Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the Russian space communications center in Crimea , and this is not the first attempt by Ukraine to destroy this facility. Forbes analyzed why it is so important.
According to the publication, the NIP-16 facility was built in Yevpatoria as part of the Soviet space program. It was designed to communicate with lunar and Martian probes in the 1960s and 70s, but can also communicate with modern Lotos-S spy satellites and GLONASS navigation satellites, which are the equivalent of American GPS satellites.
That is why Ukraine is trying to destroy this facility, Forbes writes, noting that “twice since December, Ukrainian troops have fired missiles at the priceless space base.”
This site is undoubtedly scientifically important, and the impact of damage to its sophisticated scientific instruments cannot be overstated. However, Forbes notes, NIP-16 is also a legitimate military target, since its transmitters can send signals to and receive signals from surveillance, communications and navigation satellites, including the Liana and GLONASS spacecraft.
"GLONASS satellites help guide the most powerful Russian aircraft munitions - KAB glide path bombs. The Lotos-S satellites, which are part of the Liana reconnaissance system, detect electromagnetic emissions from military targets, such as sea vessels, and determine their location. Possibly the satellites “Liana” listened to signals from Ukrainian unmanned boats with explosives, which are displacing the Russian fleet from the western part of the Black Sea,” the publication writes. At the same time, Forbes notes that NIP-16 is a difficult target.
"Its radio dishes, generators and controls are scattered across two large campuses. The most visible equipment - old dishes - is of rugged construction. According to Russian space historian Anatoly Zak, the builders of NIP-16 assembled equipment from old railway bridges, the hulls of decommissioned submarines and a rotating mechanism from a decommissioned battleship,” the article says.
Thus, Ukraine may need many more strikes to seriously damage the facility, let alone destroy the base. In addition, Forbes adds, the destruction of NIP-16 will not eliminate Russia's ability to communicate with its satellites, but will only limit it, since the Russians have other space bases, and at the same time, none of them are so close to the front line in Ukraine.
