Dr. Okun talks with Katie Dagenais on the Vital Living Forum show about Parkinson's disease and many things patients need to know that should not be "secrets".
Thank you to Orange County Family Services for allowing us to post this episode!
The University of Florida Center for Movement Disorders & Neurorestoration is founded on the philosophy that integrated, interdisciplinary care is the most effective approach for patients with movement disorders and disorders involving a group of circuits in the brain called the basal ganglia. The Center delivers motor, cognitive and behavioral diagnoses as well as various treatments all in one centralized location. Care is coordinated and provided by leading specialists from many advanced medical and surgical services.

A study in New Zealand found that diet can help with non motor symptoms. It also helped with motor symptoms but the study couldnt be funded for long enough to confirm that. It can be found on KZfaq.

The importance of exercising is very true, in fact, it is about the only thing that actually works consistently, in my case it is running, it takes me some time to loosen everything but after a mile or so, I feel normal, I sometimes struggle to walk as my feet seem to weight a ton yet I can still complete a marathon in under 3 hours 30 minutes, go and figure....

Having diagnosed with PD two years ago, “happier life” is the key. Listen to yourself, take care of your loved ones, GET RID of toxic people immediately, no matter who they are. Exercise. Cooperate with your doctor. Take your time, you don’t have to please everyone. Keep a strict medication schedule. Focus on you. Thank you Dr. Okun!

hi John, I got diagnosed on April 4 and spent a solid week in shock. And anger and bewilderment. I have been spoiled by perfect health until this. I, like you, am trying to be "positive thinking" and am processing so much research and found that exercise does help alot. Journaling and spiritual readings, stress reduction, vitamin D and B, food and diet seem to be helping. I loved the video too, he seems amazingly compassionate. Three weeks in and getting better slowly and some days no tremors it seems.

I appreciate this Doctor so much! I am new with Parkinson's disease. I just called the PD Foundation and ordered the new Aware and Care kit that the doctor talked about.. It's free but have to pay an 8.00 shipping fee. It comes with lots of needed things such as an ID bracelet identifying that you have Parkinsons, sheets for the nurse, hospital etc, list of drugs not to give me! That's worth it all. I know I will purchase this doctors book now. He is worth the great help. Thank you.

I was diagnosed with PD in 2012. I am now 70 and while I have retired from work I have not quit working. I try to have something on my list every day that I need to do. If I don't get to it, I will reschedule it for the next day. I recently saw an interview with Linda Ronstadt, who also has Parkinson's and I thought that she said it best when she said that you don't die from Parkinson's. You die with it.

Parkinsons wears you down, if you let it. If you allow it too. We must continuously exercise. It’s the only thing that helps slow the symptoms progression, so you may get some relief. Attitude is also a major factor in your mental outlook. When you think healthy, you really have a better opportunity for living life as good as possible.

@@ritaperez6449 I completely understand bc I’m fighting the same battle. Last winter a bad gallbladder took my body weight down to 73 pounds before diagnosis, removed in September, and has taken until January to gain back up to 87. Had the flu last week of January, getting better but lost back down to 79 pounds. SO much harder to gain a pound than to lose weight. Living alone survival burns off more calories than I’m able to consume, although I don’t keep home as clean as I’d like, stay behind on laundry and order groceries delivered through InstaCart now. Medicare doesn’t cover for help & nobody in this area answers ads for such work. Cleaning and home health companies keep ads up trying to hire CNA’s and all are under staffed, so private help is impossible to hire is impossible to hire here. Did have home health after a couple surgeries, but they only took my stats, cared for my meds, and had a CNA assist with my shower twice a week. Used extra towels, which made more work for me, so I didn’t need her very long fortunately. You are VERY right about keeping a good state of mind, although Parkinson’s in a disease of the brain which disrupts our mobility more with time. Medication does help with the tremors fortunately. Our mind IS our best tool to fight it with is my experience, although they say each of us have different unique experiences. I’ve had too many to get into here, so wish everyone the best going forward. I keep insisting that I have Parkinson’s but Parkinson’s does not have me. Everything that is listed as known symptoms, I have tried to get ahead of, such as trying to stand up straight, sit up straight although my back aches and prefers to slouch forward. Much of that could be from my arthritis as well, because it took me out of work several years before Parkinson’s became an issue. Picking my feet up to put one foot in front of the other requires effort now, rather than to shuffle these short steps, but I keep trying. I really believe that even unseen internal tremors burn calories as exhausting as they are, although I appear to be at rest. Hopefully this information will be of help to someone, as I would like to help others any way possible. But the couple of research places I’ve contacted have only wanted funding from me. The APDF sent a box of books for someone newly diagnosed with PD, which doesn’t apply to me. It was only diagnosed a few years back, in 2019 if my memory serves me well, but it doesn’t LoL. Keeping a sense of humor helps too. I’ve had Parkinson’s mask quite awhile so need to stop joking, due to my facial expressions not changing. Combined with my dry humor I’m finding myself by myself. I sincerely forget I keep a poker face. I.E. Picking my meds Tuesday, a couple had to be refilled on Wednesday, by law, although my doc called them in trying to help me get everything done in one day bc I have the flu & wanted to come home & rest. Have used same pharmacy 20 years, so when he said I’m sorry, but these two I can’t fill until tomorrow, I said I’ve got the flu & didn’t want to come back out. Now, do you want me to get out of this car & kiss you on the mouth so you will understand in a few days? He said NO Ma’am! Of course I was joking, but forgot my face doesn’t change. But I think I’ve told those guys about the mask. Hopefully. I would NEVER deliberately hurt anyone, and they know this of me. I do forget that I always look serious now, so if your friends or loved ones have Parkinson’s, PLEASE be aware of this symptom. I’m not always serious and usually am not, especially if I say anything threatening! I love everyone. I simply need to adjust my personality to match my serious face perhaps. Be better if I get a mask? Idk. Thank you for your time.

