I've owned a Tesla Model 3 for 2 years, so now the Model Y has come to the UK (RHD), is it something that is worth upgrading to? Or, if you have neither, paying the extra to get?

Before anyone points it out, yes Tesla have a parcel shelf in the online shop (although it never seems to be in stock at the moment), it should 100% be on the car as standard is the point I was making.

One thing that "annoys" me about Tesla (in Norway), in relation to Norwegian EV incentives. When you order a car, accessories that shuld be considered "part of the car" is VAT free; if you order aftermarket you have to add VAT. Floor mats (and most interior accessories), 1 set of winter tires, trailer hitch, and permanently mounted accessories, would be "part of the car", and without VAT, if it is part of delivery. If you order it separately you have to pay VAT. It annoys me that Tesla doesn't give the option to order all things that you could get without VAT. Traditional dealer would easily make a sales contract adding custom accessories to the delivery, not ask you to order it separately, forcing you to pay 25% VAT. Roof rack, bike rack, children's seat and other temporarily attached accessories is not considered "part of car" and subject to VAT. Charging station and redundant charging cables isn't considered part of car either, and subject to VAT. Non redundant charging cables is considered "part of the car".

@@thorbjrnhellehaven5766 You get a lot of good stuff under the hood which you don’t see, such as double wishbone suspension, very good handling, octovalve, 12v Li battery, and incredibly efficient drive train, etc etc etc. Interior peripherals pail into insignificance when compared to the serious engineering and tech involved in a Tesla. You do get floor mats now however.;) And everyone’s free to get something else from a dealership?

I'm 6'1" and in my late 50's. Prior to the release of the Y, we rented a 3 for several days. I never liked having to bend down so much to enter the car. And while I found the drivers seat comfortable, the rear seats sat too low to the floor to be comfortable for longer periods of time. We were pleased when we took delivery of our Y that it solved both of these problems. To me, the seating ergonomics are well worth the extra cost.
@carlarrowsmith

Just like you I discounted the 3 due to it being too low and having to bend too much. Was very excited to test drive the Y but was really disappointed by the ride quality, otherwise a great vehicle. Have a reservation on a Toyota BZ4W now, while not as good as the Y in many ways the ride and seats are great. If they ever solve the wheel nut problem I may actually get to own it.

Thanks for another great video. We purchased our Model 3 late last year and pondered long and hard wether to wait another few months for a Y. You summed it up with "the Y is for back seat passengers and enhanced load space". We are retired with no children and no pets, on the occasions that we carry passengers, friends, family, these are short journeys. Apart from the hatchback the Y is a 3 that was attached to a high pressure airline and inflated. We decided to squander the extra cash on holidays and enjoy the extra range. Stay strong, stay safe 🖖

There's only one time I realy had an issue with the "small" hatch on my Model 3. When I bought a multi function duplex color laser printer and scanner. I had to put it inside in a seat, because it was not flat box, but that was difficult too. That particular time it was kind of impulse purchase, late shopping closing soon, and I left my trailer at my cabin. Usually when I want to bring larg stuff, I want to use my trailer anyway. I don't think I'll switch my TM3SR+ for a Model Y any time soon. I don't think I could defend anything close to the added costs, even less if I take the expected payback for extras into the equation. I have FSD and third party upgrade for power boot/froot. I would have to add the value of power froot, or price and time to install.

