Understanding the geo-politics of Singapore and Malaysia, most "Malaysian dishes" pre-dates the formation of Malaysia as a country. So a lot of the same dishes can actually be found in both Singapore and Malaysia, with both countries having equal claim. There are also a few varieties of laksa available in the region. Katong Laksa (the one that you guys are more familiar with) and Siglap Laksa originates from Singapore whereas Penang/Asam Laksa and Johor Laksa hails from Malaysia. Also, don't forget that it was the merger of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and North Borneo that led to the formation of Malaysia... even though Singapore got kicked out in less than 2 years afterwards and became an independent country. So it does get difficult to pinpoint the true origin.
@PrograError
@PrograError 8 ай бұрын
*Cue the Food wars, with Indonesia also jumping in with a bat * but seriously, SE Asia all more or less have similar food... especially the former colonies due to the flow of the people looking for better money especially from China and India. As for the laksa, singapore's is more on the coconut fragrant where in penang's is more on the texture with the sardines and a lot more on the sweet side from the pineapple
@icekekiri

Oh no please no more food war! LOL! Us Southeast Asians should band together and remove all country and state lines when it comes to delicious food! Be proud of the region and each other!

Hahahaha! Yeah, f*** those food fights. We all have great tastes because of all our collective efforts - Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, even maybe lil Brunei, though I'll be damned if you ask me what is Brunei food? Idk, but I'm sure they contributed something into the mix

All sea food are actually imitation/ copycat from the original country of china
@NijiKonohana
@NijiKonohana 8 ай бұрын
Lmao if we wanna pin-point the origins of the culture in the Malay Archipelago, we will need to go back all the way to the days of Majapahit, or even earlier. That said, the earliest recorded history of laksa specified that it was created by Peranakans on the west banks of Malacca, hence calling it a "Malaysian dish" is not inaccurate. But that doesn't mean that the Singaporean variants are any less authentic, as culture is always in flux. Many dishes that can be found in one part of SEA can easily be found in another part of SEA, often with a different name and ingredients. And all are just as validly part of that country's culture.

Off my head I'm thinking: Singaporean-style Bak Kut Teh (more peppery compared to the herbal soup seen in Malaysia), Char Kway Teow, Bak Chor Mee (both dry and soup versions for two different options), Orh Luah (oyster... pancake? omelette?), sambal stingray... this list is never ending! Also maybe this might challenge Jamie - Kway Chap with braised pig innards (my personal favourite is the large intestine, but you can try a bit of everything!). Okay, I'm hungry now haha

Ahh I miss Singapore. I used to travel there (or through there) 4 or 5 times a year in the last 10 or 15 years of my working career. Retired now. My personal preference is Pepper Crab with steamed or fried buns to mop up the sauce and a side of seafood fried rice. On a trip there with my twin brother (he flew from California, I from the UK) we found a fantastic Laksa place outside the main city which had won awards... you sat on plastic chairs on the pavement (sidewalk) and were approached by a beer seller who was a separate merchant to the unlicensed Laksa seller. Fantastic rustic delicious.

Love the fact that you lads came all the way here to sample the food :). FYI, the other famous oyster cake stall (Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake) is in Berseh Food Centre. If you only had a few days to spend to try hawker food in Singapore, I would suggest Old Airport Road Food Centre (accessible by the subway (or MRT as we call it) , Circle Line: Dakota Station) which has one of the greatest variety of hawker stalls and some of the famous hawker franchises in Singapore do set up their branches here. Another favourite hawker centre of mine is Hong Lim Market & Food Centre (accessible by North East Line & Downtown Line : Chinatown station). Famous stalls include : Outram Park Char Kway Teow, Ipoh Crayfish Hor Fun, Ji Ji Wanton Noodle Specialist, Curry Chicken Noodles (both stalls are good) and my favourite Cantonese Delights stall which does a really good Chicken Cutlet Noodles. Be prepared to go early though as long queues form up by 11:30am for most of these stalls.

Live in Australia and Laksa is one of my favourite dishes. Because I'm a sucker for cheap but good, and meaty meals, there is an Asian Restaurant near me that has Laksa with Chicken, Pork, Tofu, Prawn and Squid, along with the sprouts, some fresh chilli and a beautiful broth. Of course it's not normally all that meat, they are just the options and I get a combo. You are absolutely right, Jamie, when you say that some restaurants have just noodles, broth and toppings that are all quite separate from each other, it is always great when you find one that balances all the elements to perfectly compliment each other.

