"This Huey will try to kill you." I was a former UH-1 crew chief during the Desert Storm war and was lucky enough to have pilots who felt it wise to ensure the crew chiefs could handle basic flight if an emergency arose. You aren't kidding, keeping this thing from killing you is a trick when you're learning.

Fun fact: if you increase the throttle before engaging the starter you initiate something called "hotstart". This could damage the engine IRL and this is why you see fire coming from the exhaust. The best way is to watch the engine RPM. If it reaches 15% and the main rotor is spinning then apply the throttle.

If you are interested, the ship you landed on is an Oliver Hazard Perry class guided missile frigate. When you landed, the ship was not configured for flying operations, the rails around the flight deck and should be laid outboard to form a safety net and the 4 big whip antennas up on 02 deck should have also been laid outboard. The hut down on the deck to starboard is for the person controlling the RAST system that pulls the Seahawks down on deck in rough weather and catches a stubby pole in the under-body in a big clamp. You can see the track that the two clamps run on leading back to the port and starboard hangers, used to drag the helo in after shutdown and the tail and rotor are folded. The windowed area in the rear end of the superstructure is the flight controller. There should be an artificial horizon above that hut and below the CIWS. To starboard you can see the three traffic lights (vertical circles)that indicate to the pilot if the deck is open, flashing green for good to go, red for give it a miss and yellow for hang about, we're not quite ready yet. You can also see the comms cable for the marshal coiled on bulkhead between the hangars. Pretty good model for a flight sim.

Hi Bob, they are not really hard. However, the concept of flying a real helicopter in simulator is . . different. The concepts are pretty alien and much different to what you imagine.

The ATC wasn't mistaken clearing you to land on runway 07. You approach the runway and fly along it in a low hover to the taxiway and then follow the taxiway in a low hover to your parking area. It's the same for take-off. Taxi in a low hover along the taxiway to the runway and only then once facing into wind fly away.

All_Roads all real world airports require rotary aircraft to enter the traffic pattern and perform a touch down on the runway. The comment above is correct. The only time you wouldn't is if there is a specific helipad away from the main airport.

Fun fact - we used to do something similar on our S62 Seaking simulator at RAF Valley. As part of our daily morning readiness tests, we would take off from the pad at the former Search And Rescue Training Facility and fly over Cymyran beach. Just off shore, we had a carrier and a frigate. To test the flight controls and instrumentation, we would land on the carrier, then fly parallel to the frigate and land. Oh and we had a timed scoreboard, so the clock stopped when you landed in the center of the H outside the SAR building (you could hear the weight on wheels switch clunk). Sadly SAR was privatised and the Seaking simulator was decommissioned for scrap.

I rode in the side door seat of one of these things 45 years ago. I still still remembered some crews who loved to do 70 or 80 degree banks. I always wondered if they were either high or legally insane, but that wasn't really a big deal back then, certainly not for us in the back of the chopper.

Fun Fact: The helicopter landing area on naval ships is called a Flight Deck. IRL the railings would have been down and they act as a safety net in case someone falls off the deck. After helicopters land, a crew runs out the them to put chocks on the wheels and chain it to the deck so it cannot move until it is ready to take off again.

Hi Paul, thanks a lot for going DCS ... I completely enjoyed this video. It's a great aid that you chose to show the window with all the flying controls position ... very few DCS youtubers do that and it really helps to understand what you are doing to control the craft at each given instant. In my opinion it is not necessary for you to create a Tutorial, there are already plenty of those on YT .. I prefer to listen you talk about the game experience while I see you fly unusual scenarios or missions :) Best regards, and thanks again for sticking with KZfaq .. .not all of us enjoy twitch. Cheers.

Also, just to clarify squirrel, when you loose lift and drop on landing it has nothing to do with altitude or ground effect, ground effect is that cushion of air you were talking about, that drop is due to loss of what is know as translational lift, what that means is that above a certain speed (about 40kts in the huey if memory serves) the rotor disk acts as a wing surface and behaves like the wing of a fixed wing aircraft, which is where most of your lift in forward flight comes from, once you slow down below your effective translational lift threshold (that magic 40kts mark) the amount of translational lift becomes negligible and you are back to relying on the lift from the blades themselves, hence if you don't adjust collective you drop. The best way to counter this is to gradually increase collective as you slow, with practice you should be able to have the collective reach it's hover position at the same time your forward airspeed drops below the 40kt mark. Good luck :)

Helicopters often approach on runway headings, and will actually land if equipped with wheels, or hover over the numbers and hovertaxi to their parking. This is to keep incoming aircraft organized so those on approach are approaching from a controlled direction. It's not absolutely required, however it is safer than having a direct ramp approach or departure.