We've had a M3LR in the UK for 2 years and love it. Supercharger network etc etc means we wouldn't buy anything else but Tesla, at this stage. Just bought a new MYLR as well, from 1st batch into UK. Got what we were hoping for - more leg room & higher seating in the rear and so, more passenger comfort, easier getting in & out of all doors, extra practicality and bigger load volume of the hatchback. We love everything about MYLR except, no load cover (fixable but come on Tesla, such a security failing on a £55k car? Really?) and the killer blow for us, which means it is going back as we can't live with it - the deep bass, pulsating, resonant, harmonic booming throughout the cabin that batters our eardrums, from the tyres crashing over the road surface. The 19inch Hankook tyres may be partly or, mostly to blame. For £55k, we're not changing brand new tyres or worse, fitting replacement suspension, as some Tesla fanboys/girls seem willing to do to their brand new MY's and then, report "some" improvement only. Only got 20 miles into a 400 mile round trip before we got sharp headaches. At 120 miles, the driver had to stop to throw up. Same again on return journey, different driver. Telsa Service Nottingham checked it over and reported, that it is definitely "Harsh to the Ear". However, as it was the same for 3 other brand new MYLR's they test drove, it was declared a "characteristic' of the MYLR and so, the car is "obviously not for us". Never had the problem with our M3LR on decent Michelins. We are great fans of EV's in general and Tesla in particular. So, will be buying a pre-owned Model S or X on air suspension, to go with our M3LR, until our reservation on a Model X Plaid comes good - whenever that might be.

I hear the comment "not good enough for a £55k car" a lot when talking about Teslas. I remind myself a lot of the cost goes into the tech, battery, lifetime software updates, supercharger network, R&D etc that you don't get with other ICE cars and so they can afford to pretty up the cabins, fix the panel gaps, include extras like buttons for wing micros that you use once then ignore (forever!). Tesla needed to not only survive as a manufacture, but unlike other car makers they couldn't rely on ICE to subsidise the new technology.

We’re still running our 2019 Model 3 SR+, and have replaced our camper (no more diesel and expense), and replaced it with a Model Y. We’ll sleep in it on odd nights away, and fill with our old camping gear, and day to day stuff. It’s huge. The M3 & Y are both great cars, benefitting from superb performance and handling, and benefit from superlative software and over-the-air updates. So the 2019 SR+ is as up to the minute as the Y. Having put miles on both cars, the Model 3 is the one to go for if you don’t need the hatchback and ride height. And, obviously, the Model Y if you do. Both are cheap for what the cars deliver, so it’s a case of biting the cash bullet and enjoying the ride.

Touching the veneer with this review. Munro teardown talks through the huge difference between the M3 and Y, single floor castings, 2 piece moulded headliner, heat pump, chassis welding, quality of assembly, etc. No doubt the M3 will follow with the same manufacture. Good and fair review. No car is perfect but by your own assessment, the Y is worth the extra. Once you've enjoyed an SUV, you won't want to step down into a 'car'. Also, it hardly takes up any more room on the drive/garage but the extra conveniences are worth having.

As a Model 3 (Long range) owner myself, looking at the Y in 2023, this has been a perfect review. All the points I already know about my Model 3; the network, efficiency, speed etc are given which is why I still don’t think other EV manufacturers are anywhere near Tesla. I do 30,000 miles a year and Tesla is the only EV that is actually viable in the real world when compared to standard combustion engines. Just… It’s not as easy as a combination engine, you do have to plan to a degree, but the range of the car, and the network (I commute around the country from Birmingham) mean that I can make this car work. Just as I said. Regular ‘people’ who haven’t got the desire to accommodate the compromises that come along with the bonuses an EV offer, would immediately struggle with an EV. My wife would hate the experience for example. She has no interest and barely makes it to a petrol station let alone an EV charger. Tesla is the only car that realistically can bridge that gap for most people. All other manufacturers are making EVs, but aside from town cars, none of the offerings from all the legacy car makers have enough range. And when that range ends and needs charging, the simply do not charge quick enough on infrastructure that is completely inadequate for people to convert. I’d say we are a minimum of a decade off (at the current rate of infrastructure construction) before the Uk is even close. So it’s Tesla still as the only EV to realistically use. And as for the Model Y, after the price reductions Tesla deployed in 2023, the Y is now £2000, not £5000 more expensive. That and this review mean I’ll probably stretch for the Y. Thank you very much for your time taken making the review and you’re informed points without any marketing BS. ANDY.

Maybe we're just weird, but the first thing that happens to the parcel shelf when we get a new car is it gets taken out and shoved in the shed until we sell the car! They just get in the way! For me, getting into a 'normal car' isn't a problem, it's the getting back out! My friend has a Mini and even as a 25 year old I struggle to get back out. My grandfather used to have a Volvo V50 and it was sooo low I hated travelling in it!

