This massive machine is capable of drilling tunnels in any, even the hardest rock structure. TBM, which stands for Tunnel Boring Machine, is an advanced machine used for excavating large tunnels in various construction projects. It consists of a cutting head, a guiding machine, and a debris removal system. TBM is employed in places where traditional tunneling methods are inconvenient or hazardous, offering greater efficiency and safety. TBMs can vary in size and weight depending on the specific model and project requirements. Typically, these machines can weigh from tens to hundreds of tons, and their length can range from several to several dozen meters. They are usually designed and built to meet the specific requirements of each tunneling project.

No, they do not. There isn't and probably won't be massive TBM's using lasers as the "cutter". It would take ridiculous amounts of energy to vaporize that much rock.

@@bokoblinlogic1619 which is just not happening in any meaningfully sized tunnels. It's far too expensive and stupid. Where do you think all of that melted / vaporized rock is going to go? Yes, it will flow directly at the expensive laser drill and fry it, covering it in solidified lava.

@PAcifisti

@@bokoblinlogic1619 You just checked? Then name the machine. That makes even less sense btw, using gas to melt the rock? Why on earth would you ever do that? You won't be ever able to solve that "minor" issue that vaporizing / melting the rock makes it nigh impossible to recover and route it out. Not that you would even need to, modern TBM's line the tunnel walls with concrete (which is the "smooth" surface you see in tunnel falls) and do it pretty efficiently. Melting the rock would just be an insane and pointless energy expenditure.

Here's some more important FACTS this clip didn't tell you.. "Some boring machines are nuclear. In the 1970s, US government researchers considered using a nuclear-powered tunneling machine to dig through rock. The machine would travel through the Earth's upper mantle like a submarine moves through water. The Los Alamos National Laboratories patented a nuclear tunnel boring machine in 1972, claiming it could reach depths of 18+ miles."
