Picatinny is now producing 24,000 155mm rounds a month. That's less than Ukraine is currently using in a day & but more than the UK was producing in a year... If nothing else, this war has been a massive wake up call to any nation who values its freedom & security regarding defence costs & needs.

No amount of ramping up of munitions production by NATO countries will alter the outcome of this war though. Ukraine will no longer have sufficient numbers of troops to make use of an increased capacity for artillery attacks by the time the extra shells arrive. This will not be a problem for the arms manufacturers of course.

@@tubthump Fact free drivel from someone with zero idea of the facts. Unlike Russia & its fascist dictatorship, Ukraine is united behind the fight to survive as a free, independent & democratic nation. They KNOW exactly what kind of future there would be under Putin's hegemony & utterly reject it. I rejoice in the ability of free world arms manufacturers to step up to the plate & deliver - it's a price worth paying to oppose the kind of repressive, authoritarian dictatorship offered by Putin's kleptocracy.

The Leopard 1s were not some unwanted rotten stuff someone found in a depot. Since spring several european states made a collective effort to buy and refit hundreds of them and the first were send to Ukraine in July. The problem with the particular batch was, that Ukrainians have trained on them in Germany for months, so they were already worn-out and in need of repair. Thus, Ukraine refused them because they cannot waste their resouces to repair stuff which is already broken by the time of delivery. In short: the Leo1 is old but ok. The embarrassing story is, that no one bothered to repair them before they were send from the training ground to Ukraine.

Posting for the algorithm, and also to say huge thanks for this intelligent and balanced update each day. My family have been hosting Ukrianian refugees since 5th May 2022, and we are on our 4th family/11th & 12th Ukrainian that we have helped to get out of the war zone. This podcast has been an essential for my wife, daughters, and I (and many other fellow HFU hosts in our area) keeping well informed about the situation - which in turn has helped us understand what it is our UKR guests have been going through, their challenges at home, their cultural challenges in assimilating here and the situation on the ground in Ukriane each time we have coordinated getting our latest refugees out of danger. Also, as with the ups and downs of war, this pod has helped us keep all our spirits up, and helps us explain the situation to the many Ukrainians that now live in the locality. I teach a Ukrainian student who is a refugee (we live in the South of England). Over the summer break she went home to Ukraine, Kiev, to see her mum, dad and baby brother. She told me that one night she had to run to the shelter nine times. That's just insane. No sleep. Anyone who's ever had an infant baby would understand how terrible it is to be sleep deprived. Just imagine, this is happening to the entire population of Ukraine every night (they don't know where the Russian missiles will land, so the sirens blast over the entire country). The only way to survive would be to sleep in the shelter. With families, babies, pets etc. Those poor people. They are so strong. There's so much more than just the front line. Keep strong Ukraine. ❤

@jansix4287 What annoy me is when they use factionally incorrect information to diminish the effort by most EU countries. For example, recently, Hamish said that if just all nato countries would give as much support as the US the situation would be different. Of the 28 NATO countries whose support is tracked by ifw Kiel the UK and US ranks 24th and 25th respectively. So the actual situation is exactly the opposite: If just the US and the UK would do as much as the European countries, the situation would be very different.

@@AK-ej5ml The US military aid to Ukraine is important, albeit 5% of a 12% defence budget is a mere 0.07% of each tax dollar, (assuming someone is actually paying their taxes and not just raising the debt ceiling.) But the US provides some crucial technologies, which can’t be bought anywhere else. The ability to hit an ammunition depot far behind enemy lines with HIMARS is invaluable. Nonetheless some of them think, the war is immediately lost without their support. This twisted world view will only hurt themselves. Look what Brexit did to the British economy! A false sense of self-importance is going to lead to grave mistakes. Don’t be annoyed by them, pity them for the fools they are. 😆

So much BS on Leo's. Here is what really happened: Leo1 crew training in GER started before mechanics training. Happens in batches of 10 (1 company ) Takes 6 weeks. 2 weeks on training tanks. 4 weeks on the tanks the Ukrainians will take with them to Ukr, as they get refurbished by FFG. Ukr insisted on sending the first 2 companies directly to Ukr after those 4 weeks of hard training, before Ukr mechanics were trained to fix them. 20 were sent as desired, then, surprise surprise, the Ukrainians found out that 50yo tanks do need some work after 4 weeks of intensive use, even though they were refurbished before the training. Turns out, Ukr mechanics aren't magicians that can repair tanks without training nor the right equipment. So now Ukr Leo1 crews will continue training in GER or POL instead, while their mechanics get up to speed. And no, GER doesn't have loads of leo2 available. Just as Uk can't just send a bunch of Challengers. Leo1s are generally easier to maintain, once mechanics are trained. They also can use Ukr bridges. Ukr will get 135+ of them. But it looks like another 24 Leo2 are in the cards for a ringswap as SWI is now finally ready to officially retire them.