@@e-trippingwithadamgebbett8024 Hi Adam, following my wife's very strong recommendation, I opted for the 42 KW/h battery as the useable capacity is actually 37.3 KW/h due to the built-in safety buffer to avoid overcharging. Glad I took her advice as I have averaged 3.8 miles per KW/h over the winter (recently improved by 10%+ in recent warmer weather) which is a theoretical range of about 140-150 miles. What will be the decider is the test drive coming up next weekend, I'll judge based on the feel of the car after driving a while, the handling, ride quality, cabin noise and the general look of the thing. Everyone has their own perspective, but I think the model Y is a far more practical car for the average person. For me the much greater luggage capacity, more comfortable rear seating and higher driving position are all reasons to get the Y. The model 3 is in standard range form for people on a budget, and in performance form for those that want a more sporty car. No doubt the 3 is the better looking, but utility is more important than looks, at least for me. I am sure now out, Tesla will sell far more Y than 3. I have Y on order to replace our 3 in a couple months. Regarding parcel shelf, the more expensive model X also does not have. I would just throw blanket over if leaving valuables in boot.

Good video. Easy choice - if you want a family car it’s model Y - a saloon car isn’t a family car. However both are too expensive IMO - I looked at a model Y as my company car late last year and it’s considerably more (both to buy or lease) than similar size rivals like the ID4, Enyaq, Ionic 5 etc. Ended up ordering an Audi Q4. I just put my order in for my new company car today by coincidence. After having a model 3 for 2.5 years i could have gone for a Y or maybe a PS2 or a EQA, I went for a 3 again ( and BTW it was way more than £15 difference) Happy with M3 even after going for a look at EQA, I4, Kia etc etc and yeah supercharger network has something to do with it but i have only used it 5-6 times in 2.5 years. As a company car model 3 is a no brainer.

Almost exactly the same situation (2 years rather than 2½), same decision. On our scheme the difference on the LR is about £50/month. Boot is surprisingly big on M3 - for the number of times I'd need the extra space, I could hire a van for a lot less money and our local van hire place now does EVs. I much prefer a car to an SUV (less efficient, worse handling) which reduces voice, but there are other good EVs around now. Charging network is the killer feature though - holiday this year is road trip in Scotland. Not remotely worried in Tesla; it'd be stressful in any other EV.

in Belgium the price difference (at this moment, Tesla changes its prices constantly) is just €2000. Something not mentioned here (you did mention the easier entry) is one of the main reasons many people (myself included) go for an SUV: physical limitations and back problems. I now drive a BMW X1 for that reason. That said, against all logic, I am still in doubt whether to go for the 3 or the Y. Although the general look may be the same, the 3 just looks more sporty while the Y looks more like a box with all these large steel surfaces (the simplicity of the design doesn't help). Today I went to the Tesla dealer to try out if the 3 is 'accessible' enough, and yes, with the seat in the highest position I can manage to get out without problems, but shouldn't I consider my backache getting worse in the future? I'm going to test drive it tomorrow, even though in my mind I know I should just opt for the Y.

Remember, current 3 LFP can be charged to 100% daily. Due to 3 being more efficient, daily range of 3 LFP is almost the same as Y LR at 90%. So I was thinking is Y is worth £10k more……. Not currently I test drove 3, Y and then back to my Nissan Leaf 24. I found the Y to toss me around in the carbon more than the other 2, and worse at dealing with pot holes. But I ordered a Y LR in the end. As you said, it’s for rear passenger. This Tesla is to replace family long range diesel Skoda. My wife couldn’t get on with the rear bulkhead beam and much prefer the adjustable rear seat. The hatchback had been invaluable on my Octavia. Hopefully they get 4680 battery in Berlin factory soon. I’ve asked to delay delivery for end of the year. Then I think it a Berlin built 4680 Y LR will be worth £10k more.

