UKRAINE are using WW2-style planes to hunt down Russian drones on the battlefield in a blow to Vladimir Putin's increasingly desperate war effort.
Air Marshal Greg Bagwell, a retired RAF commander, told The Sun Ukraine has taken inspiration from Britain's famous Spitfires and are making headway in the skies against Vlad's meatgrinder troops.

This was a problem that troubled the WW2 German rocket airplanes. They traveled so fast that they passed through the Allied bomber formations before they could get more than a few shots. Those rocket planes were over 100 MPH faster than the bombers, and their cannon firing rate was too slow for that speed. When your target speed is not much more than your stalling speed, you definitely have a mismatch problem.

@@mrbaab5932 Easy. the attacker is still faster than the target drone, just not too much faster or else able to slow down enough to provide more aiming time to focus the bullet stream.

You take me back to my childhood in the war, I remember seeing a Spitfire go low over me and I could wave to the pilot and he waved back. Mind you, I was terrified because I thought it was a German. I remember running with my Dolly pram. I quite often saw doodlebugs particularly the first ones before they put a what was basically a jet engine on the back. We used to crouch down by a wall until you heard the bang of it exploding and then you knew that for moment you were safe to continue. My childhood experiences are why I feel so sad for the Ukrainians, I know what they’re going through.

A little unfair. We keep hearing that the Hurri was not fast enough, but it was a very stable gun platform and 300+mph. The Hurri was almost obsolete by 1939 and by the time of the V1 being used for ground attack, the Hurri-bomber role (Hurricane IV). Such as V1 launch sites in France, but these were defended by flak and bombed up the Hurri could barely manage 200mph and would get mauled. But they still went.

The Ukrainians have lost fighter jets shooting down drones, partially due to the performance mismatch. The stall speed of a Mig 29 is faster than a drone can fly. That can make intercepting the drone hard. The Yak 52 is much closer in performance envelope. They need to figure out an add on sensor system to help find the drones though. Something like a FLIR camera or that small radar system the USA is adding to our SHORAD-M striker variants.

There are 3 types of drones. _THREE TYPES._ There are unarmed recon drones, armed recon drones, and armed attack drones. This is so important because a recon drone can have limited attack ability. This means that 2/3rds of military spec drones can kill you. This is why the Ukraine front line is currently almost WW1 era and why old WW2 planes need to hunt down drones in the first place. This is why Ukraine is trying to find low cost kinetic anti-aircraft weapons that use machine guns to defeat cheap DJI systems instead of million dollar missiles.

There is a branch from Grob Aircraft France which is already well on its way to build and sell super light aircrafts like these but in a modern version. With Ukraine in mind they need to multiply ways to deliver damage to the ennemy and this is an anwser, easy to maintain, cheap, easy to learn, polyvalent, modular equipment incuding long range missiles and they'd be used to support pilot training schools to absorb theiur cost. Imaging a country like India or Brasil need to train a "few" pilots, I think they hit gold and they for sure will be usefull to the Ukrainians even if they do not go to the frontline they can be use for drone hunting, surveillance and else.

Comparing the Yak-52 to a Spitfire is like comparing a VW Beetle to a Maserati. The Spit exceeded 400 mph, fast enough to catch up with a V1 Buzz Bomb and flip it with its metal constructed wing. The Hurricane, older and slower, with a mostly fabric covered wing and fuselage, couldn't go fast enough for that trick and the wing definitely wasn't strong enough to flip a V1's wing.

The aircraft has fuel and oil systems permitting inverted flight for as long as two minutes. The engine drives a two-bladed counter-clockwise rotating, variable pitch, wood and fiberglass laminate propeller. At 998 kg (2,200 lb) empty weight, the Yak-52 is responsive and very capable as an aerobatic aircraft. 🇺🇦😎👍🏼

You provided a good summary of the evolution of flight in WWI. In the case of drones in Ukr keep suggesting adding a rope/wire "tail", approximately like a kite tail. Then the "attacking" drones flies above and in front of the target, letting the tail tangle in the props. An/or add hooks to "trip"/unbalance the enemy drone.

Anti Aircraft was famously moved for cities to the coast to combat V1s. The then recently US produced proximity fuse helped. The allied aircraft would then fly in zones beyond the Anti Aircraft fence. "Kent became known as "Bomb Alley"". This was known as layered defence. Of course ground attack & spotters for launch sites were also utilized.

The YAK isn't a spitfire style aircraft. It's not as fast. It doesn't have guns and it's over 30 years younger. The spitfire was a high performance interceptor. The YAK is a popular trainer. This is very cool of the UAF!!!!!! Chinese version of the YAK-52, the CJ-6 was armed with two 7.62 machine guns. Now, that was probably only effective for primary and initial cadet "Introduction to Aerial Weapons" training to demonstrate the concept of "Aiming Lead" and to show Cadets. In practice, without a full stabilised targeting computer with a HUD display. It is actually very difficult to hit another aerial target!

It makes absolute sense to use Yak 52 or similar aircraft to intercept drones in areas far from the front. And mind you, those trainers are brilliant for the task, because of their performance envelope. They are not slow, but they CAN fly slowly. And let's be real, there is no necessity for dogfight capabilities, as drones won't do any fancy manoeuvring, nor will they be able to shoot back. (adding such capabilities would make the drones much more expensive and heavy) Also, trainers are rather forgiving, meaning you don't need flight aces to operate them and most pilots are already familiar with its performance and operating procedures. This may also be something that the NATO partners should look into... It wouldn't be so difficult (and rather costeffective) to refit Cessna 172 or Beech Bonanza or Baron with light machine guns or even .50 Cals. A step up from piston-engines would be turboprop trainers like the Orlik or PC-9. Or counter-insurgency aircraft like Embraer's Tucano. This way Ukraine could more cost effectively maintain a wider and tighter defensive rings around critical infrastructure.
