UK Automatic Driving Test Replica 2024 (full route without Sat-Nav)

The U.K. Practical Driving Test includes 20 minutes of independent driving, and 4 out of 5 tests will use a sat-nav for this part of the test. The remaining 1 in 5 will follow road signs for the independent drive section - so that’s what this video will show. We will be using a full electric car with an automatic gearbox, and the test route will include a manoeuvre and everything a real examiner would say.

At 6:26 min when he asked you to take the next road on the left, I would’ve made the mistake of turning left at the junction. Would that be a fail in the actual exam? And if the instructor actually wanted me to turn left at the junction on that road what would he/she actually say? My test is on 05/04!!!!!!

There is are no faults for taking a wrong turn, if driven safely. I expect an examiner would ask us to take another left turn to go into that road. Good luck on your test!

I have never had a driving test before and I have been wanting to drive for ages. I will be choosing automatic because I think I would struggle to much with gears and it looks so much easier in automatic. I have started watching your videos for help and I also live in Bury St Edmunds!! :)

I'm learning in a auto too. My test is in a month. I do apply the handbrake but leave the transmission on Drive during traffic, but I sometimes creep or the gearbox struggles so I put the transmission on neutral and apply the handbrake and it stops the gearbox from struggling.

Someone said this was flawless ? Indicating to pullover on the left prior to passing a left turn/large driveway. And then, overtaking bus with oncoming vehicles forcing the oncoming car to swerve into layby. Flawless indeed 😜

When indicating to pull over, we would only delay our signal for a proper road or large business entrance. If we worried about driveways we would almost never signal at all! It was a very wide road where Ann passed the bus, with plenty of room to pass. We would probably have given a driving fault for being hesitant if she hadn't driven on...

My test is on Monday this video is really very helpful as I am also learning an automatic car driving.At 22:40 she did not give the signal for forward bay parking. And may be I am wrong I feel she is looking more in the left mirror not in the right that much.

We’re glad you like the video. Using the indicators is optional on manoeuvres, so if you see there is no-one nearby there is no need to use them. Looking all around (through the windows) for danger is most important, and just use whatever mirrors are useful. Good luck on Monday 🚗👍🏼

Thanks for these videos. When at a traffic stop, driving an automatic, do you need to put the gear in park and lift the handbrakes, like you would in a manual? And when going straight at a roundabout, do you indicate when entering the roundabout or only left when exiting the roundabout?

Fingers crossed - a quick question about the video! Did she bump the curb at 13:54 when pulling over to the left? would that not be a serious/major fail?

I think it was a pothole that made the car wobble like that. If you should lightly touch the kerb on your test it would usually be a minor fault - but a hard whack into the kerb could be marked as a serious fault. There is no need to risk getting super close to a kerb, stopping 15-30cm should be close enough.

The speed to drive at depends on the traffic flow, hazard level and the limit. Go faster when the road is safe, but slower when it’s not. Good luck!

Thanks a lot for your videos. All of them have been spot on and super helpful. ❤️ Being more comfortable with sat nav makes this follow the signs independent driving more difficult for me 😔. What if we continuously make wrong turns or exits (and safely doing it)? Will those bemarked as minor faults? And doing three of those driving faults(the wrong turns) will automatically result in a test failure?

I am taking the test with automatic, do i need to use the handbrake at all when stopping in traffic or pulling up on the left or is using the parking brake sufficient? Up to now i am comfortable using just the parking brake, is this alright? I have test soon so thankful for any replies!!

We would only use the handbrake when parking at the side of the road, but others like to use it sometimes when stopped in traffic. There are no rules, except that the car must be in full control at all times. Good luck!

This video is only a replica of a test - not a real one, as we're not allowed to film those. The driver is Ann, who is already a fully qualified driving instructor - but if you can drive like her you will easily pass!

By looking at this video I was little confused. Where there were two mini roundabouts back to back. U don't gave left signal on first exit.and second exit was streight so why did you gave signal for exiting.

You can look at that junction in two ways; either a) treat it as a separate left, then right turn - or b) regard it as straight ahead for the complete junction as a whole. We spoke to the local test examiners, and they said that as long as we used the correct lane position (ie left, then right lane) then we would be OK. It doesn't really make much difference whether we indicate or not here.

Also bus was indicating to move out as you overtook. To be safe wouldnt you normally slow down and wait? Seems like something you may get failed for.

If you’re committed to passing the bus when it indicates right it’s safer to keep going than brake suddenly.

In 05:14 you are going straight at the miniroundabout and you signaled. My instructor said you don't have to signal if you are going straight in miniroundabout just if you are going to turn right or left. So? Shall I signal or no?

It's optional to indicate when leaving a mini-roundabout. If we think it will help others understand where we are going, then we should - but most of the time there is little benefit so we choose not to. You will have to decide what is best for each situation.

There was no need to indicate if our road position shows what we are doing. We can’t see on the video, but Ann would have checked her mirrors and looked ahead for traffic before committing to the manoeuvre.