Just ordered a Model Y. I do have a dog 😀 In Belgium you can now temporarily buy 2 version of Model Y for cheaper than the cheapest Model 3. We get a 5.000 euro incentive for EVs below 40.000 Euro. Because of that Tesla decreased the price of 2 Model Y versions by a good 5.000 Euro bringing their price to 39.990 euro. With the incentive on top it comes at more or less the same price as for instance the Toyota Corolla Cross gasoline car. Easy choice. And they listened to you and added a parcel shelf 🙂

Test drove one the other day. Agreed that the the massive boot is nice however the model 3 is still decent. I'm not sure I want to pay extra for less range and worse efficiency. Also I wasn't a fan of the smaller mirrors. Before getting my Model 3 I really thought I'd get this, now I'm not so sure. I think I'll be sticking with the Model 3.

I've replaced M3 with MY. The M3 is much tighter to drive (thought it was just me, but plenty on TMC agree). I changed for hatchback and a tow hitch. Elderly relative prefers getting "up" into MY. Rear view mirror in MY is much smaller letterbox, and privacy glass reduces contrast

I test drove both 3 and y back to back. Yes the y is easier to get into but I didn’t find the 3 hard to get into. I just found the 3 a more enjoyable drive and given that we already have a 7 seater just have no need for a 2nd suv.

Seems that the LR versions are now the same price for the 3 & Y. Obviously you can pay £10k less and go the standard for the 3. The Performance Y is still £5k more than the 3 Perf. As i'm only really in the market for the LR versions, I think that the Y would be the one for me. Will see how I feel after the test drive.

The UK Tesla web site (19 Mar 22) currently lists the Tesla Model 3 Long Range and Tesla Model Y Long Range as the same price, with much longer lead times for the Model 3 with standard wheels! Just over a week ago, the Model 3 was cheaper. I suspect a Model Y price increase will be in the pipeline to match the Model 3 increase, unless the latest Model 3s will be delivered with a spec for spec match with the Model Y, other than the different form factor? Tesla US website still lists the Model 3 Long Range as cheaper than its Model Y. I wonder why the UK loses out?

The MY is the better “all round” car as it can and will do everything-practicality wise and tows more. The M3 is still excellent though and the better drivers car. The SC network will not be such a plus point going forward either. Not only because Elon WILL open up the SC network for all EVS but also because the public infrastructure is improving daily. Won’t be much of a difference in 2 years. The SC network tends to be busy or full many times already, unless late evenings or early mornings. As so many Teslas have been sold!

Don’t know why but that small height difference makes it looks much larger. The Y is certainly more practical as a dog owner. (That’s why I got an estate.) but if I had no dog I would go saloon. Like the reg number on the Y are you trying to say something ?? At £55k it’s beyond my pocket but I suppose it’s all about the charging network

Took delivery of my Model Y here in the UK on Thursday 17th March - the car is awesome! Check out my youtube videos of the thousands of Teslas at the port of Southampton where I collected the car on Thursday. The lack of parcel shelf is NOT an issue. The back window is heavily tinted and it is very hard to see anything in the boot. The higher riding position is a really nice feature - being able to see what is going on in front is an extra safety bonus. The performance is mental - much faster than my 53 plate Focus RS I used to own.

um... one thing you missed... the air filter in the Y is much more capable than in the 3. They don´t have the room in the 3. if you are asthmatic, or stuck in traffic, it will give people some improvement of quality of life... also although obvious... the frunk is bigger... also the rear seat passengers, if they are bigger, will be much happier in the Y.

At 11:03, you state that the BMW i4 is "about the same price" as the Tesla Model 3. As of a few weeks ago, that was only true when comparing the i4 M50 (without any options) and the Model 3 Performance. To compare the M3 and i4 eDrive40, you should be comparing against the 'Standard' M3 (now £46k), which is also single motor, 2WD, similar performance, etc. A 'poverty spec' i4 *starts* at £51.9k and will inevitably cost closer to £60k by the time even modest upgrades are added to bring the spec close to a Standard M3. So, yes, it's probably the 'better' car, but it's also (significantly?) more expensive than a Standard M3.
