is the ultimate arbitrator (in case the horn doesn't go off for some reason). This system has been in operation for a long time, and in fact in the video you can clearly see the red light (a little ways behind the backboard, and not very bright) going off at the same time the horn sounds, with the ball several feet out of George's hand. So, end of conversation, and controversy! --CHS.
