Whether that’s JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley, you will usually find other investment bankers also having economics degrees - but how do you choose the best economics degree when studying in the UK?
In this video where I perform a UK university tier list, I cover the best UK economics degrees and help you identify which are that target universities for investment banks, semi targets and others which might not be obvious but can still pursue a career as an investment banker by attending those UK universities.

I didn’t take A level maths but I am doing a Politics with economics course at university of Bath. Because this course is obviously weighted towards politics rather than economics does this mean my chances of IB are very very very slim ? Thanks

And yes id say the uni is more important than degree eg history at Cambridge is better than maths degree at a uni ranked 50th......but doing a more specialized degree from lower down the rankings is the only way to compete with the top uni students.

Hi, based on what was seen online(student room and other forums), certain individuals had a very strong opinion that cambridge economics is much more quantitative and harder than oxford e&m and is equivalent, if not superior regarding its applicability towards Investment Banking. I see that your list has ranked cambridge below oxford, can you please elaborate as I am rather confused.

I wouldn't say it's superior to Oxford. One reason for more quantitative theory is that a lot more graduates from Cambridge stay to do further study which helps them. But in the end both will get you interviews and rankings are based on the data available and experience. IB jobs will be easy from first two groups

How come youre choosing the diploma option? If it progresses to the MPhil then i would pursue that. Although if youre uncertain then id do the UCL course. I will make a video on Business Schools shortly but Cambridge Judge Business School isnt ranked super highly so dont do it for the sake of just going Cambridge. Business Schools rankings are important at postgrad level.

Hey bro, which is better... econ and management course at Durham or Bristol? Does Bristol have better employment opportunities being closer to London or is Durham better. Interested in going into either ib or financial consulting.

Both id say are equally great unis for those job opportunities, Durham is known less for its Eco vs Bristol but not by a lot. The cities are slightly different but I can vouch the course at Bristol is very rigourus plus the networking and student led resources are very helpful....I do agree the 2.5hrs journey from Bristol to London is easier than Durham to London. I got offers from both tbh and wouldve been happy with either.

Nah. If you want to work in banking then eco and finance is better as finance actually contains the product and real life things you’ll use. Eco is great because it’s very mathematical with econometrics but really that’s used for further study as opposed to using econometrics in your job. The benefit is you can show you have top maths skills. ….but to summarise it’s the finance part which is helpful for the job

Prestige wise I wouldn't say there's too much difference. Manchester will probably have a much bigger cohort to share application tips etc but for your choice I'd decide on the city more as well since prestige wise they're very similar. Once a very busy and lively city whilst Edinburgh is big but more chilled and different environment.

Oh man, that's great question! Tough question! If your sole focus is IB, id go for Warwick. You'll have enough quantitative aspects in your Warwick degree. Both are very different locations though!

The difference is small and separated by small things such as how many people have entered IB from there and some of the teaching quality

I wouldn't choose it just because it's Henley's. If you like the course details then it might be a good option for you but I know it's a small subsect of teams within banks that will recognize how good it is. For masters it's much better than bachaelors like I said though.

Tks for the amazing content! I have offers for Msc Business analysis and strategy from Uni of Manchester and Uni of Southampton. As an intl student, I want to work in consulting but in asia after the degree. What would you suggest in this case? Looking forward to your business school ranking!

Thanks for the support! Both are great unis - Southampton excels in its STEM subjects however id lean more towards Manchester. Its more of a well rounded uni and in my opinion has the better international ranking.

As a post grad, I’m accepted for banking and finance at St Andrews, and waiting to hear back from Kings, and UCL for management. Absolutely torn I really like the town of Saint Andrews and I’m not sure if I’m going to get into kings or UCL. Curious to hear your thoughts. I’m a recent US student grad. Not entirely focused on IB but more PE/VC or Real estate. Edit also accepted for management at Bayes Business school.

ST Andrews/UCL would be the top choices. UCL higher. But PE/VC is more about networking so from those unis it doesnt matter as much.

