Alex Pereira has his sights set on becoming the first three-division UFC champ in promotional history. With UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones on the bench and interim UFC heavyweight champ Tom Aspinall looking for a fight, it makes sense for Pereira to face Aspinall
Alex Pereira’s explosive UFC 300 win over Jamahal Hill has left fans wanting more from ‘Poatan’. The Brazilian has made no secret of his desire for his next fight to be in his home country, with UFC 300 taking place in Brazil, as a heavyweight clash against Tom Aspinall would see him become the first fighter to hold titles across three weight classes. After his win at UFC 300, Pereira stood in the Octagon and with the light heavyweight belt draped over his shoulder, told UFC commentator Joe Rogan that he wanted a fight at heavyweight.
Following the fight, Aspinall posted an image of himself glaring at Pereira as the light heavyweight titleholder prepared to step into the Octagon at UFC 300.

This is some crazy recency bias. Holding so many belts while clearly being fastracked is cancer. He hasn’t made much title defenses for his belts and once he gets the HW belt he’d prolly call it quits. He needs to fight Ankalev, not Aspinall. Dominance is shown in title defenses not in the amount of belts. The best MIXED Martial arts fighter is one who’s well rounded and has no holes, not a specialist with holes. This is why Alex is fed opponents that primarily strike, and he was very lucky that Jamahal was dumb enough to stand up with him. Throw in a well-rounded fighter who knows when to just take the fight to the ground and Pereira will finally be tested in actual MMA standards.

One big thing to give Alex full credit for, he's not talking about moving up because there's a perceived weak champ in the division, you have JBJ who's still kind of a question mark at hw but definitely in contention for GOAT all around, then you have Tom who's shown no obvious weaknesses. Feels legit that Alex would want the shot no matter who he needed to fight

I think we suspect what will happen. J Blow Jones will jump at Pereira option rather than Tom to solidify legacy , so Jon can beat what he perceives as an easier option with less risk of facing a larger faster all rounder. Don't forget, Tom Aspinall leads the Record Book in the ufc statleader tables with four first positions from 32 tables across 4050 fighters. Tom is 1st for Shortest Fight time at 2 mins 10 needing only 134 strikes to gain 14 finishes. All Tom's wins are finishes, only one going to second round. Tom is 1st for best striking differential at 4.95 = he has taken less strikes per fight than anyone with a similar number of fights. Tom has least bottom position time and least bottom position % with 100% takedown success and 100% takedown defence. Tom is also 3rd for most strikes per minute and 4th for most knockdowns per minute. Joint second = are Oliveira, Jim Miller and GSP with three first positions each. Pereira has one entry in the tables with 4th for Sig Strike Accuracy at 62%. This is great BUT Tom would be 2nd to Overeem at 67% if he had met the 350 strike threshold. He may never reach it as he finishes fights in an average of less than 15 strikes. Sorry there is no comparison. Pereira has more decisions, takes more hits, has less KOs and finishes and more losses in the ufc than Tom. The record he and JBJ hold is they are backed by the ufc allowing them to fast track. In the case of PEreira, he was allowed to fight Izzy, lose to Izzya and then move up and fight for LHW and to avoid wrestlers and grapplers. However, he is not as protected as JBJ as UFC ignore his criminality, drug cheating and unwillingness to fight those who pose a serious threat. All but one opponent for JBJ in LHW were older and smaller, all had smaller wingspan. Gane had no grappling of takedown defence and no single punch knockout power.

Pereira vs Aspinall is a super fight!

I don't understand why they are all talking about Alex facing Aspinall when the Heavyweight champ is J. Jones and if the UFC still wants to make him versus Miocic for the next round before unifying the belt, I would rather see Pereira debuting in Heavyweight maybe against Gane in France( I consider that Alex has good chances in a fight like that), even though being a FN, defends the LHW against Ankalaev in the MSG card or the last card of the year, and if he beats Gane the UFC could easily in the first quarter of 2025 make J. Jones x A. Pereira instead of Miocic that it would one of the biggest fights of all time and the result would be Aspinall(considering he beats Blaydes) against Jones or Pereira, it's a win-win result for Tom. It's a idea that has a lot of ifs but if the UFC but if it happens it would be great.

We wouldn’t be having this discussion if not for one person’s injury. Also stop acting like they don’t weight cut 35 lbs to fight in the lower weight class.

@@ma-bx1oy thats pretty much the easiest fight jones can make rn, as he would just sub him just like he did to gane the aspinall fight is way more risky and arguably beats jones

I think it was Bruce Lee who said something like I don't fear the man who practices 1000 different kicks but the one who practices 1 kick 1000 times is the guy you fear. We've seen it with khabib, Izzy, Alex and even Ben askren when you have one skill set at a very high level if you are smart about how you fight then you'll do great things

I think Poatan would be mistaken if he moved to heavyweight. His natural weight is around 230 pounds whereas Aspinal is around 270

Pereira wouldn't have any problem making the weight for Aspinall for we weighed 232 lbs against Hill ! Couple that with his height and power? I agree with Cejudo and Usman....💪

Yeah? Who? Exactly. Khamzat, for instance, would destroy him, despite giving up 20-30lbs. Same with Nickal. Put Pereira against a high-level wrestler and Mmartist, that's smart enough to use it and not kickbox, and it's game over. Easy. ***Izzy out-wrestled him!*** Cornier said it too. "He has no grappling skills."

Well other than the first couple Alex Pereira fights, matchmaking had absolutely nothing to do with it, because he was either fighting champions, #1 contenders or defending the belt. If none of these guys were hardcore wrestlers, maybe that says something about the current evolutionary state of MMA.

Fedor fought most his career at 225(before every hw was pushing 260. Tim Silvia started that shit). Izzy fought in LHW weighing 200lbs. Couture, juiced to the gills, couldn't have been more than 215 when he won the HW belt.
