Mock Driving Test - UK Practical Driving Test
- - - - RECORDED BEFORE CORONAVIRUS - - - -
This is Fatima who started to learn with us who had done a test in Paris which she unfortunately fail a while ago. She's done roughly 35 hours at this point and this is her first mock test in the UK, with her real test the next day. She does make many serious faults, lets see if we can correct them before the actual test.
In the video the text colour would mean:
GREEN: GOOD POINTS
AMBER: ADVISORY AND MINOR FAULTS
RED: SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS FAULTS
These videos are designed to show you mistakes and how to fix them.
Isleworth driving centre test route.

Hi just wanted to say it took me so so long to pass, it took me two years on and off of doing driving lessons. Honestly you just need to believe in yourself and just pretend your examiner is your friend, just talk to them and I also took nerve calming drops 15 minutes before my test I was so relaxed ! Passed my test today first time with two minors. I dont want to get into all the cheesy, arrogant shit, so will just say 3 things: 1. These videos help so much. Just watching them and working out what are mistakes and what are not really helps. I spent hours watching these videos. 2. For people learning at the moment, watch videos like these, but also do tons of practice outside of lessons if you can. I only had 10 hours of lesson, but did 1.5k miles in my own car over 7 weeks of learning in total. I was insanely nervous coming up to my test. Never been so nervous in my life - I don't even know why. I didnt have lunch that day because I couldn't eat due to the nerves. However, watching these videos is calming, and it relaxed me before my test. 3. If you haven't started driving yet because you're too young, I would really really recommend going to somewhere like mercedes benz world and paying 50-60 quid to drive a car around a practice area. You get to drive a brand new mercedes, but you also learn clutch control so when you turn 17 you can go straight on the road with no issues - it might take a few goes on the private track, but it would take double the time with an instructor. That's what I did, and as I said I passed within 7 weeks of turning 17. Hope that didn't sound narcissistic or anything, just some advice. Trust me, the feeling of going out on the road by yourself for the first time accompanied by your favourite tune is one of the best feelings ever.

Slightly past the 16-minute mark of the video, the woman taking a mock test nearly runs a temporary traffic light. Some may think it is no big deal but she could have caused a crash. That she was given a dangerous fault for the incident is important because such a fault SHOULD be classified as serious or dangerous.
@kirstyphillips8604
@kirstyphillips8604 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree with her first serious for undue hesitation- where she was turning right at the roundabout? Any of those cars with a right signal could have been doing a 360 degree turn around the roundabout and she would have crashed into those cars if she had gone. Surely it was safer to wait for a clear gap?

You’re not actually meant to do a u-turn on a mini roundabout so yes it’s undue hesitation.
@kirstyphillips8604
@kirstyphillips8604 4 жыл бұрын
@@emmaholman8407 Under rule 188 of the highway code, it says "Avoid making U-turns at mini-roundabouts. Beware of others doing this." It doesn't explicitly ban it, so people may do it. Even if it were banned that doesn't mean silly people wouldn't do it, so in my opinion it's safer to be vigilant and look after your own life by looking for a clear gap.

@@kirstyphillips8604 If you do a U-turn at a mini-roundabout, firstly there needs to be enough width to do it in the vehicle you are using, and what your turning circle is, secondly as you come up to the right turn exit (which you are circulating beyond) you need to dwell whilst others gaze at your decision.

I did a burn out on my test and still passed. A couple of things should be noted This was in Australia in a small town then and 1974 . : ) That indicator question should have failed . You can check on inside if working. If a globe has failed it will flash faster. Then you can get out to see which one. We don't do emergency stop in Australia as can be dangerous and cause a crash. 3 point turn on a road also dangerous find a place to turn in like a drive way.

Do you think its okay for a learner driver to take lessons far away from their official test area? I am going university and I'm not sure if I should take lessons there or if I should come back home frequently to learn with my regular instructor. I'll also be using my home instructors car for the official test so is it best to stick with him so I can get used to the car so therefore come home frequently...or should I save the hassle and take lessons near uni. My main concern is getting used to the car and the controls for my official test which I may not be able to do as much if I took lessons near my uni.My uni is in London so will take me an hour and a half to get home. Sorry for the long message any help will be grateful. Thankss🙂

She is a good driver dealt well with many meeting situations. That shows she plans ahead and anticipate in most cases. The most difficult part of driving in the UK narrow roads and parked cars. One serious fault of clearance should be cancelled 😆. I have seen many cases of experienced drivers damaging side windows of parked cars. The construction traffic light that was definitely a major.

