I gotta drop this comment, because among all the people who gave their reactions to this episode, you guys have been the best at being insightful about Roxy and this world's rules and cultures. I love that you understood best what Roxy has been going through (despite the episode missing crucial details from the LN!), you still respected her and made sense of her actions and feelings, you understood that Rudeus is a fragile person unlike what people perceived him as a strong individual (you caught on that 100%), and best of all you guys never lingered on or made issues on the ethics and rules of this world on mono/polygamy! This is a different world, with different sensibilities and cultures. We as the audience don't need to insert our real-world sensibilities nor do we have to fully agree on it just because we like the series, we just have to enjoy the series at it unfolds. Adding some tidbit though, I believe the demon and beast races are used to the concept of concubines and multiple partners, thus you can see how Roxy didn't react negatively to being proposed by Rudeus (while already having Sylphy).

Rudy the one handed dual wielder

The Anime doesnt convey this, but Roxy pretty much saved rudies life. He was hold up in his room for a many many days, (i think it was a few weeks), not eating, barely drinking. He was withering away, replaying that moment of his pauls death over and over again. No one could get him to do anything no matter how much they tried. Finally one day Geese brings up that when men are like this, sex can bring them out of it, they all agreed but since sylphie wasnt there and they didnt think rudy would feel good about sleeping with a random person in a brothel, they tried to get Enelise to sleep with him but she refused since hes married to her granddaughter. They kept pleading with her to do it to save rudy. They even suggested that Lilia do it, but that got shot down right away. Roxy after much thought decided that if it would save rudy then she would do it. (Also she wasnt aggressive about it like the anime portrays it.) Also Enelise lies at the bonfire and tells rudy that since him and roxy slept together almost 2 months ago, roxy hasnt had her period. Thats the focal point of all this and its what really pushes rudy to try to make roxy his wife. He really didnt want to betray sylphie, and wasnt going to marry roxy. But if she was going to give birth to his child then he was going to take responsibility for it. Anyways, i just wish the anime went deeper into both of these things cuz it kinda seemed like she forced herself onto him for almost no reason, and he wants to marry roxy purely out of selfishness.

Lilia’s think is very rigid. She even raised Aisha not as a normal daughter to live a normal life, but to become Rudy’s future maid and potential concubine. Lilia’s actually kinda messed up in the head for that and it resulted in Aisha turning into a heavy bro-con who refuses to even think of herself as just Rudy’s sister. Lilia practically stole Zenith’s man so she feel like she not only owes her to take care of her, but also owes Rudy to help take the load off of him. She has ever actually referred to herself as Paul’s wife.

Okay I just fully watched this. How is Madison cooking this hard? Without light novel context, I would've thought that it'd be so difficult to uncover a lot of these nuances. Man, that's a lot of emotional intelligence

This is just some context for what Roxy did and why she did the anime left out a lot of important things Rudy was on the brink of death he didn't eat for weeks he was basically a skeleton they also skipped over a part when Roxy elanise talhand and geese went to a bar to discussed how to save Rudy bc he was going to die elanise said to take him to a brothel bc that's what usually helps a men get in better spirits she also said she would sleep with him but cliff wouldn't like that so they basically told Roxy she had to do it bc he loves her and if she don't he was going to die she didn't want to do it at first but they convinced him so they gave her a ultimatum they also skipped the fact that Rudy told Roxy the story of his life before he was decimated and how he made mistakes so Roxy found out that he was reincarnated they really destroyed this episode compared to the source material making Roxy looks bad

With a lot of the context cut this felt like a character assassination on Roxy. I'm biased as a Roxy fan, but damn they did her dirty.

In the novel the reason Rudy chose to marry Roxy was because Elinalize lied to him that she was pregnant and for him to take responsability for that

Light novel readership saying the messed up the adaptation but y’all seem to have understood the main points of the episode the anime just skipped tones of Rudy depression and some stuff that elinalise dose to make Rudy marry Roxy others then that as a novel reader myself I thought the episode was great

They skipped a TON in this episode. Yeah, there were a TON of extenuating circumstances. Elinalise kinda suggested sleeping with Rudy as a solution, but said that he was one of the very few men that was off-limits to her. Roxy was there as they debated it, so it's implied that Elinalise wanted Roxy to take matters into her own hands. Because yeah, Rudy was wasting away and his life was in danger. (I disagree with Elinalise's solution, but she's Elinalise). Also... Roxy's comment about how Rudy should focus on the familiy in front of him. This was after Rudy told her about being reborn into this world, albeit "fictionalized." He was asking "what should this person do?" and she asked a few pointed questions about the situation. Roxy's a smart girl. If she doesn't suspect what happened to Rudy by now, she will after she meets Nanahoshi. (It never really comes up in the LNs). There was also the bit about Elinalise lying to Rudy that night and telling him that Roxy hasn't had her "monthly visitor" during their journey. Pushing Rudy into it. But she also explains why... she knows Roxy well enough to know what Roxy will do after stepping aside, and believes it will not end well for Roxy. So... bad stuff for a good reason? Is any of this justification? I don't really think so, but as Corbin said, it's something to be entered into the record prior to sentencing... :)

