BlackSeaRC presents a fully-detailed review, including open-water testing, of the brand new UDIRC UDI023PRO Inkfish 'jet-boat'. This is an unique ready-to-run (RTR) 14 inch (1:10 scale) radio-controlled (RC) simulated jet-drive (turbo-jet) personal watercraft (PWC). It is fitted with 'hobby-grade' electronics, including a brushless power system.
This video includes:
- Overview of packaging
- Unboxing
- Detailed look at all contents
- Possible inspiration for the Inkfish design
- BRP Sea-Doo RXT-X 300 Premium Triple Black 2023
- Dimensions and assessment of scale
- Inside the hull/components
- 'Jet-drive', 'jet-pump drive', 'jet-boat' and personal watercraft definition
- Cost to purchase
- Brushed variant (UDI023)
- Rider figure
- Functional testing, battery charging, power up, status lights, LED lights, steering and throttle
- Performance testing and demonstration of capabilities on the river
- Capsize and self-righting demonstration
- Water ingress check
- Post-test inspection
- Review summary with good points/bad points
Supplied as part of the RTR package are the watercraft, a 2.4GHz 4-channel fully-proportional RC transmitter, 7.4V 2000mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery pack with XT30 connector, USB battery balance charger, display stand, hex wrench tools, 2-pin mains adapter and operation guide booklet/warranty information.
All you will need are 4 off 'AAA' type batteries for the RC handset. I would also suggest to find a 6-7 inch articulating figure who can be used as a rider to ensure good scale realism. I found a great figure especially for this application. It is a 15cm super-flexible seamless body female figure with amazing scale realism to compliment the Inkfish. This figure is known as the TBLeague (Phicen) T04B and you can find out more in this dedicated video: • TBLeague (Phicen) T04B...
Product features of the UDI023PRO include V-shaped shallow draught (draft) ABS hull with protective rubber bump strip, quick-release upper deck with foam seal, servo-operated jet nozzle, 19mm diameter impeller, spray jet water outlet, water-cooling system, waterproof marine-grade 80A brushless ESC, waterproof 4-channel receiver with built-in gyroscope, self-righting, waterproof high-torque digital steering servo, 3500KV brushless motor, front and rear LED lighting (controllable from RC handset), 'one-click acceleration' button, throttle power adjustment (50/75/100%), low power alarm and out-of-range alarm.
Top speed is around 20kph and run-time quoted by the manufacturer is 7-8 minutes, although I was operating the Inkfish for 20-30 minutes during testing.
As well as the brushless-powered 'PRO' version, there is also a standard 'UDI023' brushed motor variant. This is around 30% cheaper and uses a water-cooled brushed motor and a 2-in-1 ESC/receiver.
The Inkfish is modelled on a typical 2-seater personal watercraft. A PWC is defined as follows:
'A Personal Water Craft (PWC) is a primarily recreational vessel that is designed to hold only a small number of occupants, who sit or stand on top of the craft, not within the craft as in a boat. A PWC is defined as being less than 12 feet (3.7 metres) long and there are sit down and stand up styles. Both types have an inboard power unit that drives a jet pump. Water is sucked up through the hull, an impellor forces it into a jet that is expelled from the rear of the machine to provide thrust. The nozzle can be directed side-to-side to enable steering'.

I have been tempted by a jet boat ever since I saw the ProBoat Jetstream. When you see most RC boat products, they do not offer good scale realism but the Jetstream is great in this respect. Unfortunately, it is close to 800 GBP by the time you have bought a battery and charger. This Inkfish on the other hand offers nice scale realism for around one tenth of the price! Of course, you need to have somewhere suitable to run a watercraft like this but I am lucky because there are several ideal places nearby. I might try it on the Black Sea on a calm day but for now the mountain rivers are perfect.

Wow I am blown away by your review. Thank you for responding and updating on Reddit. The level of realism reminds me of the FMS RC vehicles I’ve been considering that hold figures. I’m surprised that this comes with such a good brushless motor for such a low price. And water cooled! That is very interesting. All the RC cars from FMS up to $350 have brushed motors only. I was amazed how fast on it was on moving water and never capsized! When she hit the jump, landed and kept going that was my favorite part! 😂 She is better at riding it than me when my brother had a waverunner! This looks more fun that an RC car! I made sure to subscribe. With all the work you put into the video I hope the company sees and send you samples to review!