The left hand indicator is used to signal an intention; to turn left or stop on the left. In the absence of a side road it could be inferred by some following drivers that you intend to park and then they try to overtake you on the right. It is not so likely in a complex main road urban situation as opposed to estate roads. You are allowed 15 faults and the pedantic ones should not cause you to fail by totting up.

I was confused by this too but then when you follow the sat nav the second exit is a right turn so it makes sense to be in the right lane to turn. I can see this one catching a lot of learners out, especially since it's right after that other mini roundabout.

Hello I was hoping someone could help. There is a traffic light box junction where I live but on only one side it is a filtered light (one arrow to turn right just underneath the normal red amber green) how ever on this side it is a single lane so me waiting for the green arrow would prevent others moving behind me, what should I do, my driving instructor seems to think this is about priority, so if the green light shows I should proceed to turn right however watch out for other cars and if the arrow is on I shouldn’t have to worry but I don’t believe this correct could anyone clarify for me please ?
@na-up6gs
@na-up6gs 3 жыл бұрын
If there is only one lane there there should be a filter lane in the middle of the road for your car to stop and proceed when the filter arrow show otherwise you give way to oncoming traffic i.e when it's only green and not filter!

How prepared are you? If you are going in 95%, then you are not giving yourself the best option. On your test day, you are no longer classed as a learner, the examiner expects you to know all the rules and follow them perfectly, hence why you booked the test. If then you are lacking in your knowledge, you might pass by luck but you are putting yourself in a situation to make mistakes and you don't know which mistake will make you fail. You want to aim for 0 minor faults, and then if you make a few thats accidental. Look up commentary driving videos and practice say what you see and tell yourself what to do. Learn to breathe and relax, don't rush off when you park up, take a few seconds and go when you are ready, also listen to radio, classic fm is soothing, keeps you relaxed. Wear sports gloves with holes and good grip, you won't see or feel sweaty hands and you will not get more nervous.

You should probably just learn manual because then you’re able to drive both manual and automatic. Also manual driving is a good skill to have, but in the next 10 years or so, manual cars will become very rare

Chika Ogakwu I’m doing automatic lessons as it easier and quicker to learn. And I’m getting an automatic car, some people prefer manual because they say it is more fun to drive. I just prefer automatic because there is less to think about while driving. It really just depends on the person and their preferences. However most cars will be automatic soon anyway, which is another reason why I went with automatic lessons!

I was learning how to drive manual but was finding it so challenging, it actually put me off learning to drive for a while till i made a decision and switched to automatic(best decision I'veever made), started automatic lesson in November and passed my test in February first time with 3 minor faults. I still wondering why I didn't do automatic straight away. But I guess it depends on what you want at the end of the day.
@alim2drive227
@alim2drive227 4 жыл бұрын
If you ever get a company car, they mostly provide manual. It is cheaper to buy and on insurance. The only thing that automatic will reduce is the extra work of the clutch and the gear, otherwise the road rules and situations will be the same in either car.

Just drive safely that's all, don't try to be perfect but obviously you need to know how to drive but the most imporyant thing is to drive in a way you and other road users are safe. I passed mine in February, check your mirrors before any manouver or change direction. I was a very nervous learner but after my test, the examiner said I was a very good and safe driver. Goodluck with your test.

I done manual but still works: sometimes even if you aren’t changing direction or entering a new road, just check your mirrors if it’s safe to. Not only will the examiner notice this making him/her recognise that you’re being aware at all times but will also make you look more prepared. Secondly if you are asked to go (for example) 3rd exit on a round about but as you about to start going to the next outside lane, there’s another car blocking your exit, then just keep going round to the next exit and leave the roundabout then. This is perfectly fine as long as you do it safely. Even if a mini roundabout looks clear, slow down to about 5-10 mph anyway to make sure no ones coming from your right. Good luck, you got this.

debbie peter Genuine curiosity now- why are they fun tho? I either hear that or “you have more control” most the time. Fun tho? Because I get to push an extra pedal and wiggle around a stick? I don’t find that very fun, just an additional unnecessary hindrance. I just wanna do the very thing cars a made for - drive.