There was literally 0 research done for the tank topic. The tanks were restored but subsequently worn down by the training of the ukrainian crews. The training of the ukrainian maintainers is just starting, so Ukraine had no means to restore them. Hence it makes sense to restore them in Poland or Germany after the training for the time being. It's embarrassing that the wear and tear of the training was not planned for and the training of the maintainers is not in sync with the crews, but the tanks will still be accepted into service. Was that so difficult to research? To conclude with "oh just send them your active service tanks" is even more daft for a former military servicemember to say.

The Germans usually make a check-up on all tanks after 4-6 weeks of tank training with Ukrainians, before they ship them. But the Ukrainians insisted to have 20 tanks delivered directly after training, fresh troops and 'tired' tanks together. So were they perfect after 4-6 weeks of use? No. But the Ukrainians asked for the 'tired' tanks themselves. So, don't blame the Germans that weren't allowed to fix them up. Read in Der Spiegel article. Germany has not loads of Leo2, as GB has not loads of Challanger 2. There are many in many other countries, but each country has not "enough". It has less tanks than Poland, after Poland gave their old T72 and part of modernized T72 Twardy?. Enough tanks are only in USA on stock, and see how long it takes them to be ready.... These Leo1 are crap from Belgia, Italy (probably swiss providence). But the available Leo2 that Swiss had stored and sold to Rheinmetall are not allowed to be sold to Ukraine...so they go to Greece that is unloading its crappy Leo1 to Ukraine. Leo1 for Ukraine are not only refurbished, but they have thermals installed...Denmark and Germany train already tankers for these tanks. They could use them for Belarus border, till they can handle them, and they are debugged. Problems that occurred in Ukraine were minor and were very fast solved. They just need to learn this new system. Lets not forget, that there might still some bigger ammunition stocks left for them. Use and discard. Many M113 are not younger

They only rejected one batch of tanks that wasn't battle ready because they don't have the resources to repair them in Ukraine. As for the grain: my guess is Ukraine is really desperate. All their ports are targeted, there's almost no ships getting through. But they NEED to export this grain, it's the main income of their country. And they're an EU candidate country now, which should them allow access to the common market. So, of course they are pissed that despite them being a candidate country and everyone saying how much they stand with Ukraine, suddenly they're again some sort of second class people who can't export their grain? Especially in their time of need? Because some Polish politicians want some sort of easy talking point before the elections? IMO, the EU should put air defense on the border of Romania that "accidentally" protects the Ukrainian ports across the river as well. And put some money into improving Polish port and rail infrastructure so part of these exports can go through Polish ports. And probably the EU could help with paying for grain transport costs so the stuff gets through. Because worldwide turmoil because of a food price crisis would cost a lot more. I'd totally approve my tax Euros going towards such projects.

@@raymondparnell439 Russia mobilised hundreds of thousands of reservists - former professional soldiers - in exactly the same way USA does at times of war. These are in addition to the standing army and in addition to those recruited for mandatory service (conscripts). Then there are the volunteers. Troops are rotated in and out of combat - throwing poorly trained conscripts into battle alongside well trained, experienced and well rested soldiers, when there are plenty of non-combat roles for them anyway, is plainly a terrible idea.

@@tubthump Yes, they do, and have done so since the very first day of the war. The Russian BTGs were designed around conscripts filling out the ranks. The Kharkov offensive saw conscript units dumped in the front line to cover the withdrawal of the more capable units. Conscripts bolstered the ranks in the south when the frontline grew too thin.

Should swap tanks around between Germany, Poland, and Ukraine. Give the newest and best models to Ukraine, the next best models to Poland, and leave Germany with the rest for active use and conversion to other models. This would provide primarily Leo 2A7 / 2A7+ to Ukraine, mostly Leo 2A6 to Poland, Leo 2A5 for interim use by Germany while they build Leo 2A8, and many Leo 2A4 that could be converted into self propelled anti air guns(SPAAG) with either German Gepard or Finnish Marksman style turrets. Send these SPAAG to Ukraine for defending units against drones, helicopters, and some missiles.

I generally agree with Hamish but not knowing all the complexities written into the UN charter, it would appear to me that majority voting must be paramount over the veto. In addition, any one member must abstain from voting on any matter should they be identified as the aggressor in any dispute identified by the membership, using that majority voting system. I would also go one stage further and suggest that the only members allowed to vote are those who contribute to an agreed level of contributions allied to GDP so that the UN can function, as intended, for the benefit of its members should the need arise.

The reason there is a veto to begin with is that neither USA nor USSR would accept a system that could work against them, so to have them being part of it at all, the permanent members were given veto-rights. The alternative would be a UN without the nuclear powers of the day, which frankly would be even more powerless than today.

Because the Ukrainians have a special status here. The motto here is: don't say anything negative about Ukraine. Isn't that true? That's very true. Many Germans here are angry about this. The company has plants in China as well. Now that particularly hurts a bit because we make component for some weapons being used by Ukraine as well. (We are supposed to be flooded with money for new machines for the "Ukraine Initiative") Id be very very interested into a DEEP DIVE into what companys are selling ball-bearings to Russia. Is it company selling is it coaxed by Chinese governments. (I remember a recent episode talking about how the economy companys in China are supporting) That worries me if the company is proffiting from both sides.