Squirrel! I know what you're looking for, you're looking for a challenge! The DCS MiG-21bis is apparently the hardest aircraft to take-off and land with. You simply have to try it! I have it personally and just the take-off is an adventure in itself, for landing you have to have your fuel tank almost empty to manage it, it's not impossible to fly but it sure is a challenge. You'll definitively love it.

IFF is "Identify Friend or Foe" It's what keeps your own guys from shooting you. Even though you are in a helicopter, when landing at an airport you still need to "hover land" on the runway you are told. While you never touch the runway itself you would essentially fly down it at an altitude of about 10 feet until you reach the taxiway instructed and then you would hover taxi down it to your parking space where you would finally touch down. Airports don't allow helicopters to just fly in and land whereever they feel like. They do this to prevent collisions. Heliports are different. Airports typically have specific patterns for helicopters though.

@MrZombie999
@MrZombie999 3 жыл бұрын
Guessing you know by now but if not the IFF is Identification, friend or foe (IFF) is a radar-based identification system designed for command and control. It uses a transponder that listens for an interrogation signal and then sends a response that identifies the broadcaster. It enables military and civilian air traffic control interrogation systems to identify aircraft, vehicles or forces as friendly and to determine their bearing and range from the interrogator. IFF may be used by both military and civilian aircraft. IFF was first developed during World War II, with the arrival of radar, and several friendly fire incidents.

While your landing on the friggin frigate quit friggin oscilating like that to bleed off speed. All you need to do is set up a sight picture to the boat, control your speed with the collective and cyclic and fly that path to the boat. When you get to the boat, you are landing just like you do on land. Need to be eye level with the Phalanx, stablelize your hover and then lower the collective and land on the deck. Dont get yourself into an unstablized PIO.!!!! Just a couple tips. Cheers

Not only can you watch the replay, you can watch the replay of your flight and take control of the helicopter at any point during the replay. So basically, if you see something in the replay you think should have been done differently, or you could have done better, you can take control at that point and practice the correction then and there without having to load another mission and try to recreate the situation to do it. That's pretty cool! P.S. In the upper Left corner of the pedestal is the IFF/Transponder Control Panel. There's 2 rotary type switches there with 2 circuit breakers labeled Reply and Test. The rotary knob on the right, set it to STDB to turn it off.

Two mechanical world sounds I love: 1. The A-10 engines in a banking climb; you hear the literally musical phase shift as the load to one engine increases, and 2. the THUMP of a Huey's rotors from a distance...... they can be miles away and rattle window panes :) The opening scene of Apocalypse Now, under Jim Morrison's "This is the end.......... we're all insane........", for example. The Huey in Vietnam must have been like the A-10 in terms of the sound you're quite happy to hear approaching........ think you could do a session on how to generate maximum thump from those blades? The sounds embedded are awesome as it is, and I do occasionally get that thumping in a steep bank. No small challenge to take off in this beast...... it's quite easier to land it.

The cushion is called ground effect. The loss of lift is from translational lift. Your forward airspeed isn't high enough to assist the rotor in creating lift so as you leave ground effect your altitude will drop. Try getting some speed before gaining altitude.

I bought the simulator about 3 years ago. The fact is, if you can master this you can fly the real craft. However, I was determined to never use the auto start and always go from cold start. Fyi this games current limitation is lack of high detail modules not enough players and as a result only 6 official third partys and last but not least this onlt effects modern modules classifed sysrems. Fyi there is a version of the game used by militarys in training called the battle simulator where classifed stuff is allowed.

Nice to see you going to the DCS :-) One note though, you've misled the Ground Effect and the Translational Lift. The latter is when you transition from the Hover to the Forward speed or the other way around (around 25-35 knots). They are two separate things. Ground effect will actually allow you to lower the collective when going closer to the ground (in hover). Translational lift will require you to increase the collective when slowing down. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Translational_lift