Jacob Thompson Sometimes I wish I could but Im not the one paying for my lessons so it’s not really my call to make. Not to mention there’s such a stigma against autos in the uk that it makes it pretty hard not to pass in a manual. Funny you should say that tho- I do already have an auto lined up and waiting on the other side once I pass. Which should hopefully be soon once tests open back up properly again.

@@JayTraversJT Well, you do have more control in a manual. I have driven both as my mother only had autos and I often drove her cars as well. You definately notice in tbe winter when the weather is bad that you have more control in a manual. Fun, definitely. Nothing like driving my manual car down a country road . Just not the same in an automatic. That being said, I didnt mind driving my mums cars at all, just like manuals more. Most "car people" will choose manual over auto any day. I have owned around 20 cars and probably driven over 30 cars and would choose manual every time. However, there is nothing wrong taking auto test. The only issue is that if someone is intending to buy a used car after they pass their test, definitely more choices with manual and autos are also alot more expensive to buy.

I like driving automatics because they are easier to drive. I have yet to drive a manual although throughout much of the 1980s, the only vehicles that my parents had ever driven had been manuals. Then it was down to 1 manual, then, come 2004, none.

I have watched videos of sample practical driving tests to qualify for a full Japanese equivalent to a British class B-auto license. I was surprised not to find a video Iof a mock test using a manual car because it is not like manuals have gone away in Japan. Manuals haven’t in Australia or New Zealand either gone away even though I do admit that automatics have become more popular within those two South Pacific countries, too. My dad for about half of the 2010s owned a manumatic Mazda midsize sedan that he drives to this day. The other car on my parents’ driveway is a pure automatic even though I can’t recall a single time when I have needed to put a vehicle into low gear to try to gain more traction (only to reverse and drive forward in small increments to turn myself around on a narrow dead-end side street after getting stuck in snow on a winter night in Toronto in Ontario, Canada). I had to, seeking a full license in my home province of Ontario, pass 2 practical driving tests (similar to what exists in New Zealand). I admit that I probably never will move to somewhere outside of my home country although if I were to convert my license to one issued by the DVSA, it would be a B-auto one. The driving tests that I had to pass were hard @ 1st (failing my 1st attempt @ each) but with over a decade of having held an equivalent to a B-auto license (class G Ontario one) uninterrupted, I am a more confident driver without a single moving violation. I did obtain a parking ticket once for parking a car past midnight local time on a side street in the west end of Toronto. As ridiculous as the no-on-street-parking-past-midnight by-law is for anyone not holding a valid local permit, I recommend that anyone looking to travel to that city to find a place to park, if overnight, off of any street to avoid being ticketed.

I don't know why manual drivers think people with automatic cars would not be able to pass a test on a manual car. When I started learning how to drive, it was a manual, and it was more complex and had to do different things in the same time, but I had to stop taking lessons because a really private family problem. So I have stopped for a whole year and all my money went to the drain. Later on I have moved to a different part of the country, changed partner, and changed a job as well (rough times). But my job was way too far from my location, so if I did not want to spend 3 hours just on travelling DAILY, I had to find a quick, cheap, and safe solution to this. Having an automatic car and having automatic lessons just came obvious. And to be honest I do not want to be an instructor, a truck or bus driver, or a delivery girl, so it is absolutely on me what car I am driving and no one else. And to be honest it is fun and sort of a good feeling driving a manual, I don't think I will ever switch to one. I am way too comfortable in my automatic car and as I said, I can pay my full and 100% attention to what is happening around me. Best choice of my life.

