Last week I had the honor of meeting with a team of Montessori teachers from the Ukraine Montessori Community (montessoriua.com/). We spoke about the challenges they are facing and questions they have including:
- How to help children who are constantly talking about the death and violence that they have witnessed with other children who haven't seen it
- How do you honor the child's sense of order in the midst of war?
- How do you help a child who is shut down/quiet since the war?
- How do you help a child learn to control his impulses/regulate his emotions?
- How do you help children who are stealing snacks?
The key in all of this is to help each other find ways to help. We humans are driven to try and make sense of things. It is that act of meaning-making that actually strengthens our salience network and can help protect us against mental illness. It is a resiliency factor.
Watch the whole video to learn more and reach out to the Ukraine Montessori Community, some of the most resilient people I've ever met, to see how you can support their work.
We hope this helps!
