Reynolds 853 vs 4130 Chromoly Steel Stanton Sherpas. Reynolds 853 is a brand of chromoly steel that's designed to be lightweight, and stronger when heated. The UK-made Stanton Sherpa is pricier than the Made-in-Taiwan 4130 Steel frame. Today we explore if its worth the price difference or not, and who each one would be best for. Are you interested in getting a stanton frame at a discount? Become a bike consult patron today to claim your 5% discount. Many thanks to Stanton for sending these in for comparison.

Great review, Steve. I've been eagerly waiting for this one. I purchased the 4130 late last year and even though I really like the bike, I've had moments of Ti remorse as I like a zippy bike. I was hoping this would be the Goldilocks of the three with a good blend of comfort, stiffness and price for me at 195 lbs. Sounds like I should ride the hell out of the one I have and be happy about it. So thanks for saving me some money...but those Ti bars sound sweet!

Absolutely fantastic Steve. As a Sherpa 4130 owner, I always worried I made the wrong choice. At 150 lbs, I really could have gone either way - but I do race XC so the fact that the 4130 is snappier in the pedals make me feel I made the right choice. This video completely demonstrates the power of your vision with this channel. Thank you very much for being awesome!!!

Great review! I was in the process of building up a Sherpa Ti before you reviewed the Ti version and was worried it would be too stiff when I threw a leg over it. Happy to report that compared to the 20 year old bike it replaced, it rides super compliant for me (I wonder how much of it is from my Zipp 3Zero Motos). If anyone's on the fence with any of the Sherpas and you ride long XC stuff, go for it. I'm beyond stoked on this bike!

Dude, I really love your videos and this one is a joy to watch. In my family we ride 90% old school steel and by that I mean 1991-1993 GT all terra (True Temper GTX tubes), Dawes (Reynolds, not sure about the exact specifications) and Rocky Mountain Blizzard (True Temper OX3/OX2) bikes. Our son really got into it once he rode my wife‘s Dawes more often and was flabbergasted by the sweet ride since all he knew before were rock hard aluminium kid’s frames. So keep up the good work and I will keep on saving money for a sweet Stanton or Cotic. All the best from Germany, Oliver

For anyone wondering, you can search Reynolds tubing and see all the difference between 853 and 4130 (or any Reynolds tubing for that matter). There are some minor metallurgical differences but the biggest thing that stands out to me is the heat treat process. In short, Reynolds is essentially name brand 4130 with a specific heat treatment.

So if the 4130 frame is .5lb heavier and the densities are the same (they've got to be really close) then the tubes are either larger in diameter or have more wall thickness (assuming no gussets or other frame differences). Both of those things will increase the moment of inertia for a tube and that will increase the tube's resistance to bending (stiffness). My guess is that the 4130 tubeset has more wall thickness and/or less butting than the 853. There are a thousand other things that can affect the stiffness as well but if the only difference is the tubeset then it has to be thicker walls or larger diameter tubing.
@JD-oe5uc
@JD-oe5uc 2 жыл бұрын
There are some vids on youtube of Dan Stanton explaining this. Indeed the wall thickness is different for some tubes (or it might only be the top tube…I forgot). With the Reynolds they could go a little bit thinner than with the 4130.

@@hannahtaylor8996 I can, but the review won't really help anyone unless they get the exact same bike as I do. Geometry is such an important part to how a bike rides, and if everyone's geo is different, the review doesn't help many people. I'm still willing to review it, but it'll be reviewing a single bike, not everything Curtis makes.

This is soooooooo bike dependent. I've had 853 bikes that were too stiff, and 853 bikes that had that magical steel compliance. I've also had 4130 bikes that were too stiff, and others that were magically springy and compliant as well. Frame design is absolutely an art, sometimes manufacturers nail it, and sometimes they miss. The original Surly Karate Monkey was their trail bike for years, and it was a punishing steel frame. After redesign a few years ago it became a springy and compliant ride. The old design became their Ogre, and it is still harsh. But it is designed to be a touring/bike packing bike, and with a load it smooths out and rides great. Such an art to frame design.

Back in the 90s there was a dramatic difference in weight between straight-guage 4130 cro-mo and high end butted 4130 (i.e. Tange Prestige). I recall there being 1-1.5# in weight savings with the high-end cro-mo. Modern bike frames are bigger and heavier to start, why do you think that 853 is so heavy relative to standard 4130 in this application 🤔
@hardtailparty

Tubing thickness definitely comes into play. 853 is lighter than 4130, but not by a ton.

Have watched his videos on the Sherpa v3 now. He expected the frame weight of the triple butted no name 4130 to be very close to the weight of the 853 frame. Were the asians cheating a bit, putting a straight gauge tube in the mix...? Still interested in the top- and downtube diameters...
