My grandmother, aka Mammaw, was an old East Tennessee woman who spent a lot of time with all of her many grandchildren, and helped to raise some of them. This song brings back memories so strong I can see her, hear her, and sometimes almost smell her. First time I heard it I cried for hours. Such a simple but powerful tribute to someone he cared about.

Word is Tyler wrote this song about going to his friend Cody’s grandmothers funeral. I’m not sure if you’ve seen the video or not but I highly suggest checking him out singing Shake the Frost at the Huntington Music and Arts festival in 2011, pretty sure he’s only 19 singing his heart out while people wonder about in the background not knowing they’re in the presence of a future legend.

Ps I live in Charleston WV and anytime he’s in the area performing my wife and I go see him. If you ever get the chance, he’s even better live. Especially if you can catch a solo acoustic show. Spine chilling

Think I saw an interview by Tyler where he explained that he and friends, of which I assume Cody was one of these friends, while young/teenagers would get together play and sing at a friend's grandmother's house. Obviously, she meant a lot to him and his friends. Virgie a town in Kentucky.

Despite his references in songs to popping pills, drinking, snorting his songs are mostly beautiful homages to the best of humanity...loving an elderly lady that encouraged her grandson and his friends in this one, being faithful to a partner by self pleasure in Ever Lovin' Hand, admiration of a man and his wife piecing together an old camper so they can one day travel in Country Squire, expressing empathy without patronizing in A Long Violent History....well the list could go on and on. Tyler Childers uses Hill country English in its beautiful and eloquent state and creates poetry as touching as Robbie Burns. There just aren't many, if any, like him.

"Tyler Childers uses Hill country English in its beautiful and eloquent state ".....beautifully put. I'm originally from western NC, now live in Wisconsin and people always comment on my accent. I've lost a lot of it, but it still pricks the ears of the natives, here. I still use a lot of Appalachian colloquialisms and people just look at me and scratch their heads trying to figure out what I just said. 🤣 Just saw Tyler live for the first time last night, at Summerfest in Milwaukee. Fantastic show and great turnout for a boy from Hickman Holler. Nearly sold out at an outdoor amphitheater of 23,000. The stage and half the seats were covered, but half weren't and it rained through most of the show, but even the people in the rain stayed to the very end!

This song gets me every time and not so much the sadness about going to a funeral, but this woman really meant something to him and when she died, he suffered- you can feel that hurt when he sings it. What Tyler is brilliant with is putting into words feelings and memories and that really resonates with folks who hear him. He learned his craft singing in church, and probably a small country one where folks talk like he sings. It's pure Appalachian (pronounced APPA-LATCH-UHN here) but sort of modern too. My grandfather played this type of music - mountain songs, sort of country, sort of gospel, sort of bluegrass but it's own thing too. Probably why I love Tyler's songs so much.

Great choice. It's honestly so hard for me to suggest songs to channels cause I would honestly recommend all Turnpike Troubadours songs, Tyler Childers songs, and Cody Jinks songs lmao. There's so many country bands and artists out there where I haven't heard a bad song from them yet!

Yeah, I mean the intention for this channel is to start off with requests and educate me on Country. But I'm doing my own research in my own time. Then eventually hopefully give a spot once a week to shine the spotlight on some up and coming talent that wouldn't get on the radio. But we'll see where this thing goes! If I could help bring another Tyler or Colter up - that would be life complete for me haha.

Love this it always gets me, Cody is one of his friends and his grandma would watch and listen to them. Virgie is a small town in Eastern Kentucky, and they called all the boys in to carry her to her final resting place. Tyler is awesome and everything comes from his heart. There’s another live version (i think live at red barn) of this song where he explains the story and meaning of the song. He mentions in that video that he had only performed the song once before all the way thru without breaking down. Powerful song, keep it up! Cheers! Hoping he and sturgills tour starts up again after the madness

It's for his best friend Cody's grandma. Tyler is a unique talent. I live in WV and he is a country boy and he can create a picture in his words and captures my life and my families lives. This song is about my mom and grandma. I can't listen to it without breaking down. We are all heathens here. Grandma sees past that and only sees saints.

So, I’ve got two things for ya. A. To your earlier comment about why we like Tyler so much, and he inspires us to work hard goes hand in hand with what we call “blue collar” work. I’m sure you guys across the pond have a very similar term, but Blue Collar is for the folks who are labor intensive. And Tyler’s music really resonates with myself and folks that work hard to make/earn a living. His stories about mining, building, and the problems/successes along with that just resonates really well. B. As other folks have said, the song was written about Cody’s grandma, who was like the groups grandma and Virgie is almost like heaven (from what I have concluded). A place where they can absolutely feel her presence even though she has passed on. Beautiful song, and I’m glad you chose this one! If you want another story, chose Banded Clovis! For hilarity, go with Ever Loving Hand. Keep up the good work man!

This week, I've done 'Hard Times' and that drops on the channel today. That song kinda hit me in the face and I really dove into the lyrics on that track so please feel free to drop by and listen. I'll do Ever Loving Hand next week because I need something light hearted from him I think. But I'm glad you're enjoying it brother and appreciate the comments. I can completely empathize with your first point, I know it's primarily created to speak to those that work in blue collar work (especially like 'Hard Times' is) but it still fires me up to get my head down and work hard which is the beauty of pulling the context out of the track. There's also kind of an education for people like me that aren't always familiar to the struggles of others. A lot of layers for sure, but an incredible musician with some important stories to tell. Cheers brother and feel free to drop by anytime!

Anything I may need to know?

The 94 Club - Tyler’s story telling will get you 95% there. The only think I didn’t know before is what a Banded Clovis was. You can do some reading on it if you want, but it’s pretty much a perfectly intact Native American tribal arrowhead. Finding one of these in the region that Tyler’s from/writes about is significant because they are worth a good amount of money and the Smokey Mountain area is historically poor.
