I bought a similar enclosure some years ago and after a while I found it failed for no apparent reason. The product you reviewd should be a newer design with USB C so perhaps it will be more robust. The plastic retainer begs to be lost or broken, so I hope a screw can be used in its place in case this happens

Thanks for comment. As a matter of fact, they provide a spare plastic retainer in the box that I did not notice as I was video taping. I hope those who gt one of these can put it somewhere they will not forget about (like me). I will pin this comment for others to read.

Hi Thanks for the video. Just a quick question, how does it handle heat since there is no heat gel to stick over!? This is something I am worried about and holding me on the fence!
@PE4Doers
@PE4Doers 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. YES, that is a problem, especially when doing a lot of writes (for example - when you are 'cloning' a drive). I make sure to leave the cover off and have it hang down over one of the case fans (blowing in or out). I actually found one of my spare 1tb M.2 drives to slow down to only about 15% of full-speed when it got too hot. The removed cover and fan hang-down brought it back up to about 85%.

I just re-tested mine with a similar M.2 NVMe on USB 3.1 (Gen2) and I obtained 983 on the first Read and 923 on the first Write tests (which would have a maximum of 900 to 1000 on that level of USB). Are you sure yours in NVMe not SATA? Also, could your be overheated? They are VERY sensitive to heat and unfortunately this adapter does not include a heatsink.

@PE4Doers
@PE4Doers Ай бұрын
You are absolutely right. M.2 SSD drives get HOT. and the hotter they get the slower they run. This unit does not dissipate the heat well, but others I have reviewed SO keep the M.2 relatively cool (well at least just warm). This unit is meant to do small file copies, not copying Terabytes of data.

It automatically detected and showed the drive in File Explorer. Was it already formatted or something? Mine is detected by the USB but doesn't show up in File Explorer on Windows 10. When an unformated drive was plugged into a USB port back in the olden days, a message popped up asking whether or not you wanted to format the drive. I guess they changed that, because they like to make things more and more difficult the more advanced we get.
@PE4Doers
@PE4Doers Жыл бұрын
In my case it may have already been formatted. I have seen it ask to format if I look at at a freshly initialized drive (Using DISKPART). Maybe I should make another video about that and show how DISKPART worked and when you should consider using it.

@@PE4Doers, I discovered an app called “Disk Management”. It’s quite handy. You should make a video about it. It found the USB drive instantly, and did everything I needed. It’s pretty easy to use, but extremely difficult to find. I had to click “Windows->X” to get to it, and I had to log in as administrator to run it. Maybe you should figure out how to run it as administrator from another account. I rarely use the administrator account because I don’t want my web browser to have the ability to screw up my computer.

Sorry to hear that. Are you using USB-C connected to a 3.2 port? The only issue Ive had is it lack of true heat dissipation for large data transfers (i.e. a full system 'cloning'), which I mostly solved by leaving the cover off and hanging it across one of the case fans. I am now looking to buy one that includes a better cooling solution.

@@PE4Doers in my case it disconnects automatically as if i pulled the power usb cable from the back of the cpu, type c. I was starting to think it was my motherboard, but that didn't happen when I connected my phone to charge using the same cable

@@gsswmr The chip in the unit controls whether it connects or not, so without directly testing it myself, I would take the educated guess that it is simply overheating. Try running it with the unit case off and a fan blowing directly on it.