Thanks for the kind words! I would say Manchester. Erasmus is a great uni and is known within IB but Manchester has several advantages. It's a bigger uni giving more opportunities during your studies and provide a better experience. But it's known a little more as well. Not going to lie , both aren't going to give a brand name if you're wanting to work in the US (they hardly know the European unis!) but you can start off in London and transfer to NY

It's mostly for the banking/finance sector as that's where most people end up with economic degrees. For accounting, it's less relevant. Although this ranking is most used only in the first 10 years of your career, after that your work experience will matter.

There really isn't a big enough gap to give you an advantage between the two. Both are well respected and great unis. They have the tradition, teaching and successful alumni to give you solid options. Congrats as well on getting both offers, very competitive universities!

No not in terms of outputs. Id say Nottingham might be slightly better but not enough to make you change your mind. Both are big uni cities as well so very good for students.

Yep plenty of people from UoM are there but you have to make sure you get some good work experience. You might get your ideal role straight away but that's ok. But Alliance Business School is very good

Id say Birmingham has traditionally better course and known more. Not everyone will go into the details but if they do Loughborough is becoming just as good, but that’s less known. Warwick is the best from your list which I’m sure you know

Congrats man you killed it! To target IBs I'd focus on Warwick. You'll have enough eco there and you'll be able to get an internship easier. There are drawbacks of Warwick vs notts as well, mostly from the location point of view (check out my full uni ranking video). PPE is a great degree.

Would you say it’s possible to break into IB with Computer science degree from university of Loughborough and would you recommend doing masters and if so, where would you recommend to do the masters

I think I put Loughborough in the comments., Probably should include it on the list....but it's a good uni and increasing in quality every year. Slowly people are taking notes of it, IB are a bit slow because they're very traditional but they're recognizing that great graduates are coming from there. For masters ideally you want to be focussing on targets/elite (plenty of Loughborough graduates go there )

Hi mate, I really hope you can answer this for my son. He has an offer for UCL but is worried he didn't smash his final exam yesterday in maths, and needs A*. He also has an offer from Bocconi (Milan) unconditonal, and King's which only requires an A* in any subject, which he's confident in. I would like to know whether, if he doesn't get into UCL, whether Kings College or Bocconi would be better ? (For investment banking). Wall St Oasis posts say Bocconi is on the same tier as Kings, but I'm not sure, because it must be so much harder to get London investment banking jobs when you're degree is in Milan.

Boconni is a top uni. People apply for London/NY IB jobs from around the world and so banks know about the reputation of these unis. Bocconi has a top reputation in IB and is a target uni within Europe. I'd put Bocconi slightly above King's but King's business School is slowly improving as well. Just remember it might be easier to network and get interview when youre based in a London uni vs Italy.

Exeter is an incredibly good university (top 10 in the UK and ranked 7th for Economics) and is highly ranked in a number of different categories like student satisfaction and employment opportunities. It also has great sports facilities and a great campus located in a very student-oriented city. Been here for 2 years for Econ and honestly wouldn't choose anywhere else, been the greatest time of my life.

Hi , great video . Ive got two offers from Notts and Birmingham for Econ , however I'm currently not sure which one I should go to as Im unsure I achieved an A* in maths . Birmingham guarantees me a place if I miss the grade whereas Notts does not . Is it worth the risk making notts my firm and potentially not going to Uni in comparison to a guaranteed place at Birmingham , to most likely pursue Investment Banking . And how big of a gap is there between the two would you say in regards to the university being targeted by firms ? Thanks .

i’m in ur exact same position. i deffo didnt get an A* in maths but i still firmed notts. On the ucas website, it says that 77% of ppl who got aaa got into notts, and 36% who got aab got in, despite the initial offer being a*aa, so i think they’re somewhat lenient if u just miss ur offer.

for postgrads its a bit different. The video is focussed a lot more on undergrad, if it was postgrad then only LBS would be elite. At postgrad level people care about the degree quality a lot more than uni e.g. Cambridge business school isnt often ranked highly. Kings Business school is new and doesnt have a reputation right now but its still a good uni and course.

Congrats to her! At those unis there's not much difference in terms of end result - she will get great opportunities from them all. Some examples of things to look at is the city (feel free to check my book out). Bristol and bath are very different cities to Notts whilst they're also very different size universities. Bath is slowly improving and these days is often seen as better but Bristol is traditionally a top uni and attracts a lot of private educated students. Nottingham is known to have a more lively student life

I think Southampton is held in a little more regard its maths dept for example is very good. Both unis however are very different types so be aware of what they offer

Honestly at this level it comes down to the uni itself and city as the difference is small...although I would put Bristol higher than notts. I can say Bristol is a more pleasant city but smaller.