Thank you for your great comments and of course for supporting my channel. I always try to put some interesting details in my reviews and compare them with a real-life product where possible. I am a big fan of scale realism, whether it is RC vehicles, accessories or figures. Looking back at the footage, I was a little surprised how close I was manoeuvring to the rocks at the side of the river (I didn't think I was getting so close) but the Inkfish handles well and is very responsive to the controls. If you listen carefully, you can hear another moment when the craft goes out of shot at high speed and skims a rock. With a car, the natural reaction is to lift off the throttle when you hit trouble but with a jet-style boat, the steering relies on the water jet so it takes a bit of practice to keep the power on. The rock incident was not planned at all and I was lucky that the hull skimmed over the rock like it did and maintained control, right in front of the camera! You may also have spotted that when turning sharply and using full throttle, she was occasionally almost completely under the water but still managed to hold on and continue like a pro! With regard to RC car and trucks, I have quite a few different brands and vehicles ranging from 1:10 to 1:18 and 1:24, even 1:32. My ROC Hobby Katana was one of the earliest FMS Model products released and I still like it. The newer FMS products are even better now though. I am usually willing to sacrifice a bit of performance to get ultimate scale realism. I particularly like the hard bodies for the extra level of detail. Even at the top end of the price scale, I have a few Cross-RC and Gmade products that still use brushed motors. They perform perfectly adequately in my opinion. I would definitely buy another FMS crawler if there was another body design that appealed to me but I fancy something a bit faster that I can use on the beach, maybe another Losi product.

@@BlackSeaRC You’re probably the best person I’ve found the ask about realistic RC with figures. Most RC hobbyists tell me to just cut the legs off the figure lol. So I said to them “why don’t you just cut a hole in the floor of the truck?” 😂 Is it possible to buy a realistic RC that fits a variety of 1/12 figures? Any companies you’d recommend? You are the first person I find that is knowledgeable in both RC and figures! Here’s my backstory 😂 I preordered the Ramen Racer $250+50s. It’s not RC but fits four 1/12 or 1/10 figures inside! It’s 19 inches. To photograph my figures with. Then I realized for $300 I can buy a realistic RC! So I may sell it to get an RC. The only realistic RC company I found to actually have info and made to fit figures, was FMS. But their scaling is way off and selection limited. I was considering the FMS 1/12 Jimny but it only fits smaller 1/12 figures. The truck is about 12 inches. A lot smaller than the 19 inch Raman Racer. A youtuber had Star Wars Black Label Jyn Erso in hers. A tiny figure. Verykool Tricky Baby could fit in it. Reviewers say it’s really a 1/14 being marketed to 1/12. Next I looked at FMS 1/10 Land Cruiser hoping it could fit my figures better. KZfaq reviews show FMS 1/10 Land Cruiser actually being a 1/6 scale and fitting 12” figures i.e. 1/6. A youtuber compared the Jimny to the Land Cruiser and it’s huge! It’s actually twice the size! The reviewers say it is really 1/6 marketed to 1/10 people which is the main RC hobbyist market. That left me confused. I like your Mercedes Truck. That’s similar to what I’m looking for.

