When Josh says "it'll take a long time" to get rid of the flying fingers, take it to heart. I've been playing for years, but never really focused on economy of motion until recently. I've been focused on proper technique for about four months and I've improved but still am not to where I want to be. Don't get discouraged if you're not keeping your fingers down after only a couple weeks of practice!
@kevinmichael9482

Assumed fast bass lines came down to fast fingers (certainly helps!). After a few years playing, discovered there's more than meets the eye; efficiency of motion matters, i.e., when a guitarist's/bassist's fingers appear to be moving 'slow' relative to fast, clear notes heard, they're elite.

I have to admit, when I first started going through this video my first instinct was to blow through the exercise, but it's more challenging than I anticipated; especially trying to play it clean and clear. And I've been playing for over 30 years! Thanks for keeping the old dog in line!

I had this bookmarked for later reference and just got around to it today. True, it is a little tricky to play clean. On first few passes I kept stylishly sliding in to the 6th fret instead of just playing it plain as intended. It was actually hard to stop myself from doing that.

This guy is great. I’m halfway through his (paid) lessons and in less than 2 weeks I can play along with my (hugely more experienced) mates in their band. This is no paid promo (I don’t even know the dude…I live in Australia!) but I guarantee you, if you want to learn the bass, pay him his money…it’s not much…and have him teach you.

If you can play bass with people instead of sitting in a room on your own, you might find the inspiration and excitement of playing along with others keeps you going. Especially if you can gig. That’s how it’s gone for me. I have been lucky to play with some amazing musicians.i am completely rubbish at bass the weakest link in the band. But I practice my ass off to try and not let down the people I am in a band with. He is right! Only find inspiration from others. So what your not as good as others. They are doing their thing. You are doing yours. Least your playing .Things of great value are seldom achieved instantly . If music was easy it would be boring

A quick tip from a hobbit for all the other hobbit bassists out there: If you are just starting out with this exercise and you are really struggling spreading your hobbit sized fingers across 4 frets, you can move the exercise a dot or two higher up the neck 😁
@martinmix7464
@martinmix7464 10 ай бұрын
And micro-shifting isn't against any rules. I've got small hands and can stretch enough to fret a note on the 4th fret while keeping my index finger down but it's prone to a lot of buzzing because I'm short of the actual fret. Shifting a bit or even rocking my hand down does wonders and after it became natural, my playing became a lot better. Glad to see other Hobbits here!

I've been learning for a few months now and I absolutely love playing the bass... this video has helped alot of my problems and my progress.. my only difference is I'm missing almost half of my middle finger on my fret hand and my nub doesn't reach well so I get a little flying sometimes and have had to make some things work that aren't optimal... but thank you for making these videos!! This exercise is truly useful. I've been having problems with clear execution of couple of basslines recently, got fed up and put them on the back burner. Around the same time I started doing this drill and yesterday I came back to my nemesis basslines. Guess what? They sound much better now and I feel more control in both fretting and plucking hand. Amazing stuff Josh, I love your channel.

I’ve been doing this practice every day for three months, never picked up a guitar before then- and it’s considerably improved my playing. The overall sound quality has changed form sounding incomplete with that metal scraping sound to a much cleaner bass tone. My finger dexterity has improved a lot too, and it’s much easier to go back and forth between my index and middle finger ‘plucking’ than just using my index for everything. At this point I’d say the most ‘complex’ baseline I can play is Burnin Love by Elvis, and I’m very proud of myself to see such progress. Thank you very much for this video!