@@vivienm2037 I plan to address your point in stages because you have said so much about automatic vehicles. "I don't know why manual drivers think people with automatic cars would not be able to pass a test on a manual car. When I started learning how to drive, it was a manual, and it was more complex and had to do different things in the same time, but I had to stop taking lessons because a really private family problem. So I have stopped for a whole year and all my money went to the drain." I am sorry to hear about your lack of success obtaining a UK B-manual licence. That is even with manual vehicles back home in Canada mostly having synchromesh transmissions aside from HGVs or very old (often pre-2000s) buses. Even long-distance coaches mostly are automatics now in my homeland. "Later on I have moved to a different part of the country, changed partner, and changed a job as well (rough times). But my job was way too far from my location, so if I did not want to spend 3 hours just on travelling DAILY, I had to find a quick, cheap, and safe solution to this." I understand what it's like to find a job far away from one's place of residence. I have had to be flexible in where I have wanted to work within the southern part of my home province (Ontario), taking into account the price of rides ordered via Uber or Lyft. That I have a full B-auto licence equivalent in no way means that I want to drive if I can get away with not driving. I have more peace of mind albeit with the odd job that likely is less expensive to commute to by driving than by using a ridehail service. I do believe Britain proper has apps via which to order minicabs. "Having an automatic car and having automatic lessons just came obvious. And to be honest I do not want to be an instructor, a truck or bus driver, or a delivery girl, so it is absolutely on me what car I am driving and no one else. I am way too comfortable in my automatic car and as I said, I can pay my full and 100% attention to what is happening around me. Best choice of my life." Manuals are going out of style within Canada, the contiguous US, Australia, NZ & Japan. John Daub, a US-born long-term resident of Japan, rented late in 2019 a 4-door automatic transmission Toyota Mark X (from his video "Japanese Rental Car Experience: Better than Trains?"). The video "What Driving in Japan is Like" also mentions the ease of renting automatics in Japan. It doesn't appear that unlike in much of Europe (e.g. see the Wolters World KZfaq video "What You Should Know About Renting a Car in Europe"), automatics cost more to rent in Japan than manuals. I see myself driving automatics for the rest of my driving life, and it isn't such a bad thing. Videos from 2017 (titled "The disappearing stick shift" [on the KZfaq channel "Idaho News 6"]), 2015 ("The death of the stick shift?" [on the CBC News KZfaq channel]) & 2013 ("Driver instruction: is it time to ditch the stick shift?" [on the CBC News website]) all mention how manuals are going out of style in Canada and within the contiguous US. I have used manual mode on some manumatic vehicles that I have driven even though I have in most cases not used a gear higher than 4th for driving under 50 mph. No vehicle that I have driven has, if a manumatic, had a gear higher than 6th although driving in that high of a gear is hard at speeds of under 70 mph (with no road on which I have ever driven having a speed limit above 62, & even those within Ontario that do have a higher speed limit located in Ottawa, the Niagara Region & the southwest, regions that I am unlikely to visit for quite awhile).

Haha in Australia you have to have logged 120 hours of driving practice, manual or auto, before you can book your test. This can be a combo of lessons and driving with a family member or friend. The logs also check whether you’ve driven in a range of conditions, road types and you need to do I think 20 hours of night driving. You lot in the UK have it dead easy. The only way to avoid the logbook is if you wait till you’re over 21, at which point you don’t have to count up your hours.

This is what we received today; Emergency driving test application service to close The online service to apply for an emergency driving or theory test if you’re a critical worker has closed today (14 August 2020). Inviting critical workers to book a test We’ll continue to provide emergency tests to critical workers who have already successfully applied for a driving test. We’ll email them to invite them to arrange a test appointment online as soon as possible. When critical workers book their test they will be able to see all available appointments for the next 6 weeks. Limiting the booking window to 6 weeks allows us to respond to any change to COVID-19 government guidance on a national and local level. When the booking service will reopen At present the booking system remains closed to all new non-critical tests. We’ll let you know when we are reopening the service for everyone. This includes people who: have now taken a test that was originally cancelled due to coronavirus, but failed and need to retake their test are taking a test for the first time Until we reopen the booking service to the general public, only critical workers who have been invited to book a test can use it. Tests for non-critical workers should not booked. We’ll monitor tests booked for non-critical workers and we’ll cancel any that do not match our records. Why the critical worker service is closing Since we introduced the emergency test service the situation has changed significantly. The crucial need to provide NHS staff and ambulance drivers with a driving test to support the government response to the pandemic has eased. Public transport is now much more readily available, and people are allowed to share cars with appropriate measures in place, in most of the UK. The country is going back to work. To help us return our services to normal, we need to move away from offering tests exclusively to critical workers and reopen our services to the general public. We will update you again once the date for reopening the online booking service to the general public has been confirmed. Hope this helps

You say that because you're relying on the satnav. Most of the time she was driving just below 20 in a 20 zone. The speed clearly says 20 on the roads.