Every driving test includes around 20 minutes of 'independent driving', where the driver must follow directions on their own. 80% of tests follow a sat-nav, the other 20% follow traffic signs. For the remainder of the driving test, the examiner will direct the driver themselves.

We put it into park when we will be stationary for a little while, to save us from pressing the foot brake for ages - but wouldn't bother if we are only stopping for a few seconds. There aren't any rules about this, so do whatever is easiest / safest!

Yes, full lock when the 3rd bay is level with your shoulders seems to work for most people.

And you also didn't park within the lines at the end. I hear alot of people fail at the end of their driving test normally for sloppy mistakes. Im a complete newbie just trying to soaking in as much knowledge and learning before i get going with my first lesson

Parking at the end of the test isn’t counted as a manoeuvre, so it doesn’t matter if you stop on a bay line.

You can use your own car for the driving test, as long as it fits the requirements. Have a look at this website; www.gov.uk/driving-test/using-your-own-car I would recommend that you have a lesson or two with an Approved Driving Instructor before attempting your test. They will be able to check that your driving is up to standard and explain what the test will include. Good luck!

Yes, so long as you have lived here for less than one year. Make sure your car is suitable for the test (guidelines are in the DVSA website) of course!

If your planning to get a automatic car once you pass then go for automatic. I was always nervous to go to my manual lessons because i did'nt like changing gears etc so i moved to auto lessons and i passed 4 days ago with 2 minors

If the examiner did ask that question, we’d answer “this car is electric, so doesn’t have any engine oil - but in a normal car we would....” and then give the normal answer 👍🏼

Hi I have my auto test next week and my instructor says I don't need to use handbrake in automatic unless I'm parked but OK to use for break when stopped in traffic is this correct thanks I don't want to fail because I don't use the handbrake thanks

We usually only use the handbrake when parking the car, but the examiner won’t mind if you use it more as long as the car is always under your control.

Is it fine in the driving test if you touch the white line like that parking ?

When doing the Forward Bay Park manoeuvre you can roll across it when going into the bay, but you should finish with all 4 wheels inside the white lines. When driving into the bay at the end of the test, it’s not marked as a manoeuvre so the lines don’t matter as much.

Sorry , but all the school mock driving lessons R in EMPTY road , and high way (motorways) , it isn't difficult like have your driving lessons and then your test in LONDON.

You’re right - the driving test centres in large cities have lower average pass rates than here in Bury St Edmunds - but the average pass rate here of just under 50% is similar to the national average pass rate. So, whilst there are undoubtedly harder (and easier) places to do a driving test, the test routes here are of a fairly average difficulty.

in the real driving test if the speed limit of the road is say 20 MPH but i’m doing 17 or 18 is that a fail or minor fault?

Don’t ever feel that you need to drive at exactly the speed limit. If the road is safe and clear then doing at least 75% of the limit is wise - but if there is poor weather / a hazard / tight bend etc then it’s fine to drive as slow as you need to. 👍🏼

Of course! If anything we wouldn’t recommend trying to drive at exactly the speed limit - as you will have to look at the speedometer more than usual to ensure you don’t accidentally break the speed limit.

Look a bit closer - the checks are all there. We don’t need to exaggerate our mirror checks to make sure the examiner spots them - just a quick look is fine 👍🏼

Speed limit is 50 road is clear, you was doing 38, that would be minor fault haha, i got two minor faults for doing 25mph in 30mph zones very picky test centre

It depends on the situation - and that 50 limit is on a bend into a roundabout, and it’s safer to drive a little slower there. Don’t think of the speed limit as some kind of target - it’s just the maximum speed allowed.

Don’t regard the speed limit as a target, just drive at a speed that is safe for the conditions 👍🏼

As many as it takes to be able to drive safely on all types of road and complete the manoeuvres. It varies massively, but the average is about 40 hours of tuition. Good luck 👍🏼

If we think we will be waiting for some time, then we select Park to allow us to take our foot off the brake pedal. It's similar to using the handbrake on a manual car - just use it when you think it's useful. Good luck on your test!!!

Parking at the end isn't marked the same as the forward bay park manoeuvre - there will be no fault given if the car is on either bay line. Which other faults did you spot?

@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Just to be clear, this isn't me saying these are serious faults, this is my driving instructor. The scraping against the curb, the changing direction midway through the roundabout, and the pulling out at the side of the bus and forcing the driver of the other car to brake

Forgetting the 'tell me' question at the start of the test would only be a Driving / Minor fault - so no big deal. However, if you forget how to do the 'show me' question and the distraction leads to a loss of concentration or car control, then that could result in a Serious fault - so make sure you practice how to do everything in your car! This video is really all about promoting the electric car which will eventually hook your car up to a satellite that will stop you going to places of your choice (closed zone areas) and monitor how much fuel you have been using (all part of track and trace your life)! Government can't track and trace your movements in a petrol or diesel car and this is the real reason for electric vehicles to take over!

With an automatic car we only use the handbrake when parking the car - but if you want to use it more often then you are free to. As long as the car is safely in your control then the examiner will be fine either way :-)
