I agree, you can see in the classic footage of Tewksbury the cathedral always remains dry because it was built on a localised high spot. Of course generations ago the UK's population was much lower so there wasn't the need to start encroaching onto flood plains to build housing estates.

Populations were lower back then. There is high pressure on councils to allow building housing especially *affordable housing*. Otherwise you have people complaining (rightfully) that rents are too high and there is no place to live. Its not so simple.

What is needed is to work with the natural world instead of arrogantly thinking it exists for us to control, and we can start with minimising building on flood plains.

Or perhaps just use common sense and not live on a flood plain. It should be pretty obvious that if insurance won't cover you for flooding then your house is likely to flood. The council where I live spent 5 million to protect 200 homes and now the rest of the city suffers now the council is bankrupt. That 5 million could have helped a lot more than 200 homes.

Some people tried that near me too. It worked during normal average flooding but when there was a more severe flood, the water went over into their walled in area and, sadly, when the flooding went down, it could not drain from within there area and they had to pump it out.

It's not the councils responsibility never has been. Canal and River Trust, who are a charity that have just had their government funding decimated, are responsible for all the canals and rivers in England and Wales. As a boat owner, I know this too well, having seen boat licences increase this year.

I don't think you would like the kind of dredging that would be required to remedy this sort of thing. And who would pay for it? Not the government, that's for damn sure.

The public sewers are the responsibility of the water companies. The Highways agency is responsible for drainage on motorways and trunk roads. Holland is not flooded cos after the flood of 1952 they understood drastic approach was needed. so RWS was created (national water mgmt body) to manage all rivers, dikes, canals... The crucial point : independence. No goverment nor any politician can influence or have a say in whatever decision or action the RWS takes. Building on flood plains over the past 40 years then people wonder why their homes are flooded. This is not climate change, this is just weather. Low lying areas and areas close to rivers have flooded for millennia.

I blame a combination of climate change and austerity, the latter of which everyone who voted in this toxic government is collectively partly responsible for.

I believe it was the EU that banned dredging, and the UK hasn't reinstated that practice. (The riverbed that flows through the town nearest me is now 'heaped' with shingle and silt. So much so, plants then young trees grew on these islands. The Riverside part of the town floods a few times of year now. A regular problem for residents and businesses alike). I don't know what the answer for residents in the UK (and other parts of Europe and the world) could be - unless all those affected were rehoused by their relevant governments, new homes built on higher ground And that's never going to happen, is it?

The cost of home insurance has increase considerably due to flood claims. My house is in area of risk of flooding and my premium more than doubled. However, as I live at the top of a hill the 135 ft church spire in my local town would need to be completely submerged before I was effected.

I live in South London and was surprised to hear Hackney in East London had flooded also, although I'm sure it was nowhere near as bad... I just pray the River Thames doesn't break its banks. All these floods are probably due to climate changes, and our incompetent government is not thinking and planning ahead.

Hi I love Nottingham it is the best city with two univercitys, a castle, Rock City, caves under the city, Down Loud and Bat Man's home. A deer park in a city. I could go on . Nottinghamshire is so very beautiful. I do love the River Trent. I had a boat and loved going up and down it. So looking at this make's one cry. 😢
