Ulanzi TC001 is back with Home Assistant HACS component

Ulanzi has been on the market for some time now and also a lot of Home Assistant users are using them. Today we will look at how to flash it, add to Home Assistant, use classical mqtt.publish service but also NEW HACS component that will make your life easier.

In my opinion "Ulanzi TC001" isnt the right word for the title, because AWTRIX has the Integration, not Ulanzi.🙂 AWTRIX its not limited to the Ulanzi device alone and has no affiliation with this company. Anyways, great Video! Greetings, the AWTRIX developer.

Thanks for this awesome firmware! It actually made my life much easier. One of the clocks tells my parents when the laundry can be washed and when it should not, because solar power is free and grid is expensive. And the other ones is in some distance to my bed, turns off at night, lights up with the sunset and presents me a short overview of my smart home.

Thank you for explaining the advanced options and showing where you got the information. A lot of channels just throw some YAML at you and are done. But I feel like I learn something by watching your videos.

Great video. I made 2 of these with my son as a project by buying the matrix, esp32, and diffuser from Aliexpess which we mounted in deep picture frames. We flashed the Awtrix software as you showed but I was not aware of the new HACS integration so will definitely look into that. Thanks!

Nice, great video! Totally missed that there was an integration. 👍🏻 I've been using two clocks, since they received AWTRIX support, with automations. They work really great. My general use case is to show upcoming weather and all kinds of notifications (like when the washing machine is done etc.).

Thanks for sharing - AWTRIX really makes a big difference if you want to automate things. And integration is relatively new thing (6 months old or something like that).

Great video and great device! I'm thinking about to order two of this devices. In advance one question about the MQTT-connection/communication with HA: Is there any yaml-configuration needed in HA or on device-site, or will the device automatically appear in HA?

Hvala Vam na odovm odličnom uputstvu! Kratko i jasno! Bravo! Jedno pitanje, ne toliko vezano za uputstvo, ali svakako za Ulanzi TC001. Kako prikazati na displeju Ulanzi slovne znakove koji sadrže kvačice, kao što su "ć", "š", "ž".....

I have been using blueprints for almost a year now and have been quite happy. The only drawback is that I am gone for about 3 months during the year and would like to receive notifications at my other location. Setting up MQTT over the internet with my service provider is pretty much impossible. I'm curious as to how this new integration communicates with the Ulanzi display. Will it work over an internet connection?

No, this is still using same communication channel - MQTT. In theory, you could do it via Internet, but I really would not recommend it. In order for that to work, you would need to expose MQTT to outside, and that's really bad idea. Or potentially, you could use external (cloud) MQTT service, but again, maybe not that good idea.

I really like the clock - but it crashes regularly with me. Definitely sometimes because of a poorly structured message, but I still have a lingering crash every now and again - just not worked out why. I have got the MQTT system working - so won't be moving to the integration - but I can see that it would be helpful for new users

I have plugged it into power but it goes to sleep or powers off after a while. How to keep it on all the time?

Does the display go to sleep or device. And can you wake it up with on buttons?

Great video. But how does one automate brightness? These are very bright at night.

You could try playing with mood lighting: blueforcer.github.io/awtrix3/#/api?id=mood-lighting or blueforcer.github.io/awtrix3/#/api?id=change-settings has setting BRI used to set brightness.

Use the BRI setting - it works well - just send it at the correct time of day or night to adjust as needed (200 is enough for day time and I set 7 at night) - I also tie it to a motion sensor so it switches off until someone walks by it.

It has a light sensor on top of the clock. Use the auto bright feature in the settings.

Auto brightness works OK, but with BRI you can have better control.