My Neurologist told me (A month ago) that I may have Secondary Parkinson. He told me to stop taking Lithium , which I did for yrs , but I had stopped it months before that visit , for I hated it . I have my next visit next July, where he will tell whether I have it or not. My main problem is my speech. It feels like if the back of my tongue is "loose".

It is helpful to remember PD is a disease of the brain. Other systems are secondarily affected. Therefore, therapy should aim to - optimize blood and csf flow in and out of the cranium though exercise, posture, and cervical spine therapy - optimize nutrition for brain preservation - optimize mental and emotional stress mgt - optimize positive mental attitude, life meaning and purpose. - optimize love and rich relationships All of these preserve brain function

I encourage you to look into the new research into preserving neuronal functioning and reversing vascular inflammation. Daniel Amen and Dale Bredesen( his claims maybe too sensational) re: what encourages NGF Neuronal Growth Factor. mushroom extracts may sound woo-woo but the compounds in them are biologically active. nourishing mitochondria with 8 carbon MCT oils like EVO and refined coconut oils to provide more energy to the neurons slowing down. work with yr doctor on treating vascular inflammation which is at the root of atherosclerosis. stations are a double edge sword. Daniel Amen's BRIGHT MIND lifestyle changes, backed up by SPECT scans for other neurodegenerative disorders. dancing or walking to classical music activates alternate sides of the brain. PBS not long ago had a show on neurologic disease breakthroughs, and Parkinson's was one of the illnesses discussed. work on "leaky gut" and vitamin D to safest max, decrease toxic foods and maximize antioxidants within reason. I am looking into photobiomodulation and transcranial ultrasound for my patients instead of neurosurgery/DBS. all being said, Levo/carbidopa, bromocriptine, and others my neurologist colleagues use are still the gold standard. but using movement through thinking and planning out movements uses a different brain paths than those awry in PD.

Within 10 days of getting my Astra Zeneca Covid vaccination, I started with a tremor, dizziness, tiredness and lack of balance. Now they believe I have parkinson. I do have Parkinson Disease in our family (uncle and Grandmother) Could the vaccination have triggered it?
@glenliesegang8935
@glenliesegang8935 Жыл бұрын
absolutely. both Covid and the vaccine can cause neuronal and vascular inflammation. suppress it ASAP and research all you can about what boosts Neuronal Growth Factor. be sensible but look at those who think rationally but " outside the box" like Dale Bredesen and Daniel Amen's work on brain healing, because the brain is made of living cells which are capable of improvement in many cases. but don't break your bank account-do what makes sense. and counseling for the emotional roller-coaster of your emotions, and prayer and laying on hands cannot hurt.

You mentioned vegetables that contain natural nicotine, which, when eaten, has an alleviating or preventing effect on Parkinson's disease. Ptaah: 65. That is correct. 66. Pure vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and cauliflower, etc., which contain natural nicotine are effective against Parkinson's if eaten frequently. 67. A very effective extract can also be made from these vegetables, which can produce very beneficial effects.

Hi. Anyone know where I can get the Aware and Care kit in South Africa?
@FixelInstitute
@FixelInstitute 2 жыл бұрын
The kit itself is only shipped within the United States by the Parkinson Foundation. But all the documents that go into the kit are printable for free on their website: www.parkinson.org/Living-with-Parkinsons/Resources-and-Support/Hospital-Kit

We would need to see your husband to provide specific advice. We do have a clinic dedicated to atypical parkinsonisms like PSP. Our clinic phone number is 352-294-5400. Also you can get more information about PSP from the CurePSP foundation: www.psp.org/

why talk so much about medication and their sideeffects . Why no stress to what extend patients can live without ?

I don't know where this guy is coming from, but to say it's not that bad of a diagnosis is not true. Yes, there are people who can live 20-40 years with it, but what kind of quality of life. I have know two people that it didn't progress for 10 years, but that is unusual. I've had it three years. I'm in the 'very early stage' and yet it's already dramatically changed my life. Of course I choose to be positive every day, but that doesn't mean the symptoms aren't there and affecting me severely.

I agree with what you shared as what is hopeful about knowing there is no cure and being told that each time we see our neurologist - every 6 months! And yes it is true we do not die of PD -- as most PD sufferers die of pneumonia -- the old person's disease. PD slowly robs you of dignity and quality of like. 25 years of living with it and you can only fight it for so long before it tires you out. It is not a marathon but a mega-marathon. Positive attitude is needed but how many meds can a person take before the meds affect you too in a negative way.