Wonderful stuff fellas. I’ve been to Singapore many times and dream of its food especially Nyonya which is a trial to make but well worth it. I also speak Bahasa so just a minor correction on laksa pronunciation, the first (a) is pronounced like the last, more of a U sound. So Lucksah would be closer to the phonetic. We’ll have to wait and see if you had time for High Tea in the series but I hope you did. Singapore really know how to put on a show when it comes to the food experience. Just wondering, did Ben and Jamie get some of those fried buns (man tou) to dip into the chili crab gravy? Because if they didn't, they have definitely missed out on another layer of enjoyment

1. Most Laksa stalls in Singapore don't normally give prawns. Cockles are more common. While having the sambal chili helps to enhance the flavour, it is possible to request for 'no chili' for laksa if you find it too spicy. 2. Mud Crabs are the most common crabs seen for sale in Singapore. In second place, it will be the Flower Crab.

I was waiting for this! And now, I guess that's the end (for now) of your Singaporean Food Adventure. You've hit all the high spots - Chicken Rice, Chilli Crab, Laksa, Fishhead Curry, Satay (at Satay Street!) and my fave - Char Kway Teow. You want more recommendations? 1) Ethnic Diversity - Singapore is a GREAT place to try Indian Food. Head down to Tekka Centre to try Indian food. Geylang Serai Food Centre (currently under renovation, done sometime in 2024), for Malay food. 2) If the Chilli Crab is not spicy enough (Jumbo's Chilli Crab is sweeter and less spicy - some say more "eggy". Longhouse's Chilli Crab is supposedly spicier.) Try Black Pepper Crab, the slightly lesser known sibling of Chilli Crab. Also, you did not order Mantou. It's a fried bun that you can use to soak up Chilli Crab sauce. I once ordered naan from an Indian stall and use that to dip into the chilli crab sauce. Only in Singapore. (And I believe some places offer White Pepper Crab.)

Great video! LOVE everything you guys have showcased in the 2 episodes on Singapore food! but I might be biased. :) A tip on the chilli crab. 1 crab is pretty big, and you can ask them to prepare half the crab in chilli and another in black or white pepper. Some might argue that Black Pepper Crab is better than the Chilli Crab at Jumbo.

You should come back and try some Malay and more Indian cuisine. You gotta try the different rojak from various ethnicities we have here in Singapore. Each of the ethnicities have their own noodle dish, rice dish, economical rice, and different family style dishes. If you have the time do try them all. And as a healthcare worker, I'd recommend you do a health screening afterwards.

You generally will never go wrong with street food in asia. Any establishment that has lasted more than a month is guaranteed to be good, since unlike hole-in-the-wall places in the west, they don't rely on the same clientele or "curious" foodies; they have to appeal to the general masses while also standing out. It results in food that is simultaneously unique but also consistently delicious.

oh and sometime doubt the queue... sometimes it's just the hawker being pretty slow... but sometimes it's also really nice ... (and not to forget, some hawker's temper is fire...)
@MechaEmperor7000
@MechaEmperor7000 8 ай бұрын
@@PrograError Very true. If I remember there was a way to tell; if you're unsure, wait a single minute. If the queue hasn't completely changed faces, it's the hawker being slow. if it has completely changed but didn't get shorter, it's definitely a banger.

Looking at Asian cruises for next year and a few start in Singapore so you get a few days before you sale there and this is just going to make me want to go even more. Been about 10 years since I was last in Singapore and Malaysia (I grew up there) and I’m long overdue another visit! Food is so cheap there too that you can sample all the dishes and not worry about overspending too

The oyster cake was my fav! I also love fish head curry, especially at muthus where they used to have unlimited rice refill. Satay club was so good when they were at Esplanade, just as good when they went to Lau Pa Sak. Not sure if they are still there, not been home for years

It's kinda a big boomerang if you think about it as modern Singapore was founded by the British, then Singaporean food appeared in UK and now Sorted is in Singapore enjoying the Singapore food and culture. Have a great one guys!

Theres two words that spring to mind when the Sorted team go on an epic international adventure to discover new food and culture. Tax deductible. Only joking, I'm loving this. I'm hoping a lot of this was filmed earlier in the year and right now you're enjoying a well earned break.