@@TheFutureLooksGrimm I certainly don't approve of cutting the legs off a figure because I also like to photograph them outside the vehicle, plus many figures are too nice to modify like this. You can also find that some RC cars with interiors look good from the outside but have limited space in the footwell area. Also, unless you have a good articulating figure, they can be hard to sit behind the wheel. In a real car, the driver sinks into the soft seat but in a RC car, the figure perches on top of a hard plastic seat. I also found that my TBLeague figures hold their poses very well but the Verycool figure doesn't bend at the waist as easily so is harder to sit. The subject of figures in RC vehicles is often complex as you've already discovered. Problems arise because many manufacturers are simply dishonest about the scale of their products. A good example of this is WPL. They made the E-1 tracked transport vehicle which is a replica of a real vehicle, the GT-SM/GAZ-71. The dimensions such as length, width and height are very easy to check because of the shape of the vehicle. WPL sell it as 1:16 scale so it should be fine for a 1:18 scale figure. But in reality, the scale is closer to 1:18.5 which is a big difference and a figure simply will not fit without modifications. When vehicles are based on real products, the scale should be more reliable but it isn't always the case. When a vehicle is the manufacturer's own design, scale can be even more random. So for example, my Gmade GOM Rock Buggy has a detailed interior with seat and steering wheel. I had everything planned and even bought a figure especially for this application. But when fitting the figure inside, it cannot even reach the steering wheel. The girl looks tiny in the seat. That is because the buggy is nearer 1:8 than the claimed 1:10 scale. Generally, a smaller figure works best so my Rastar 1:14 scale cars can use a 1:18 scale figure. The Rastar Hummer EV is 1:16 and a 1:18 scale figure looks a perfect size fit. Generally, I use 1:12 scale figures in 1:10 scale vehicles. One of my favourite and most successful recent purchases for scale realism was the SG-1205 SSV. It is a licensed replica of a CFMOTO side-by-side vehicle and is dimensionally accurate at 1:12 scale. The TBLeague figure fits totally realistically. With regard to truck type vehicles, scale-realism tends to be most associated with crawler type vehicles. Unfortunately, the combination of detailed hard bodies and interiors often comes at the upper end of the price scale. Cross-RC makes a couple of trucks with interior detail such as the Demon Series SG4/SP4 and the EMO XT4 but if you are looking for more of a road-legal type truck there isn't much choice at that price level.

I have been driving RC land vehicles for decades but this is my first experience of a product for use on water. I found the Inkfish to be great fun on the river and the performance exceeded my expectations, considering the price. The craft responded well to the controls and it didn't capsize, even in the strong current or during full throttle turns. I would definitely consider buying another jet-drive style product in the future as I have the ideal place to run such a craft.

Thank you, I put a lot of effort into this video to make sure it was as comprehensive as possible with lots of interesting details. The manufacturer doesn't recommend using this product in salt water but that is probably mainly due to the increased risk of corrosion. It is designed as an open-water craft so if the sea conditions were calm, I would use it there and then carefully rinse it with fresh water and dry it afterwards.

Yes, there have been lots of comments about this model being silly without a rider but I liked that because I had this figure in mind for mine. If it was an inbuilt figure, I suspect it would have been a very plastic look and the scale-realism would have been much worse. With this young lady, she even has a proper bikini! I think the components of this craft in general wouldn't like salt water but I suspect that if everything was washed down with fresh water afterwards it would be okay. I wasn't sure how my rider would like the water but she didn't object to getting wet.

@@SJ_Entertainment24 Thanks for the info. This does come as a surprise to me. A proper hobby grade watercraft should have more robust electronics than this. It is not as if UDI hasn't any previous experience with RC boats. Of course salt can speed up corrosion, but I wouldn't expect it to have such a quick impact on waterproof modules. Perhaps the electronics were faulty irrespective of whether they were being used in fresh or salt water? I must say that I have recently noticed my electronics glitching after use (in fresh water). The motor didn't react instantly to the throttle trigger (delay of several seconds) and the steering servo was glitching like crazy. I left everything to dry off and it seems fine again. It is rather concerning though.

@BlackSeaRC
@BlackSeaRC 2 ай бұрын
The specifications on the instructions and manufacturer's website all specify an input voltage of 7.4V and refer throughout to LiPo. So, although the battery supplied is strictly a 7.4V Li-ion pack, the ESC is 2S LiPo compatible. The standard set-up uses an XT30 connector and a compact battery pack due to space limitations. Charging time is around 230 minutes with the supplied 2000mAh battery and USB charger.

The specifications on the manufacturer's website specify an input voltage of 7.4V and don't mention anywhere that it is 11.1V capable. However, UDIRC does offer the UDI005 that is rated for 3S LiPo. In the images, the ESC looks similar but I can't be sure if it is exactly the same. The motor is definitely different though. If you were going to try, it would be at your own risk. I suppose you could upgrade the ESC if necessary. Additionally, the 3S battery supplied with the UDI005 would probably be too big, so you would need to find an 11.1V short pack due to space limitations.
