In this video we wrap up this build with exterior painting, decals, weapons install, light weathering, and the final reveal of our Revell UH-1D Huey Gunship model kit in 1/32 Scale.
This kit was first released in 1967 with new tooling in 1969. This version is the 2015 release with new decals added.
The UH-1 Iroquois was first ordered by the US Military in 1952 and saw extensive use in Vietnam. It enjoyed a very long service in many militaries around the world and some are still in use today.
I hope you enjoy this video.

Nice build, well done! I used some of your techniques myself on this build. I wanted to offer some advice back. I noticed your windows above the pilot are not tinted green. Here is what you can do, get CLEAR decal paper, print two 1 x 1 dark green squares, and then seal it with a high gloss clear coat, not a matte coat. When it dries and you slip the decal off the background, you will have a perfect little piece of green window tint that is translucid just as it should be. It even has its own adhesive on the back. Apply the decal to the inside of the window to protect it, trim the edges and/or apply your regular window clear coat if you use one. Luckily on this build the curve in the windows is so slight there is no need to worry about warping the decal.

I am new to modeling (don't even have any tools with the exception of an xacto knife and cutting mat) and I picked up this kit. I quickly realized this might not be the best kit to try and work on for a first timer. Whenever I get around to this one I hope my Huey comes out a fraction as good as yours! The decals, and Olive Green you have the this huey is perfect. I've grown up seeing these as my dad worked on them and your model is truly awesome. Cheers

Thank you so much for giving my little build a look! You don't need a lot to get started in modeling, but your right about this kit! To get it up to "modern standards" of modeling it requires you to put in a lot more effort. But remember, when you start out in a new hobby, just please yourself, like all hobbies, we learn by doing, take it slow, enjoy the process, progress at your own speed. Before you know it, you'll be challenging yourself with each build! Remember to have fun doing it and you're on your way!! 😉The best advice I could ever give anyone is don't judge yourself and your abilities by what you see others doing. Concentrate on what you want to achieve and achieve it. Thanks so much for watching and good luck on all your builds, model on my friend! Johnny

Thank you so much for doing this series, that huey is really well done!!! I just purchased the rubicon model huey. And I will be using most of your techniques that you did here. I was making a shopping list of colors I need to get as you were building this.😁 I do have a couple of questions. 1. While I am familiar and have used an airbrush in the past, whats a good PSI to start at? 2. That Sprue goo you made. Is it essential the extra material from the model kits that you just put into the glue and let dissolve? I appreciate your time and I will be checking out your other videos.
@hillbillymodeling
@hillbillymodeling Ай бұрын
Hi Joseph, thanks so much for watching. Airbrushing is variable depending on the thickness of your paint and the size of the tip on your particular airbrush. With that said, in general you can safely use 8 - 12 psi without any issues. Higher psi for thick paints and the lower psi for thinner paints. Sprue goo is really useful, and since it's polystyrene plastic just like the model it makes for a wonderful filler. To make it I use Tamiya Extra Thin cement and the left-over sprue from any kit will do. just add small cut pieces to the bottle and let them dissolve. Since Tamiya Extra Thin is a solvent, it will turn the sprue pieces into that wonderful sprue goo. Just add more sprue to make it thicker and more extra thin if it gets too thick. Thanks for your kind comments and good luck with your build! Johnny

Great Job! My only concern is that the Huey helicopter used in Vietnam NEVER USED this weapon system by US ARMY. Rockets launchers and miniguns or machine guns always installed back, Closer to the End of the cabin, under the door gunner seats. If you try to Find Pictures in internet You can find weapon systems like this model, only in RAAF ARMY helicopters, main of them with camo paint brown and green and not about the Vietnam era.

Hi and thanks for watching. Yes, you are right about there never being a gunship in the D and H versions for the US. I think there may have been an M version as well that was a gunship, but not sure. Great work and an inspiration for my future build. I just picked up this kit for a very reasonable price. Yes it has flaws. Yes it may not be 100% accurate. But if you are not a rivet counter and you enjoy building, I can see this being a decent project. I will definitely be referring to this series. Question, did you devise a plan to address the door gaps. Just curious what you would have done. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Hi Todd, thanks so much for the compliment of using my build as a reference, I really appreciate it my friend. As for the door gaps, I'm guessing your talking about the pilot and co-pilot doors, it can be a little risky, but just apply a little heat from a hairdryer and bend the top of the door in to match the fuselage profile. As far as the gaps around the doors go, I just left them alone. Also, I got the running light color wrong for the green, I used blue, but it should be green on the right side! Happy New Year!!!! @hillbillymodeling
@hillbillymodeling Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, great question! I use Vallejo Airbrush Thinner 71.161 to thin the water-based craft paints. Technically you can use tap water to thin the paint, but I haven't tried it myself. I also recommend straining the paint either before or when adding it to your airbrush. I have found there can be some pigment particles in craft paint that are larger and less uniform that might cause stoppage issues in my Neo airbrush. Thanks for commenting and watching my friend! Take care and model on. Johnny

The why mostly comes with experience. Like he says he prefers a certain way of shading by priming all in black and then infilling panels with color. He says you can do it other ways, too, but he shows you his preference because he is comfortable with it. So he does say why many times throughout the series. For example, he opened up the screens to not only make it more realistic, but to allow light to pass through the engine area. He also explains why he uses metal tubing and aluminum foil. He could have simply used styrene in making the seating but he explained that the metal tube is more stable and the foil is easier to replicate wear from sitting. He explained the why of adding shims under the elevators to prevent sagging. I could go on, but you get the point I hope. You might want to review some of the sections that are confusing to you.
