Ukulele Tutorial - Strumming Down And Up

To learn how to play faster and more complicated rhythms with the ukulele, this video tutorial for beginners walks you through down strums followed by up strums. You’ll be learning how to use fingernails for down strum and fingertips for up strums.
It is possible to use both multiple fingers or only the index finger. Follow carefully the instructions in the video tutorial to make the movement smooth and make sure your wrist and strumming hand don’t get too sore.

For anyone reading this, this video really only covers how to strum up and down with that specific strumming technique. Meaning, that other people, including myself may use their thumb to strum or a pick. Whichever way you strum, is perfectly fine! If You use your thumb, I recommend using the side of it to go down and more of your nail bed to go up. I myself, am not a “master ukulele player”, but I thought this comment may be useful for anyone who reads it. Also, no shade towards the guy who made this video, the videos this channel produces are really helpful! I just wanted to add a comment for anyone who is struggling, and they can’t seem to get that strumming technique down, or don’t feel comfortable using it. :)

@@isha9679 I use thumb to strum upwards and index for downwards. Works but the speed isn't any good.

so, to sum up the video - have a relaxed hand. don't tense it, and don't press too hard when you're strumming, if you do, your fingers will get stuck -when strumming down use your nails, and when strumming up, use the pads of your fingers -use brushing motions when strumming

Relaxed wrist is the most important. I always remember that after my fingers get stuck going up. Thanks for the reminder.

When I strum up it doesn't sound strong at all as when im strumming down and my fingers keep getting stuck, does anyone have any tips please?

Just realised while watching this one and practicing that using your fingers to strum down and your thumb nail to strum up is one of the best methods. Tried it and i'm now good. Note- I've small finger nails so strum up feels way easier and better with the thumb nail.

My skin right before my nails is getting caught by the strings... It starts to bleed, and its maybe that i need longer nails and a relaxed hand. but using a plectrum is terrible idea as ukes are meant for your hand and you have more control and stuff you can do if you use your hand... Ill comeback when i have longer nails!!

Ahh, thank you, the book I'm learning from just told me to use my thumb to strum down and my fingers to strum up, it said nothing about nails. I'm getting a much smoother strum and a better sound this way! I will say that I'm finding it much easier to use my nails on the up strum as well, my fingers seem to get caught in the strings a bit and not make as good a sound when I use the pads.

If you play with your left hand strumming, they usually keep those fingers long, and your right hand finger nails clipped

@@smallgalaxy7509 yes I've kind of made some progress, I mean, I either use my thumbs or the index finger while strumming up.Strumming up using index finger sounds good to me.Also I've dropped down the idea of learning to play ukulele recently lol. 🙃.