Fortunately, the entire source material has finished, at least for Rudy's story. So you won't have to worry about content dropping off because they got ahead of the books, like what happened to Game of Thrones. There are a number of Turning Points left, and each one hits below the belt in their own way. You've seen three of them now, so you have an understanding of just how significant the term 'turning point' is to this author. So when you see 'Turning Point 4', you'll know ahead of time that the episode is going to hit hard. We do have another episode, so there's still time for plenty of communication between Rudy, Sylphie, and Roxy to happen. Which is good. Communication is key in any relationship, and it gets exponentially more important the more people end up in said relationship. But let's be honest here, Sylphie *knows* Rudy, and probably understood that if Roxy ever became an option, Rudy would not be able to hold back. She saw, as Fitz, Rudy literally worshiping Roxy's panties, and was involved with what Rudy did to the two beastkin girls that broke the statue of her. Because you can't 'fix' someone, you can't 'change' someone. And Sylphie knows better than to try. So this conversation will probably be 'more in exasperation than in anger'. If anyone is going to be truly upset, it's going to be Norn, for not saving her father like Rudy promised. And Norn is more of a Millis follower than the rest of the family, like her mother, so she probably wouldn't approve of the arrangement either. For that matter, his bro Cliff is a Millis worshiper to the core, and might see this as a betrayal of Rudy's vow to Sylphie (which, let's be honest here, it is). So even if the three come to an agreement and understanding, there's still likely to be friction.

Now go watched a skipped content and see the group basically nonchalantly convinces Roxy to sleep with Rudy and the next morning Rudy told Roxy a story of a reincarnated man and Roxy figured out it was Rudy.

Can't wait for next episode, and here's to hoping we get an announcement for season 3 a bit quicker this time.

What I like about this series is that even though a very dramatic event happens that could easily spark controversy, no matter how anyone feels about what happened, there's SO MUCH to talk about. So much nuance to pick through. How many harem anime out there put this much detail into the relationships?

It’s interesting seeing the reaction between two people with very different emotional intelligence reacting to the same thing. (That’s not an insult to your man, just something that’s on display in this episode) Definitely one of my favorite reactions to this episode.

That one line Roxy gives Rudeus has to be the single most moving and impactful in the entire 26-volume run of the novels (this episode being in the 12th). "Please look to the future. Everyone is waiting for you." When one contemplates on it, it isn't only about those you know and are connected to now waiting for your connection again, but also those you think have drifted away and all those you have yet to meet. Rudeus has his family and friends in Sharia waiting for him, Eris is still out there, Ariel and Luke look up to him, and all the myriad people he will meet in his life going forward. He is still only 16 when he hears that line, so he has at max about a century left in him if all goes well.

There were no other options. Rudy refused to do anything for days not even eating. No way in hell he’s playing scrabble or making figurines lol. Roxy saved his life even if it was partly for selfish reasons.

Norn better appreciate that if it weren't because of her, Rudy would've remained in Ranoa happily married to (only) Sylphie, with still both of his hands, and joyously preparing for the birth of first child instead of going through depression. She's got no pedestal to stand on and judge.

Light novel readers are fuming that the anime turned Roxy into a rapist (WHICH IS NOT PART OF HER FLAWS) and literally cut the FOCUS of the chapter: Rudeus' grief. They cut a long monologue of Rudeus processing his emotions. Also, the Roxy part was supposed to be framed like a mistake. It wasn't supposed to be rape but both of them trying to save the other in a twisted way. Consent. This accidentmeans that he needs to tell his family that his father is dead, his arm is gone, his mother is mentally gone, and, oh yeah, look, another wife. That's literally the tension after this and idk what they'd do with it now. It is, by far, the worst adaptation of the series. The author also warned us readers in twitter beforehand that he was pressured to agree to do it like this. Studio Bind fucked up

Pre-Qualified vs. Pre-Approved... LOL! Yeah. Sylphie's had some extremely interesting life experiences, so her perception of "normal" is probably a bit skewed. She spent a lot of time with Rudy's family, so the Paul / Zenith / Lilia dynamic was pretty "normal" in her eyes. And then... since she was ten years old, she's been around Asuran nobility. Half that time back at the capital. You've caught a glimpse of Asuran nobles' & royals' proclivities. Stuff that probably woulda turned Sylphie's hair white if it hadn't changed already. So as sweet and innocent as she seems, she's a bit jaded, too.

Thank you so much for another wonderful reaction. It is not a stretch to say it really brightened my day. Although I really enjoyed this episode, as a LN reader, I felt disappointed by how much context, setup, and important dialogue was cut. Especially since quite a few other channels are confused by what happened in this episode. Particularly disheartening is how many people are absolutely vilifying Roxy. So I really appreciate how much you two try to analyze and understand the characters and story. Can't wait to see your take on the finale! As an aside, some commentators are being rather unfair to Elinalise. In the light novel, she did not lie to Rudy about Roxy being pregnant: "When we drank together in Bazaar, Roxy told me that her monthly visitor still hadn't come." "Huh?" Monthly visitor...? Oh, wait! I knew what that was. Uh, but...did that mean...? "Well, it's not for certain yet," she added. We'd done the deed. It was possible. Plus, the night they'd gotten drunk, she had come and beaten on my chest (albeit weakly). Maybe that had been a sign? Elinalise peered into my face and said, " Rudeus, if Roxy really is pregnant with your child, what will you do?" -Vol 12, p 289 She just implied that it was a possibility in order to break through the final bit of resistance due to the mores of Rudy's previous life. Thanks to that, he could finally be honest with himself. It is also worth mentioning that the promise of monogamy was made by Rudy unilaterally. Though it made Sylphie happy, it was not something she had asked for.
