You cannot compare the two, the US office is a sitcom, it has feel good moments and the characters make up 9 times out of ten while the Uk office has about 1 feel good moment at the end. One is a sitcom that uses the cameras in a documentary style and one is a brutally realistic mockumentary that thrives off the cringe humour.

The UK version tried to stick to the concept and keep the character somewhat believable. The US version went full on sitcom. Tim's pranks aren't even above what a middle school kid would do, with the stapler gag being about as ambitious as they ever got. Jim and Dwight set up elaborate cons that put them up with Newman & Redford in The Sting. With Michael and David, I think the difference is while both wanted to be the center of attention and be loved by everyone, Michael would prefer to be loved while David would prefer to be center of attention if they had to choose one. However with more than 10 times as many episodes, there was a lot more opportunity to show Michael's better attributes.
@pronkb000
@pronkb000 2 жыл бұрын
You could NOT do David Brent with the way US sitcoms work. The entire run of the UK Office is barely more than half of a regular US season--even Ricky Gervais probably couldn't tolerate that much David Brent as he was written.

Exactly. U.K humour isnt afraid to confront reality , so we can laugh at it and move on. What better way to feel ok about things than to see that other people go through what we do. Meanwhile with a U.S T.V / film, a young high school kid is bullied but suddenly gets superpowers, kills all the bad guys even though he can't dodge bullets, goes to Prom, wins back his girl whose dad is the villain, fights her dad, and learns to find himself thanks to his newfound power and really nothing else.

Love both versions, but I have to say that I prefer the UK version because of it’s more realistic approach. It’s cringey and awkward but that’s what makes the show so great, not to mention the gut-wrenching ending which is not what you would expect from a comedy. And Ricky Gervais’ subtle performance in the last scene is some of the best acting I have ever seen. Overall the US office is far more feel good and appeals to a wider audience, whereas The UK version is more of an acquired taste as it is so believable that it can sometimes be kinda depressing. Both fantastic shows.

I'd say the smartest thing the US version did was keeping Michael Scott to a minimum in the finale. He'd already gotten his happy ending and this was about the others. He only had three significant moments and one was told by Pam. All were perfectly in character, but didn't overshadow the show which actually shows that Michael has grown. I kind of feel Michael was always a little more self aware than David. He knows he's insecure while David doesn't.

To me I see the US version as a funny sitcom where Michael Scott has a milder version of the narcissistic personality disorder than in the UK version. The UK version was almost un-watchable for me, because I have worked with a boss like that and it has scarred me. David Brent is a spot on portrait of a grandiose narcissist.

+Jason Evan It actually makes sense for Jim and Pam to "lose". In the Uk, it spawns over 2 seasons (approximately 20episodes) so the relationship is being captured very smoothly and you have no time to be bored (since it's so short). They won't show the relationship's flaws, leave them from the focus or make boring episodes about them. Jim and Pam went 9seasons, that's about 180 episodes, some episodes are doomed to be "bad" or at least worse than the UK version in terms of raw camera time. The relationship had way more development so it was doomed to become somewhat "boring" (don't know why people would qualify the lack of drama in a marriage as "boring" anyway) or stale. Bottom line is : the more time you spend with "someone", the more flaws you discover.

Wolfie in the same vein, is a spelling mistake a good enough reason to assume I haven't watched the show? I thought the Jim and Pam relationship was much better developed over the 9 seasons than Tim and DAWN.

No one can beat the US when it comes to media at the moment. For decades the US has been a cultural superpower, creating more global hit TV shows and media than any other country. This is because the US has a strong economy and because they've made English an internationally spoken language. The US Office is another hit show, it contains the same recipe for success as most other hit US shows, and there's nothing wrong with that. The UK office was very successful but has also become a UK classic, it might not be entirely as relatable to a US audience, but everything from the writing to the directing is very iconic. I honestly think that to a US audience, the US version is probably better. But in terms of how influential the show has been to comedy as a whole, the UK version was a real ground breaker. That's why 'better,' is too vague, if it means which one is generally more preferred, I would guess the US office, but the UK office was more influential and unique.

TwistedBarbie I don't understand how you can deny America is the primary reason people learn to speak English today. It's the biggest economy in the world and most international media exports come from America, so they have spread English more than any other country in the past hundred or so years.

The US Office is over the top slap stick comedy that is completely bonkers and off the wall. They rode that train until the wheels fell off. Repeating the same types of episodes centred around Christmas, Halloween, weddings etc. It was a show catered to serve those that are very easy to please with the jokes so obvious and in your face. The UK Office is 14 episodes long full of the most skillfully subtle comedic brilliance that will never be topped.
