Corus International is dedicated to improving food security and rebuilding resilient livelihoods in Kharkiv, Ukraine, with support from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). These agricultural recovery initiatives are part of Corus' comprehensive response in Ukraine, which integrates expertise from Lutheran World Relief, IMA World Health, and CGA Technologies. This multifaceted effort includes providing emergency shelter, essential healthcare, psychosocial support, material resource distribution, protection and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention services, as well as technical assistance for cash transfer programs.
With a focus on both short- and long-term recovery, livelihood recovery efforts target smallholder farmers, including returnees, residents of Kharkiv, and displaced families now residing in the area. The support includes essential agricultural inputs like seeds, tools, and livestock, as well as training in small-scale, climate-sensitive farming practices. Programming also assesses the safety and accessibility of farming fields affected by unexploded ordnance and mine contamination. By prioritizing local capacity strengthening and collaborating with local partners and networks, agricultural advisory services are enhancing food security and enabling farmers to generate income through the sale of their produce.
By addressing both agricultural and humanitarian needs, such work serves as a model for effective lifesaving and recovery efforts, contributing to the restoration of sustainable livelihoods in Ukraine.
