I played a game of SnV as my first game of BotC alongside several other people. The Storyteller gave us an easy list to work with, because it was most of us's first game. Unfortunately, they severely underestimated that they were throwing us, enjoyers of social deduction games, into a very info-heavy script. Long-story short, we found the No Dashii on the first day, and they were planning to fall back on it being a Vortox game but I was an Artist who had read the wiki, so I consulted the Storyteller with the good ol' "1+1=2?" and confirmed that no Vortox existed. We executed them, and then proceeded to execute the Evil Twin the next day immediately afterwards. Needless to say, the Evil team was not impressed with the Storyteller that game.

Did any of the other players understand that Jack was indirectly claiming mutant? Regardless, his tactic worked. Also: No one appears to have noticed that Richie was mad as the wrong character on the last night.

What should you do in that situation if you're the storyteller? He's already dead, and even if you can execute a dead player (can you?), doing so would have ended the day and let evil win (thereby rewarding him for breaking the rules). I don't see how you could have punished him for not being mad in that situation, but letting him get away with it feels wrong.
@bennburns
@bennburns 3 жыл бұрын
@@fatstingray He didn't break any rules. You don't have to be mad about anything, ever. You choose whether or not to engage with the mechanic, and the storyteller chooses whether or not to enforce the potential consequences. With regards to whether or not dead players can get executed. Yes, they absolutely can. in fact, sometimes it's a necessity (see the Zombuul in Bad Moon Rising).
@fatstingray
@fatstingray 3 жыл бұрын
Makes sense. I guess “breaking the rules,” wasn’t the right way to put it. It still feels like a loophole to me, though. Seems kind of not in the spirit of “madness” (I state confidently despite having no experience or idea what I’m talking about). It seems the reason a storyteller wouldn’t give consequences in that situation is just because they can’t. Backing the storyteller into a corner where any possible consequences given would decide the game, and the storyteller shouldn’t be deciding the game. It’s not an active decision to make the game more interesting, it’s a forced decision made because there’s no other choice besides ruining the game significantly. “Getting away with it based on a technicality,” perhaps. I don’t know, maybe I’m just spouting a bunch of bologna, all I know is that it doesn’t sit well with me/doesn’t feel quite right. Not a big deal, the end result would have probably been the same either way and the players enjoyed it (which is what matters), but I think it would bug me if I was the storyteller in a similar situation.
@bennburns
@bennburns 3 жыл бұрын
@@fatstingray I get you. But the thing to keep in mind is that breaking madness and not being executed comes with its own, arguably harsher, punishment. It makes you look like a liar. It erodes your legitimacy in a game where you absolutely need to be trusted, especially in the later stages. But perhaps the more relevant point is that Caley and Rich were effectively being punished by me not executing Rich for breaking madness. They tried to force an easy win with the Cerenovus' ability and I effectively decided that they'd squandered it by trying to cheese the game.

This might be a new ruling since this video was made, but shouldn't Linnet have become a Philosopher when she was barber swapped? I was watching an NRB video where the philo snake charmer was told if they swapped with the demon the demon would have become a philosopher not a snake charmer?

What stops the Pit Hag from turning a minion into a not-in-play Klutz? They must always be in play?
@BloodontheClocktower
@BloodontheClocktower 2 жыл бұрын
The role the Pit-Hag chooses must be not-in-play for the player to turn into it. However, there wouldn't be much value turning a minion into an evil minion into a Klutz - if the Evil Klutz were to choose an evil player when they died, then the Evil Team would lose. You might want an Evil Klutz if a Fang Gu is getting set to jump to an Outsider and the Evil Klutz is a mostly believed player, however the evil team wouldn't get much value from the Klutz's ability. - Evin

I've seen it in a couple games now. I really dislike the mentality that you can just come out as mad to someone as long as the ST doesn't hear you. It's like literally cheating. If it's in the official rules that's fine. But I think I will always house-rule that to straight-up cheating.
@GG-dt5hh
@GG-dt5hh 3 жыл бұрын
Board Game Rundown There is nothing preventing you from telling as many people as you want that you are mad. Nor should there be. Admitting to madness is basically just saying you value your information more than your life. If the ST doesn’t hear you, that shouldn’t be your fault. Otherwise no one would be allowed to have any conversations without the ST present. The whole point of the side conversations is to share any info you want without letting everyone know. That includes the ST.
@BoardGameRundown
@BoardGameRundown 3 жыл бұрын
@@GG-dt5hh That's a valid thought. But after the many many hours I have watched and researched the game I believe that every time this happens it ruins the experience that is happening inside the game. Saying that there is a rule in a game that you don't have to follow is just saying that there is no rule. I just also believe that the storyteller should know everything that is possible to know in the game. If someone wants to come out as mad to someone and then tell the storyteller that they did so, leaving everything up to them, then that seems fine to me. But to hide information regarding a rule from the person controlling the rules is in bad spirits to me.

@@BoardGameRundown Hi dude, Ben here, the guy running this game. We don't allow people to break madness when the Storyteller isn't around. Or, perhaps more accurately, if you do that, it still counts as breaking madness. Now, obviously, this relies on player honesty to some degree, and we have the pleasure of being able to pick from a pool of very mature and honest players for the stream. That's not to say that STs will run it that way. BOTC has the very D&D-esque pleasure of having different GMs with slightly different ways of doing things, but (and I'm sure you'll agree with me here) I'd advocate that all STs treat madness in the same way that we do. I can certainly assure you that no-one in this video (or indeed any of our streams) is breaking madness when the ST isn't around.

Hi, Ben. Loving the content and game. I remember a time on stream that someone said that they went up to town square really quick and told whoever was in there that they were mad before everyone else (including the ST) joined. Everyone had a laugh about it at the end of the game, so it doesn't really matter. You guys are all clearly good friends. I'm just saying I've seen things happen. More to the point though, I'm glad to see that in general it is frowned upon like I was thinking :)