Id say the order you wrote it on. Eco as mentioned isnt part of Bayes business school and Henly business school (Reading) is better for postgrad and not undergrad.

walakum salam ! Bristol would be first. From the other two id say theres very little to choose from - both are great and just different cities/unis. but i'd lean towards Birmingham. I'd be surprised to see them in clearing though.

As a Bristol student I've found that although the Uni is targeted by IB, there is more of an emphasis on Big 4 Audit and Consulting. (Imo)

I remember when I was a bristol student, there was def a lot of consulting people, IB was talked about a lot less, more middle office roles. The majority of the accounting students did end up in audit as well

Both are great options and have a strong chance of success. Bristol is seen as more prestigious so would be known better for quality grads, plus I know the set up is strong in terms of student led help. Either way they'd have to still do a lot of work to get in but make sure he gets spring week offers as those will boost his chances.

Tricky choice because both are amazing. I feel the course at Bristol will be more quantitative so if you like that then choose Bristol. Edinburgh will give you a more well rounded qualification, do you have preference in city? Congrats on the offers as well!

Thanks for the support! The difference becomes more pronounced as you go into your second year. On a straight Eco degree youll do more advanced econometrics, learn econometric software e.g. STATA etc and essentially do more statistics. On Eco + mgmt youll do mgmt modules as well which focus on strategy, organisational change, marketing etc and essentially are qualitative. I prefer the second as i dont like stats but each to their own! Youll still have to do econometrics through your degree but not as much on a combined course.

Yes but you'll have to do a lot more networking and showcasing what you know about the industry. Importantly youll need to provide a good story why you decided to study Japanese and why you want to work in IB, and how they link.

Do you think in 20 years time the rankings could look different, I’d assume oxbridge+LSE remains on top, but do you think certain unis are on negative or positive trajectories?

Great question and the answer is yes when it comes to semi targets. As mentioned Bath only in the past 20 years appears here and people also forget Warwick is a new university compared to all the others so it shows what’s possible…..all you need are several years of high placements to push them up. I think Loughborough will definitely appear on this list in 10 years. Kings might drop to B as it seems to be on a downward trend. Durham recently started its accounting and finance and business course at the Stockton campus 10 years ago and entry requirements were BBC now its AAA course.

You'll have enough opportunities but you'll definitely have to work harder to demonstrate your skills than straight finance/eco/maths people

I was actually thinking about studying that at LSE 😅 it’s a good course! The knowledge won’t be super helpful in IB and so recruiters won’t see it and be attracted because if the degree but you will have a big advantage that you’re at LSE. Use the alumni, use the IB events held at the university and involve yourself with the people looking to get into IB as well. You’ll have a strong chance because those three points are massive levers in LSE even with a political degree

Given that I can take some additional economic courses in LSE from other departments. I’m not sure that I wanna work in IB in the future, but in economics/finance 100%

Nah mate never. The majority of graduate jobs in uk are very structural in terms of recruitment, mostly online applications. HR will see cvs more and focus on target unis and for Warwick vs City more people from banks will go to Warwick to give presentations , much much more….showing you how much they prefer those grads to City grads.

Both are top unis. At that level theres not much separating where you will end up post uni - it comes down to the university/city/lifestyle you enjoy. Both are very different in each of those regards. I prefer UCL just because id want to be London based, based in a vibrant city and ease of interviews and networking events.

good point, not many people know about that. However, I would say at undergrad level its not on the same level as the ones in this list. Some schools are very good at postgrad business such as Reading's Business School and people will like their specialised teaching.

Definitely but you're unlikely to break into PE straight after undergrad and no experience. HF and IB are more likely where you'll begin with IB way more likely .

@@ThatMuslimLife I went to icls open day They spoke a lot abt how they built this degree with finance companies in mind It’s a full eco degree taught using data science almost So u learn an Econ concept then use a programming language to analyse data from this economical data

Theres no difference at that level. Between those two id take a look at the stuff outside of he course since theyre equally good calibre...look at the city, the ease of travel for interviews etc
